Ironi- cally, the stern face that most Americans now associate with Uncle Sam actually belonged to Flagg. In order to save on the hassle and expense of hiring a model, Flagg painted a self-portrait and then decorated it in the icon’s traditional hat and garb. This photo was taken by civil engineer Germán Pereira (bottom, right) on May 10, 2004 at 5:40 p.m., at the Parque Forestal in Santiago, Chile. The image shows State Police on horseback with an unusual creature crossing the road behind one of the police (circled in red). The photo was authenticated by Erick Martinez (bottom left) of CIFAE Chile. Interestingly, strange lights were also seen in the same general area at about the same time that this photo was taken.
