Alhambra and the Kentucky Derby
Alhambra and the Kentucky Derby By Gary Frueholz, Dilbeck Real Estate A winner of the Kentucky Derby used to call Alhambra home... and I am not speaking about a person. Determine won the 1954 Kentucky Derby. Out of the mold of Seabiscuit, the legendary winner of the 1939 Santa Anita Handicap, Determine was a small horse with a determined nature. In the Kentucky Derby that year, Determine was the smallest of the 17 entries. But unlike Seabiscuit, a horse with an unorthodox gate that people joked about looking more appropriate pulling a milk truck, Determine, with his picturesque proportions and classic stride gave the clear message of being a racehorse. Alhambra notable, Andy Crevolin, not only owned the Chrysler dealership at Main Street and Bushnell Street in our city during the 1930's through 1950's, but also established one of horse racing's most impressive stables of thoroughbreds during the 1940's and 50's. His star horse was Determine. And Andy Crevolin kept his stable here in Alhambra, south of Poplar Boulevard between Main Street and Fremont Avenue at the bottom of the hill, where the Target Department Store now is. Gary Wagner and his brother grew up in Alhambra near the Crevolin stables during the 1940's and 50's. Gary's brother Ron, exercised Crevolin's horses, and this afforded Gary with a good perspective of the race horses. "My brother would exercise the horses," said Gary Wagner. "He (Crevolin) had Determine at the Popular stables." By mid 1950's a higher and better use of the land the Crevolin stables occupied had been found and the stable was closed with many of the horses then being moved out to Santa Anita. -

Race to the Derby
RACE TO THE DERBY Welcome to our annual “Race to the Derby” Fantasy Horse Racing contest at the Pleasanton Off-Track Betting facility! The contest is all about building a fantasy stable of 3-year-old horses and following them through the pursuit of making the Kentucky Derby. The first race of our contest is Saturday, January 7 and it concludes with the running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 6. THE DEADLINE TO ENTER IS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3!!!!! Our scoring system will follow the structure for the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep series again this year, with one exception. The UAE Derby is worth 50-20-10-5 points this year, rather than the inflated value the Derby committee awards for the race. Here’s how you play the contest. To start, pick any 10, 3-year-old horses (as of Jan. 1) for your beginning stable. Points are earned by how the horses finish in the string of races throughout the Derby prep season. The first four finishers in each prep race earn points for their owners. The points are the same used to determine the field for the Kentucky Derby. You can make six drops/additions along the way, but you will only get those six so use them wisely. At the end of the Kentucky Derby the final standings will be determined! You must enter at the Pleasanton OTB facility. Adds/drops can be made via e-mail or in person at the OTB. Send any questions to [email protected]. The cutoff to enter the contest is February 3!!!! Get your entry in earlier and have some fun! One entry per person and must show ID when entering. -

1/ST BET // WAGER GUIDE KENTUCKY DERBY MAY01/2021 CHURCHILL DOWNS MEET THE 2021 DERBY CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD ESSENTIAL QUALITY: Unbeaten in five career starts, this son of Tapit is the defending Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and reigning 2-year-old champ. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October. -

No depressing assisted living warehouses. “My father still drives,” Craig says. “He’s sharper than I am.” NThat’s a mouthful from Lewis who, while not verbose when he speaks, is all meat and potatoes…as straight as Princess Kate’s teeth. Little wonder he knows his way around the track. He began his training career in 1978 and got his first taste of racing before it was time for his Bar Mitzvah. “I used to go to the track when I was a kid with my dad and that’s how I got started,” Lewis said. “I was fascinated by horse racing. I would go to Caliente on weekends with my brother. I was nine and he was 10. We were betting quarters with bookmakers and just kind of got swept up by it all.” More than half a century later, the broom still has bristles, thanks in small part to Lewis’ affiliation early on with legendary trainer Hirsch Jacobs, whose remarkable achievements have faded into racing’s Graded stakes winner Za Approval, Lee Vickers up, trots by Clement on the way to the track hinterlands over time. -
