6 ABOUT AUGUSTA SYMPHONY

Now in its 66th season, Augusta Symphony is the primary professional orchestra for the Central Savannah River Area and pursues its mission, “to share the joy of great musical performance with our community—together we are music,” through annual symphonic, Pops, and family concerts that reach approximately 20,000 people each year. Via Community Chords Education, Veterans Outreach, and Music Therapy programs, Augusta Symphony further strives to foster broad About Augusta Symphony accessibility to live classical music performance and a lifelong appreciation of the art form among people of all ages, backgrounds, and means. Community Chords currently serves thousands of youth and adults in communities within a 75-mile radius of Augusta. Founded in 1954 under the baton of Music Director Harry M. Jacobs, Augusta Symphony has evolved from a small group of 15 musicians to an 85-member professional ensemble and leading regional orchestra. Augusta Symphony has been led by four talented conductors: Harry Jacobs until 1991, Donald Portnoy from 1991-2009, Shizuo Z Kuwahara from 2009-2016, and Maestro Dirk Meyer, who is in his fourth season as Music Director. During its sixty-six years of growth, Augusta Symphony has matured in artistic excellence while increasing programming and outreach to engage audiences of all ages and levels of music knowledge. This progress is made possible through the support of three dedicated groups of volunteers: Augusta Symphony Guild, Augusta Symphony League, and Friends of Augusta Symphony, along with the support of all of our donors and patrons. The Miller Theater is the home of all Symphony Series and Pops! performances and features a variety of programming throughout the year. It was built in downtown Augusta in 1940 as an Art Moderne movie theater and vaudeville house and operated until 1984. In 2008, Peter S. Knox IV donated the Miller Theater to Augusta Symphony to be revitalized as a performance venue. The restoration was the result of a $23 million capital campaign, made possible by the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, SPLOST funding, and state and federal historic tax incentives. Construction took place in 2016-2017, and the Miller Theater reopened with a grand Opening Night Gala on January 6, 2018.

The Augusta Symphony is a member of the League of American Orchestras, Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce, Greater Augusta Arts Council, North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, and Columbia County Chamber of Commerce.

8 COMMUNITY CHORDS EDUCATION Community Chords School Outreach brings performances and demonstrations by Symphony musicians and guest artists directly into CSRA schools. Symphony musicians perform engaging and interactive concerts for students and teachers. This season, many of these mini-concerts will be pre-recorded and provided to school groups as video links to share with students on their own schedules. The Discovery Concert annually provides over 1,200 elementary, middle, and high school students, including homeschoolers, with opportunities to experience a free live symphonic performance. Due to the pandemic challenges, this season’s Discovery Concert will be provided to area schools and homeschool groups as a video link to the recording of the “America” Symphony Series concert, which features multimedia images above the orchestra that students are sure to enjoy from the safety of their classroom or home. Community Chords The 2021 Youth Concerto Competition will be presented jointly by the Augusta Symphony and ’s Department of Music on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theater from 1 – 4 pm. The competition is open to students ages 10-18 residing in or South Carolina who are students of orchestral instruments including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and piano. The overall winner will earn the opportunity to perform with the Augusta Symphony in a concert under the direction of Maestro Dirk Meyer.

VETERANS OUTREACH Through a partnership with the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center Music Therapy program, Symphony musicians perform at the VA hospitals, a Veteran Guitar Ensemble attends Symphony rehearsals, and symphony musicians play during Music-Assisted Group Meditation and Relaxation Therapy. This program’s purpose is to assist veterans with pain, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Symphony musicians benefit as well by building bridges with the community in which they perform and experience the positive impact their craft has on the veterans and hospital staff. MUSIC THERAPY Thanks to a generous sponsorship from University Health Care System, the Symphony is entering its second year of providing free group music therapy to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Board-certified, licensed music therapist Veronica Andreassen- Barker shares her talent and compassion with participants in the Knox Music Institute as well as through telehealth sessions launched during the pandemic. This year, Ms. Barker will introduce a mindfulness-based music therapy initiative in the KMI, funded by a grant from the American Orchestra’s Futures Fund, a program of the League of American Orchestras made possible by the generous support of the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation. Symphony musicians and university students will provide live music for group therapy sessions, facilitated by the music therapist, that focus on guided relaxation, imagery, and mindfulness practices to positively impact the lives of participants such as those suffering chronic illnesses as well as community members interested in self-care and wellness.

12 LEVI W. HILL IV PRESIDENT Dear Symphony Friends, Thank you for your continued support of Augusta Symphony, and welcome to our 66th season. The British figure William Morris once said of poetry, “... it is the companion in youth of desire and love; it is the power which in later years dispels the ills of life.” The same can be said of music. At times, it energizes the spirit and motivates, but then too, it has the power to calm the restlessness of uncertainty. I believe music to be one of life’s essentials. With the power to span generations it speaks to the youthful minds of tomorrow while restoring in others the joys of yesterday. A wonderful and mysterious feature of music is that when listening, each of us will claim a unique experience but that we will also share in Board President a common apprehension of its beauty. I believe this is the pleasure that has us longing to be together. Together we are music. Levi W. Hill IV President, Board of Directors

POPS 2020 - 2021 13 14 ANNE CATHERINE MURRAY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As you can imagine, it takes months of planning and teamwork to produce our Season Program Books. In the past year, we have all learned the hard way that the best laid plans often go awry. And so I struggle as I write this letter in late July of 2020, acutely aware that by the time you read this, our plans may have changed yet again. I’ll focus on what I know to be true. First, the Augusta Symphony exists because of its expert and dedicated musicians. What a terrible time so many of them have suffered due to loss of work and opportunities to share what they love to do most! But how resilient they have shown themselves to be, spending the lockdown teaching virtually, composing pieces Thank you for staying the course with us. The shared through social media, and remaining Symphony and the Miller are stronger for this Executive Director enthusiastic about whatever curveballs get experience and because of your commitment thrown their way. to our mission. Second, I am beyond grateful for Maestro Dirk Anne Catherine Murray Meyer and the staff of the Symphony and the Executive Director Miller Theater. Together, we’ve planned and successfully marketed the 20-21 Season, only to have to “Reimagine Fall” to accommodate smaller orchestras and audiences. We spent the summer of COVID on a co-branding campaign, “Together We Are Music” that reminded the community that the Symphony and the Miller are one and the same and ready to welcome them back as soon as conditions allow. It has been awe-inspiring to see what develops during our physically-distanced brainstorm sessions in the theater, and I could not be more proud of what we have accomplished together. What motivates us most is YOU, our patrons. We are emotionally invested in sharing the joy of music with all of you, even if it means tossing out one beautifully-designed concert for another smaller, masked, concession-free concert. I can attest that the same amount of passion is infused in whatever iteration you may be enjoying this evening.
