The will of Jane Evans, "late of Rhyd y Karw, Trefeglwys," made 28 Mar 15 Ch. I (1640) and proved 9 Jul 1640 is abstracted in Montgomeryshire Collections Vol. XXVI, pp. 14-15, as follows:

"Christian burial. To well-beloved daughter, Sara Parton, 10s; to grandchild, Edward Evans, 12d; to grandchild, Richard Parton, 12d. "Testatrix admitted her indebtedness to her well-beloved Daughter, Ursula Evans, amounting to £300; in satisfaction of this testatrix devised to Ursula all the annuity and arrearages due to her by Bridget Evans of Rhyd y Karw, widow, or due from Edward Evans, son and heir apparent unto my beloved son, Morgan Evans, deceased, by virtue of a decree obtained in the Court of Chancery on the 25th of April, 11 Ch. I [1636] and the order thereupon, dated 28th June, 16 Ch. I [1641]; testatrix acknowledged having received the sum of £5, part of this, from John ap Evan of Trefeglwys, miller. "Executor--Daughter, Ursula "Witnesses--Cornelius Evans, Thomas Morris, Hugh ap Humphrey, Thomas Williams."

Rhyd-y-Carw (Stag Ford) Is described in an article on "Half- Timbered Houses of Montgomeryshire" by T. E. Price published in Montgomeryshire Collections Vol. XXI, pp. 306-9. A drawing and description of this substantial two-story house with a large stone chimney at each end is included. It was the the 17th and 18th century residence of "the family of Evans of Rhyd-y-Carw, descended from the eleventh century Lords of Yale. From them it passed by marriage to the Glansevern family."

The Trefeglwys baptismal record of Catherine identifies her father as Edward Evans "armig," that is, armor bearer, or squire.

Montgomeryshire Collections Vol XXI, pp. 308-9, under the heading "Evans of Rhyd-y-Carw (Stag Ford)" includes the information which I have rearranged below and which is credited to Nicholas Bennett, Esq. of Glan yr Avon:

" The Family derived their descent from Lleweln Aurdorchog (Leolinus Torquatus), Lord of Yale, in the eleventh century, who married Eva, daughter of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, Prince of Powys.

"Blome, in his 'Britannia,' published in 1673, includes Edward Evans of Rhyd-y-Carw among the resident gentry of the country.

"Edward Evans had by his first wife Dorothy--

1. Edward Evans (the second), his heir, who married Martha and had issue Edward Evans (the third) and Ursula Evans. Edward Evans (the second) died in his father's lifetime, and was buried at Trefeglwys, 30th November 1687.

2. Morgan Evans, who settled upon an estate in Llangurig, and he and his wife Judith are parties to a deed bearing date 23 February, 26 Charles II (1675).

"Edward Evans (the first) survived his son ten years, and in the year 1697 he settled the Rhyd-y-Carw Estate on his grandson, Edward Evans (the third), whose daughter and heiress, Sarah, married in 1725 Charles Davies of Llivior. She was left a widow three years later, and married, secondly, John Pryce Clunne."

Montgomeryshire Collections Vol XXXVI, p. 28 includes the record of the burial of Edward Evans of Rhyd-y-Carw on 15 Mar 1698 at Welshpool. It also recounts some of the information quoted above.

Montgomeryshire Collections Vol XVIII quotes pp. 849-55 of a Vol. XXXIV, evidently a volume of court records, which includes papers relating to the delinquency of Edward Evans, a gentleman of Montgomeryshire. The dates are a little confusing but the record showed that he certified the following on 18 Oct 1648: "Know all men whom it may concern, that Edward Evans of Rhyd y Carw, in the County of Montgomery, Gent. (i.e., gentleman), took the National League and Covenant and the negative oath." This signified that Edward had agreed to support the Parliament and no longer the King. On the same date Edward petitioned the court, stating that he had been a servant of Prince Morris in the war against the Parliament, for which his estate was sequestered, and that he had petitioned Parliament in 1645 but did not proceed because he was informed that would be a "p'ticular Committee apointed for to compound in Wales." He now prayed that he be "admitted to a reasonable composition [ i.e., a reasonable fine] for his small Estate," which he claimed had a yearly value of £16 and was only a life estate. The property was described as a "tenement and landes in the posession off Griffith David, called Cwmgwernogge Gwerney Herrion," being of the yearly value of . . . £8, and Tan-y-lan in the possession of " Evan Davids pen Couch" of the yearly value of £4, and Keven Barrode in the possession of David Evans of the yearly value "before these troubles"of £4. However, Edward was unable to provide a deed that showed his ownership was confined to a life estate. An entry on the back of the folio included the name Edward Evans, bore the date 25 Oct 1649 and specified a fine of £48.

It is not clear why Rhyd-y-Carw was not sequestered and why Edward reported that the three properties sequestered were in the possession of others.

According to Montgomeryshire Collections Vol. XXI, p309, Morgan settled on an estate in Llangurig and he and his wife Judith were parties to a deed dated 23 Feb, 26 Charles II (1675). However, we find him in Trefeglwys and his will names his wife as Mary. Comment [AB11]: Needs investigating In the Trefeglwys burial record, Morgan is listed as "Morgan sen" of Nant-yr-Hafod. His son had been listed as "Morgan junr."

Nant-yr-Hafod is located just southwest of the village of Staylittle near the western edge of Trefeglwys Parish. It doesn't appear to be a town; it may be a house or estate like Rhyd-y-Carw. The words translate "brook" and "summer house."

The will of Morgan Evans reads as follows:

"The third day of Feb Ano Dom 1724 I Morgan Evans of Nantyrhafod in the P'sh of Trefeglwys and County of Montgomery, thanks be to the Almighty God, and calling to remembrance the uncertain Estate of this Transitory Life and that all flesh must yield unto Death when it shall please God to call, Do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following; first being penitent & sorry for all my Sins most humbly desiring forgiveness for the same I comend my Soul unto Almighty God my Savior and redeemer in whom and by whose merits I trust and believe assuredly to the Last, and to have full remission and forgiveness of all my Sins, and to Inherit the Kingdom of Heaven; and my body I comit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and for Setling of my Temporal Estate & such goods, Chattels & tofts as it hath pleasd God to bestow upon me; I do order, give and dispose the same in Manner and Form following : (that is to say) (jurisprimus?) He married MARGARET7 10 Oct 1714 in Llanidloes Parish, Montgomeryshire, Wales8. She was born in Wales, and died Aft. 1750 in PA9,10.

Notes for EVAN EVANS, SR.: On 6 Feb 1731 the Probate Court of Chester Co., PA recognized the death of Evan Evans and bound Margaret Evans, David Jenkins and John Morgan to be responsible for his estate.

In an undated listing presumably made in 1731 Margaret Evans was allowed various expenses from the estate of her deceased husband. These included the cost of a coffin and of "another coffin" and of "digging of graves." Margaret's name was signed by someone else.

In a document submitted to the Chester Co. Probate Court the appraisers of Evan Evans' estate stated that upon "narrower examination" they had decided to include £125 "in bond and bills that was made over to him by an assignment thereof from his father." They had previously omitted this from the inventory "by reason of his father and mother had been alive and we thought thee above money should maintain them while alive." The statement was signed by William Williams, Cadwaledor Jones, John Vaughn, John Morgan and Morris Rees.

A Chester County Orphans Court record of 27 Feb 1733/34 (which did not survive but was transcribed) stated that Margaret Evans had applied to the court that her children of the proper age should be permitted to choose their guardians. Since Martha and Mary were of age (that is, were 14 or over), they were permitted to choose Samuel Nutt and Richard Jones. The court chose the same persons to be the guardians for Margaret, Evan, Susanah, Thomas, Ann, Edward and Richard, "being minors."

On 21 Sep 1742 Richard Jones petitioned the Orphans Court for an accounting for the inheritance of Evan Evans, Jr, who had reached age 21. The estate was in the hands of the widow Margaret and Charles Gatlive, whom she had married in Jul 1735.

On 12 Oct 1742 appraisers submitted an evaluation of the real estate of Evan Evans, "yeoman deceased." The 250-acre "messuage plantation" with an "orchard meadow and other improvements" was evaluated at £125 after deduction of the widow's third and "the eldest son's two shares." There were 12 signatures: Thomas Howell, John Vaughn, Phinehas? Lewis, Thomas Green, Thomas Parkes, Peter Osborne, William Lewis, Thomas Downing, Francis Yarnall, Aaron Mendenhall, Richard Thomas, Jr. and Lawrance Cox.

On 21 Jun 1743 and 20 Dec 1743 Richard Jones petitioned the Orphans Court on behalf of the orphans for their share of the estate and for a final accounting, Charles Gatlive having died toward the end on 1742.

An Orphans Court document of 19 Jun 1744 evaluated the Evan Evans estate at £371 10 shillings 5 3/4 and found that £58 9 shillings 7 3/4 were due to the orphan children. £89 4 shillings 11 1/4 were allocated to the widow's third. Funeral charges were listed for deaths of Ann and Edward Evans. It was stated that at the time of the "intermarriage," that is, the marriage of Margaret and Charles Gatlive, Edward was 6 1/2 and Richard was 4 1/2. Ann apparently lived for six months after the marriage and Edward for two years. Signatures were: Richard Thomas, Thomas Worth and Aaron Ashbridge.

A document dated 23 Oct 1744 contained a detailed accounting for Evan's estate, arriving at somewhat different figures. Information on support allowances for children showed that Thomas was "about 9 years old at intermarriage." Signatures were Edward Brinton, Joseph Mendenhall and William Lewis.

Still another Orphans Court document, undated but evidently produced in 1744, evaluated the estate and disclosed that Susanna was apparently three years younger than Evan and that Richard was five years years younger than Susanna.

Notes for MARGARET: Charles Gatlive, Margaret's second husband, died in 1743 and left her an 83 1/3 acre plantation in Uwchlan Township. His will was signed 14 Mar 1742/43 and proved 6 Nov 1743.The will is in Chester Co. Book B, p 129 or 132. He left the 200 acres on which he lived, 1/2 to son James and 1/2 to eldest son Rees, and the rest of his goods to his daughters Elizabeth and Mary. Executor: son Rees. Overseers: Thomas Downing and Samuel John Sr. Witnesses: John Rigg, Jonathan Pugh, Henry Atherton.

Margaret (Evans) Gatlive and (her stepson) Rees Gatlive were present at the wedding of (her stepdaughter) Mary Gatlive on 25 Feb 1750. The wedding was recorded in the records of the Uwchlan and Goshen Monthly Meetings.

Years later, in 1783, Rees Gatlive, yeoman of Uwchlan, left a will that provided for his wife and daughters and named as guardians of the children: Thomas Evans, George Thomas, and William Milhous. Executors: wife Ann, brother-in-law Cadwalader Jones.

Notes for EVAN EVANS: When Evan reached 21 in 1742 his guardian petitioned the Chester Co. Orphans Court for his inheritance. It required about two years for the court actions to be completed and for Evan to become owner of the 250-acre farm in Lionville. See details in notes regarding Evan's father.

Being in poor health, Evan made his will on 13 May 1748. It was proved on 1 Jun 1748 over the signatures of Peter Aston, Joseph Beeler and Cadwalader Jones, Jr. He left his land to his brother Thomas except for 40 acres of the east end; also a horse and other livestock. His mother received six £ and the rest of the livestock. His brother Richard received the 40 acres excepted from Thomas' legacy. He gave one shilling each to his sisters Martha Hopps (i.e., Hoopes), Mary Cleton (i.e., Clayton), Margaret Todhunter, and Susanna Sorel (i.e., Serrell). Thomas was named executor. An inventory was made of the estate by John Vaughn. Major items included : a purse and apparel, a bed, a servant man, a gray mare and colt, a brown filly, a gray colt, a yoke of oxen, bulls, cows and a calf, 10 acres of wheat and 10 acres of rye. Notes for THOMAS EVANS: According to Susannah Wilson Brody ("A History of Uwchlan Township 1682 - 1782") Thomas was a Quaker and therefore not in military service during the Revolution. However, he and his son Evan were Uwchlan representatives to the Chester County Committee of Safety, which was charged with requisitioning supplies and preparing for defense.

Records of burials at the Uwchlan Friends burial ground, abstracted by Gilbert Cope, showed that Thomas was charged for the following: 21 Sep 1769, digging his son's grave; 1 May 1772, 15 Mar 1773, 2 Apr 1773, in each case for digging his Negro child's grave; 5 Jan 1779, for digging Jane Reese's grave; 15 May 1782, for "grave of his Negro woman and one ditto last fall which both they did part themselves."

The will of Thomas Evans was made on 26 Dec 1805 and proved on 1 Oct 1807. It gave sons Evan and Ezekial and daughter Eleanor, wife of Henry Lewis, each a piece of land next to the Uwchlan Meeting House property. Other real estate was to be sold except 60 acres then in the possession of son Ezekial and the money divided, 1/2 now, 1/2 after the wife's death, among five children: Evan, Jesse, Isaac, Thomas and Eleanor Lewis. Ezekial was to pay eight £ per acre for his 60 acres. The wife was to have the use of 1/2 of the proceeds from the real estate during her life. The share of son Thomas was to be reduced by the amount he owed his father for advances made for him to purchase land from Uriah Brown in Franklin Co., PA. The amount of these advances was specified in pounds and dollars. Evan Evans was named as executor. Witnesses were Samuel Baldwin, Joshua Baldwin and George Baldwin.
