30th June 2017 34

Dear all,

It was wonderful to come together as a full school for our assembly on Wednesday morning. Year 10 students shared a series of poems with our school to support us in reflecting on the terrible tragedies that our country has experienced and how we can make an active choice to pursue peace, to be kind and to help others despite adversity. I shared with students a fitting memorial and one we could perhaps all currently choose to adopt. During the English Civil War Sir Robert Shirley built the stunning Staunton Harold Church, in Leicestershire, and erected a moving memorial plaque: “When all things sacred were throughout the nation either destroyed or profaned, Sir Robert Shirley, Baronet, founded this church whose singular praise is to have done the best of things in the worst of times and hoped them in the most calamitous”. Words, I certainly believe are worth holding onto and striving for.

This week has been one of so many successes; with further wins on the athletics field and incredible performances by our ArcherShop choir at St Jude’s proms. Additionally, Year 10 have taken part in an excellent SRE Day which included a moving presentation by an ex-offender and enjoyed a Taster Day at Woodhouse College. The Principal of Woodhouse College, John Rubinstein, has already commented on how impressed his staff were with our students today and we are delighted to have already afforded them the opportunity of an experience of 6th form life.

Next week is a busy one, as we look forward to welcoming our Year 6 families for their Induction Week events. It seems hard to believe that our September 2017 cohort will make our school full for the first time and that we will be 5 years old as a school. However, with 53 siblings in the cohort I know we have many experienced hands!

We look forward to taking Year 7, Year 8 and Year 10 on their trip days on Thursday. Please do check emails carefully in relation to payments, timings and required equipment. Year 9 have gone off to Stubbers for the weekend today (we wish them a wonderful time) and they will spend Thursday taking part in their SRE day at Upper School.

With my best wishes,

Lucy Harrison Headteacher

Thank you so much to Peter Copley for programme design once again this year. RESTART PARTY – Mr Pearson

Come and get your electronics fixed at the Archer Academy’s Restart Party!

Tuesday 4 July, 2pm-4pm, 3 Beaumont Close, The Bishops Avenue, London N2 0GA.

If you’ve got any broken electronics kicking around, bring them along to the Archer Academy’s Restart Party on 4 July and we’ll help you sort them out.

Our Year 10s have been working with engineers from Restart, a social enterprise that teaches people how to save electronics from the scrapheap. They’ll either fix your item, or give you advice about what to try next; either way, they’re bound to save you some money.

We want to fix as many items as we can for the people in our community, so please share the news with your friends and neighbours – and bring your broken stuff along to us on the day. And if you’re an engineer – or just a bit handy – and would like to come and help, we’d love to have you; please email us on [email protected] putting Restart Party help as the subject.

Thanks very much!

HEAD OF YEAR UPDATES – Mr Naylor

World Refugee Week: ‘I urge you to celebrate the extraordinary courage and contributions of refugees past and present.’ Kofi Annan

Year 10 – Mr Savage I'm writing to you this week from an office at Woodhouse College as our Year 10 group are currently sat in their first A-Level taster sessions. The students had an excellent start to the day and arrived punctually (some even arrived before me!) looking smart and comfortable and as they entered the building, they looked very much the part. I am looking forward to discussing their lessons with them at lunch time.

Yesterday we had our SRE workshops and I was really impressed with the way Year 10 dealt with sensitive and sometimes awkward subject matter with sensitivity and maturity. The day finished with a talk from an ex-convict who has turned his life around and now runs a charity going into schools and warning children about the dangers of gangs and crime. For the final hour of the day in assembly you could hear a pin drop. The students asked some excellent questions which helped create a fantastic Q&A at the end of the day and I really feel they took a lot away from the day.

Next week we've got our end of year trip to Southend-On-Sea could I ask that any remaining payments are made this weekend. The cost is £15 and this covers coach travel. Students will need to bring money if they want to visit the Aquarium or go on rides at Adventure Island, this is not included in the £15.

Have a lovely weekend.

Nutshells of the week Each week we will be providing Year 10 students with nutshells of the week with the expectation that every Year 10 Archer student will be able to recall and apply the seven nutshells from each core subject by the end of this half term. Please find this week’s nutshells below. Perhaps you can test your child on them over the weekend. The nutshells are also available on SMHW notices tab.

Year 10 Stars of the Week

Rio, Lania, Isabelle, Zaynah, Yolanda, Sama - reading poems during the full school assembly.

Y Y

Year 9 – Ms Humphrey Year 9 have had a particularly good week as we head towards the end of the academic year. I was impressed with their conduct in the whole school assembly as we reflected on current events and taking care of one another led by Miss Harrison.

9DPE enjoyed their visit to Highgate Cemetery, not in the rain despite best attempts from British weather. Our tour guide commented that our students had provided him with some of the best and mature questions and knowledge of the Victorian era and he is very much looking forward to 9CJO and 9GMC visiting next Wednesday.

I am thrilled to be taking Year 9 away to Stubbers this weekend, please check Facebook and Twitter for updates.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at Parents Evening last night. There was lots of exciting information about Year 9 joining Upper School in September and I hope you found the presentations useful. I cannot wait to see Year 9 looking smart and GCSE ready in their blazers this September. For those who could not attend, the slides and handouts will be shared next week.

You will have received an email about Grad Fest today. This will be a celebration of Year 9’s amazing efforts in the past year and a marker of their exciting transition to Upper School. The cost of the ticket £15 or £10 is now on your Parentpay account, so please can I ask you to make payment and also check that any other balances are cleared in good time before the end of term.

Graduation Pass Ahead of Grad Fest, Year 9 students are compiling an ‘effort report’ called Graduation Pass, which will act as their admission ticket. Students have all been given copies of their pass and must ask individual subject teachers for scores in order to complete the pass. Parents please ask your child to show you their pass because the last step is for you to sign it. Students will then hand in their completed reports by next Friday, 7th July.

Year 9 Stars of the Week

Daniel Q – For his fantastic portrayal of Dr Watson. Mujgan C – For her helpful, positive attitude in the run up to Stubbers

Year 8 – Mr McSherry Time seems to be moving at a rate that I am struggling to comprehend. Year 9 will be upon us before we know it.

But first.... we must finish year 8 on a high, we must maintain the high expectations we have set for ourselves and continue to build good habits ready for the next year of our journey together.

Learning Review day (Friday 14th July) is approaching and this time it will take an evaluative feel for the year group. That means your son/daughter will reflect on Year 8 and consider just how productive it had been for them. What are the positives, where have we flourished, where has progress been made, what improvements are still to come?

The year group's achievement trip to London Zoo is on Thursday next week. Please ensure that your child arrives in school at 9am prompt. We will meet on the playground. This provides a unique opportunity for the whole year team to come together and have some good old fashioned fun. I look forward to a surge of payments and being able to confirm numbers.

Have a great weekend.

Year 8 Stars of the Week

Fawaz A - for showing great resilience during the reconnect week Fitness Challenge Minnie H - for a random act of kindness

Year 7 – Mr Mustafa Year 7 have continued to demonstrate their resilience and work ethic this week as we prepare for the rewards of next week when most of us shall be visiting Thorpe Park to celebrate their first year with us at The Archer Academy. This has been a very creative week in the lead up to this celebratory trip – Year 7 have been filming and editing their own adverts in Thematic Learning to showcase their concepts for their own theme parks. I eagerly await their pitches to their Thematic Learning teachers and cannot wait to see which groups get to put their ideas to the dragons! It has been wonderful to see their approach to this project and that their energy has not waned as we approach the end of what has been a very busy term.

Likewise, I have been hugely impressed by those that instead of attending Thorpe Park have volunteered to model the Archer Way for our new students starting in September. This just goes to show the incredible sense of community at the school and the Year 7 students should be very proud of this and the warm welcome that they are providing to the new year group.

I have also enjoyed reading the postcards diligently delivered to me by the students. It was heart-warming to read all of their achievements over the past year and to see how much care they have taken with completing this task. Special mentions must go to Aleena, Mouni, Flavia, Tia, Kevin, George and Ammarah who all produced beautiful postcards for their tutor displays.

Year 7 have also engaged in a number of events at lunchtimes when we launched Reconnect Week 2017 at Lower School on Monday. They have had the opportunity to engage in a number of workshops and lectures, which have focussed on positive mental health and mindfulness. I am sure these helpful sessions will have provided them all with useful strategies to maintain the current standards of excellence as we move towards the end of term.

To all of Year 7 and their families, have a lovely weekend!

Year 7 Stars of the Week

Flavia 7SJO and George 7ETH for their excellent postcards!
