The Alphabet Soup Franklin Roosevelt’s Bureaucratic Expirement

Synopsis: We were in the ...and the people who used to be self reliant were now desperate to try something new...anything...

In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his candidate acceptance speech, told the American people, “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.”

The New Deal Roosevelt had promised America began in March, 1933 on the basis that the power of the federal government was needed to get the country out of the Depression. Banking reform laws, emergency relief programs, work relief programs, and agricultural programs were how they began. It would evolve into a second New Deal where unions were protected, the Social Security Act was established, and programs to aid tenant farmers and migrant workers were intiated. The New Deal was instituted under THREE MAIN DIRECTIVES: • RELIEF - to offer immediate help to those suffering from the Great Depression • RECOVERY - attempts to bring the nation back to pre-Depression lifestyles • REFORM - permanent programs made to make sure another Depression never happens again Most of the New Deal acts or agencies were known by their acronyms. Many called the New Deal programs FDR’s “Alphabet Soup”.

Some “Alphabet” agencies Congress established (like the Tennessee Valley Authority [TVA] ). Others were established through Roosevelt’s executive orders (like he Works Progress Administration [WPA] ). Some of the agencies still exist. Others have merged with other government departments and agencies. Some were abolished, and many were found unconstitutional.

By 1939, the New Deal had run its course. In the short term, the New Deal programs seemed to help improve the American people enduring the Depression. In the long run, however, the New Deal programs established expectations that the federal government could solve any economic and social affairs of America.

Our country had changed....
