UFO WAVES: AN INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos FOTOCAT Project [email protected] Introduction In the study of UFO phenomena there are several topics that emerge as key issues for the understanding and potential resolution of this worldwide enigma. The subject of UFO waves and UFO flaps is, evidently, one of these. Compiling bibliographies of research items has been a recurrent interest in my investigative life (1-7), as I have always thought that, as in mainstream science disciplines, progress is linked to the knowledge of prior work in the field. Those who ignore what their senior colleagues have produced on a given matter waste time duplicating past efforts or are unable to build upon previous finds. Over the years, the field of ufology has produced many authoritative bibliographies. With a few exceptions, these are general lists of literature, sometimes annotated, but usually not organized by topic (8-28). Nevertheless, these assist the researcher and represent an academic advancement. As I am committed to the concept of achieving a synthesis of knowledge in some of the main areas of the study of UFOs (29), I think a more pragmatic approach is to design a series of very specific, subject-focused bibliographies. As a practical example, I have combed through my files to create a thorough bibliography of articles and papers related to the mystery of UFO waves, those periods when UFO reporting increases noticeably and suddenly with respect to average historical records. I have been assisted by a number of top scholars who have contributed references, actual materials, pdfs and online links to create what is intended to be a comprehensive list of the literature on this subject published all over the world. -

SUNlite Shedding some light on UFOlogy and UFOs Since we are surrounded by them all of our lives, I still find it quite remarkable that so many adults can observe a stellar body and see fit to call it in as a “UFO.” Furthermore, what does it say about the total UFO phenomenon when these adults are often in groups and watch these stars for hours? My images do not show any “canals” but, when staring at an eyepiece for hours, the very minute details can appear to look like lines. Percival Lowell’s arguments with the astronomical community about the canals he mapped/observed tend to mirror some of the argu- ments found in UFOlogy. La photosynthèse serait apparue chez certains organismes primitifs entre 2.800 et -2.400 millions d’années si l’on en croit certaines archives géologiques terrestres. Mais certains la font remonter bien plus tôt en faisant l’hypothèse que les stromatolites que l’on retrouve dans des couches plus anciennes encore sont bien le produit d’une activité biologique. Actuellement, nous n’en sommes sûrs que pour ceux datant de -2.724 millions d’années mais des stromatolites existaient déjà sur Terre il y a 3,5 milliards d’années environ. Quoiqu'il en soit, une certitude demeure, concernant les immenses dépôts de fer du bassin de Hamersley en Australie. Ils datent de l’époque du Sidérien alors que la surface des continents était devenue suffisamment importante pour que se forment des mers peu profondes entourées de grande plates-formes continentales. Les conditions étaient remplies pour que de grands tapis de bactéries construisent des stromatolites en quantités importantes et dégagent massivement de l’oxygène par photosynthèse. Ce gaz corrosif a alors pu oxyder le fer en solution dans les océans et entraîner sa précipitation sous forme d’hydroxyde de fer, de carbonate de fer, de silicate ou de sulfures, selon des variations de l’acidité et du degré d’oxydoréduction de l’eau de mer. C’est ce qu’on appelle la Grande oxydation ou la Catastrophe de l’oxygène. Vers -1.900 millions d’années, la presque totalité du fer présent dans les océans avait précipité et il se retrouve aujourd’hui dans les grands gisements de minerai mondiaux tels que ceux de Hamersley. -

They are neither brown dwarfs nor planets. In this paper, their nomenclature, history of discovery, sites of detection, formation mechanisms, and future directions of research are reviewed. Most free-floating, non-deuterium-burning, substellar objects share the same formation mechanism as low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, but there are still a few caveats, such as the value of the opacity mass limit, the minimum mass at which an isolated body can form via turbulent fragmentation from a cloud. The least massive free-floating substellar objects found to date have masses of about 0.004 Msol, but current and future surveys should aim at breaking this record. I’m very excited to have a wonderful guest for our second show, Garik Israelian. Garik is a professor of astronomy at the Institute for Astrophysics on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. His research involves an array of interesting areas interwoven with spectroscopy including extrasolar planets, supernovae, and black holes. Garik is extremely well-known as the founder and director of the Starmus Festival, a unique and amazing get-together of astronomy enthusiasts including astronomers, astronaut explorers, musicians, artists, and forward-thinkers of all types. The second Starmus Festival just occurred this past fall in the Canaries, and the first took place in 2011. I had the pleasure of participating in Starmus and also working with Garik on the book of speeches from the first conference, and so it’s a real pleasure to welcome you, Garik, for the next hour.
