  • Eoin Harty in Profile by ED GOLDEN Turf Writer
Eoin Harty in Profile By ED GOLDEN Turf Writer There was always an air of levity at Bob Baffert’s barn when Eoin Harty worked there. Not that the game they played wasn’t serious. It was. Preparing 1,000-pound equine athletes with spindly legs to perform at their peak on the world’s stage is not a job for anyone in short pants. During the seven years Harty was Baffert’s assistant, they won the Kentucky Derby twice–with Silver Charm in 1997 and Real Quiet in 1998–and missed by a heart-breaking nose with Cavonnier in 1996. But in between the regimented tedium, there was always time for a good hoot. Fact is, it was and still is part of Baffert’s DNA. “He’s got a sense of humor,” Baffert said of Harty. “He has a good disposition and we liked to have a lot of fun, so he fit in well.” But work came first, and Harty had his priorities in order. His foundation was ingrained. Lean and sinewy with chiseled features, Harty hails from a family of Irish horsemen that extends back at least five generations. His grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather were trainers in their native Ireland. Eoin (pronounced Owen) began to hone his craft under the learned wing of the late John Russell before joining with Baffert, who saw a © BENOIT PHOTO master in the making. “Eoin showed up every day,” Baffert recalled. “He works hard and he’s passionate about what he does, and I like that in all my assistants.

  • Goldencents Set to Run Next in Cigar Mile
Goldencents Set to Run Next in Cigar Mile By Steve Haskin, @SteveHaskin BloodHorse.com Photo: Dave Harmon Goldencents won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Goldencents, winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), will make his next start in the $500,000 Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Racetrack Nov. 30, according to majority owner Glenn Sorgenstein. "After the Breeders' Cup we looked at the race and thought (the Cigar mile) might come up little quick, but Doug (trainer O'Neill) and I decided to watch the horse and let him tell us," Sorgenstein said Nov. 7. "He bounced out of the race as if he hadn't run. Each day, his ears were pricked, he was alert and ready to go, and he was looking for his food. He showed no signs of stiffness and has been perfectly sound. "Originally, I had told Doug that the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) makes sense, because we wouldn't have to ship, it was his home track (Santa Anita Park), and we'd be assured of good weather. But then I started thinking, 'What the heck; from the polls we've seen, he's second to Will Take Charge as leading 3-year-old, and sending him to New York would give the East Coast writers an opportunity to see him race. And Aqueduct is a good fast track where speed holds.' "It took while, but we've finally figured out the jockey situation and we feel confident with Rafael (Bejarano). We feel he'll (Goldencents) do great in New York and we owed it to him to get him out there.

  • Tht Bloodstock: Patterns of Motion Analysis with Kerry Thomas and Pete Denk
THT BLOODSTOCK: PATTERNS OF MOTION ANALYSIS WITH KERRY THOMAS AND PETE DENK KENTUCKY DERBY 147 | MAY 1, 2021 | THT BLOODSTOCK: PATTERNS OF MOTION | 1 KENTUCKY DERBY 2021 HERD DYNAMICS ANALYSIS A personal note from Kerry M. Thomas This year’s Kentucky Derby report was in jeopardy. Not because of all that has been going on in the world, but because the uncertainty and overwhelming emotional stress in my personal life had me close to pulling out the white flag. My dearly beloved life-partner Tonia, who had been battling cancer since the summer of 2018, passed away in March. Breast cancer had traveled to her brain, (my father died of brain cancer, also at home, in 2002) and two days after my birthday on October 22, 2020, we were told Tonia had 6 months to live. She passed on March 6th, 2021. Two days after Tonia left us, my mother, who I also am caregiver for, fell and fractured her hip. At the writing of this very sentence my mother is yet in a rehab facility struggling to recover. It goes without saying that as March churned into April, doing our 11th derby report wasn’t high on my list of things to do. But there was something that wasn’t right about not doing our analysis of the contenders. It was a quiet nudge I was unable to ignore. I just couldn’t let the horses run away from me. I began to realize that not doing the report wasn’t an option, I needed the distraction. Horses are my passion and racing is the sport I love.
