The Gays in This Gay Press Exclusive, Queen Bey Talks Being Inspired by Her Gay Fans, Loving Lady Gaga and Remaking ‘A Star Is Born’
Beyoncé ‘4’ The Gays In this gay press exclusive, Queen Bey talks being inspired by her gay fans, loving Lady Gaga and remaking ‘A Star Is Born’ BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI f there’s any girl who runs the world, it’s Beyoncé. The reigning diva – she’s called Queen Bey for a reason, people – is one of the biggest and best voices behind a long run of hits dating back to the late ’90s, when she was part of Isupreme girl-group Destiny’s Child. Years later, Beyoncé still demonstrates just how irreplaceable she is as a solo artist, having released four albums – and dedicating her latest one, “4,” to that milestone – with some of the most memorable and gay-celebrated singles in pop music history. Not every artist can say they’ve had a gay boy lead a football team to glory by performing “Single Ladies,” as seen on “Glee.” And not every artist can say they have 16 Grammy Awards, making her one of the most honored artists in Grammy history. But that’s Queen Bey, who’s also assembled a gaggle of gay fans who are – you guessed it – crazy in love with her. In this exclusive chat with Beyoncé, her first gay press interview since 2006, the singer/actress/glamour-girl spoke about how the fierceness of her gay fans inspires her, the intimidation she’s feeling following in the footsteps of Judy and Barbra for her upcoming role in “A Star Is Born,” and what she really meant by the “girls” who run the world. -
Run the World
Run the World Het vermeende spanningsveld tussen feminisme en seksualiteit in de hedendaagse popmuziek Loes Berends 07-07-2015 Master Kunst- en Cultuurwetenschappen Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen Run the World This goes out to all the women getting it in, you on your grind To all the men that respect, point out that, please accept my shine Boy you know you love it how we smart enough to make these millions Strong enough to bear the children, then get back to business. (Beyoncé, Run the World (Girls), 2011) 1 Abstract Run the World The supposed field of tension between feminism and female sexuality in modern pop music. Recently more and more female pop stars started to declare to be feminists. Singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is one of them. During her VMA performance in 2014 she made a significant feminist statement while performing her song ***Flawless, standing in front of a giant luminous FEMINIST sign. A lot of critique on this statement followed. Although Beyoncé is claiming to be a feminist, she has been putting a lot of emphasis on her body, looks and sexuality, in both her music and her videos. Therefore, the current study examines how Beyoncés feminist claim can be interpreted through theories about (modern) feminism and sexualization in pop culture, and thereby how these subjects intertwine and contradict. It analyses how core values in pop culture like authenticity, image, sexuality, tone of voice, context, commerciality, and personal autonomy are used in creating a personal message like Beyoncé does. The research focuses on Beyoncé as an artist, her career, and her newest self-titled album including the song ***Flawless. -

Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences
Shrews, Moneylenders, Soldiers, and Moors: Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Harelik, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Professor Lesley Ferris, Adviser Professor Jennifer Schlueter Professor Shilarna Stokes Professor Robin Post Copyright by Elizabeth Harelik 2016 Abstract Shakespeare’s plays are often a staple of the secondary school curriculum, and, more and more, theatre artists and educators are introducing young people to his works through performance. While these performances offer an engaging way for students to access these complex texts, they also often bring up topics and themes that might be challenging to discuss with young people. To give just a few examples, The Taming of the Shrew contains blatant sexism and gender violence; The Merchant of Venice features a multitude of anti-Semitic slurs; Othello shows characters displaying overtly racist attitudes towards its title character; and Henry V has several scenes of wartime violence. These themes are important, timely, and crucial to discuss with young people, but how can directors, actors, and teachers use Shakespeare’s work as a springboard to begin these conversations? In this research project, I explore twenty-first century productions of the four plays mentioned above. All of the productions studied were done in the United States by professional or university companies, either for young audiences or with young people as performers. I look at the various ways that practitioners have adapted these plays, from abridgments that retain basic plot points but reduce running time, to versions incorporating significant audience participation, to reimaginings created by or with student performers. -

The Politics of Beyoncé's Voice on “Run the World (Girls)”
Veronika Muchitsch : Neoliberal Sounds? The Politics of Beyoncé’s Voice on “Run The World (Girls)” Schriftenreihe herausgegeben vom Forschungszentrum Populäre Musik der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Neoliberal Sounds? The Politics of Beyoncé’s Voice on “Run The World (Girls)” Veronika Muchitsch “Boy you know you love it How we're smart enough to make these millions Strong enough to bear the children Then get back to business” – Beyoncé, “Run The World (Girls)” (2011) In 2016, Beyoncé is one of the world’s most accomplished entertainers – a skillful dancer, a celebrated singer, and a pop star of exceptional magnitude. She is also acknowledged as a highly successful entrepreneur[1], whose newest product, a sports-fashion line introduced in April 2016, is yet another contribution to the ultimate “product”, the brand of Beyoncé herself. From early on in her career, Beyoncé’s image stressed themes of economic independence, capitalism, and consumerism in lyrics, videos and interviews. Over the span of more than two decades, they have been carefully compounded with selected biographical anecdotes from a childhood determined by profit-oriented parents, an emphasis on individualization and a multi-faceted self. Collectively, these themes have contributed to the image of a larger-than- life star; a perfect exemplification of successful neoliberal entrepreneurship. In this article, I argue that Beyoncé’s image is strongly informed by neoliberal governmentality and its specific gendered manifestation of post-feminism. Further, I suggest 1 Veronika Muchitsch : Neoliberal Sounds? The Politics of Beyoncé’s Voice on “Run The World (Girls)” that these ideologies do not only inform Beyoncé’s overall image but also become audible in the singer’s vocal sounds.
