PROGRAM Traditional classical raga especially for noontime Brief explanation of the instruments Questions and answers Short folk song from the Indian state of Rajasthan STEVE ODA , on sarode, began his musical education at the age of seven, learning to play slide guitar and then jazz guitar. His love of musical creativity led him to the classical music of North India and the sarode. His practice started with Aashish Khan in 1971, and then in 1973, with Aashish's father, the legendary musician, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan. For the past 35 years Steve has learned this complex art form to carry on the teachings of his illustrious guru. His recordings are available on ITunes and CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com/steveoda ). MICHAEL LEWIS is one of the finest American tabla players today. A disciple of the late Ustad Allah Rahka, and long time student of Ustad Zakir Hussain, he has accompanied many Indian classical artists, including Ustad Zakir Hussain as a member of the Rhythm Experience, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Krishna Bhatt and Partho Chatterjee. Very popular in the Bay Area classical music scene, Michael is widely appreciated by artists for his lyrical style and sensitive accompaniments. PUSHPA ODA , a Kathak dance disciple of the late Sitara Devi, is playing a most important role by accompanying the ensemble on tanpura, a five-string drone instrument. .
