  • Eoin Harty in Profile by ED GOLDEN Turf Writer
Eoin Harty in Profile By ED GOLDEN Turf Writer There was always an air of levity at Bob Baffert’s barn when Eoin Harty worked there. Not that the game they played wasn’t serious. It was. Preparing 1,000-pound equine athletes with spindly legs to perform at their peak on the world’s stage is not a job for anyone in short pants. During the seven years Harty was Baffert’s assistant, they won the Kentucky Derby twice–with Silver Charm in 1997 and Real Quiet in 1998–and missed by a heart-breaking nose with Cavonnier in 1996. But in between the regimented tedium, there was always time for a good hoot. Fact is, it was and still is part of Baffert’s DNA. “He’s got a sense of humor,” Baffert said of Harty. “He has a good disposition and we liked to have a lot of fun, so he fit in well.” But work came first, and Harty had his priorities in order. His foundation was ingrained. Lean and sinewy with chiseled features, Harty hails from a family of Irish horsemen that extends back at least five generations. His grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather were trainers in their native Ireland. Eoin (pronounced Owen) began to hone his craft under the learned wing of the late John Russell before joining with Baffert, who saw a © BENOIT PHOTO master in the making. “Eoin showed up every day,” Baffert recalled. “He works hard and he’s passionate about what he does, and I like that in all my assistants.

Goldencents Set to Run Next in Cigar Mile By Steve Haskin, @SteveHaskin BloodHorse.com Photo: Dave Harmon Goldencents won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Goldencents, winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), will make his next start in the $500,000 Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Racetrack Nov. 30, according to majority owner Glenn Sorgenstein. "After the Breeders' Cup we looked at the race and thought (the Cigar mile) might come up little quick, but Doug (trainer O'Neill) and I decided to watch the horse and let him tell us," Sorgenstein said Nov. 7. "He bounced out of the race as if he hadn't run. Each day, his ears were pricked, he was alert and ready to go, and he was looking for his food. He showed no signs of stiffness and has been perfectly sound. "Originally, I had told Doug that the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) makes sense, because we wouldn't have to ship, it was his home track (Santa Anita Park), and we'd be assured of good weather. But then I started thinking, 'What the heck; from the polls we've seen, he's second to Will Take Charge as leading 3-year-old, and sending him to New York would give the East Coast writers an opportunity to see him race. And Aqueduct is a good fast track where speed holds.' "It took while, but we've finally figured out the jockey situation and we feel confident with Rafael (Bejarano). We feel he'll (Goldencents) do great in New York and we owed it to him to get him out there.

  • Alhambra and the Kentucky Derby
Alhambra and the Kentucky Derby By Gary Frueholz, Dilbeck Real Estate A winner of the Kentucky Derby used to call Alhambra home... and I am not speaking about a person. Determine won the 1954 Kentucky Derby. Out of the mold of Seabiscuit, the legendary winner of the 1939 Santa Anita Handicap, Determine was a small horse with a determined nature. In the Kentucky Derby that year, Determine was the smallest of the 17 entries. But unlike Seabiscuit, a horse with an unorthodox gate that people joked about looking more appropriate pulling a milk truck, Determine, with his picturesque proportions and classic stride gave the clear message of being a racehorse. Alhambra notable, Andy Crevolin, not only owned the Chrysler dealership at Main Street and Bushnell Street in our city during the 1930's through 1950's, but also established one of horse racing's most impressive stables of thoroughbreds during the 1940's and 50's. His star horse was Determine. And Andy Crevolin kept his stable here in Alhambra, south of Poplar Boulevard between Main Street and Fremont Avenue at the bottom of the hill, where the Target Department Store now is. Gary Wagner and his brother grew up in Alhambra near the Crevolin stables during the 1940's and 50's. Gary's brother Ron, exercised Crevolin's horses, and this afforded Gary with a good perspective of the race horses. "My brother would exercise the horses," said Gary Wagner. "He (Crevolin) had Determine at the Popular stables." By mid 1950's a higher and better use of the land the Crevolin stables occupied had been found and the stable was closed with many of the horses then being moved out to Santa Anita.
