Faulconbridge NSW 2776 1 2 Foreword Of all the ships that have flown the ensign of the Royal Australian Navy, there has never been one quite like the first HMAS Perth, a cruiser of the Second World War. In her short life of just less than three years as an Australian warship she sailed all the world’s great oceans, from the icy wastes of the North Atlantic to the steamy heat of the Indian Ocean and the far blue horizons of the Pacific. She survived a hurricane in the Caribbean and months of Italian and German bombing in the Mediterranean. One bomb hit her and nearly sank her. She fought the Italians at the Battle of Matapan in March, 1941, which was the last great fleet action of the British Royal Navy, and she was present in June that year off Syria when the three Australian services - Army, RAN and RAAF - fought together for the first time. Eventually, she was sunk in a heroic battle against an overwhelming Japanese force in the Java Sea off Indonesia in 1942. Fast and powerful and modern for her times, Perth was a light cruiser of some 7,000 tonnes, with a main armament of eight 6- inch guns, and a top speed of about 34 knots. She had a crew of about 650 men, give or take, most of them young men in their twenties. -

NAVY NEWS WEEK 35-2 27 August 2018 Russia debates giving up on building helicopter-carrier ships for its Navy Meduza 14:48, 20 august 2018 There‟s some confusion in Russia‟s shipbuilding business about whether or not the country is done trying to build helicopter carriers. Russia‟s industry and trade minister, Denis Manturov, said in an interview with the news agency Interfax on August 20 that these projects, “in a pure sense of the word,” are over, though the Navy will retain a few such ships. (Manturov added that Russia is still discussing the construction of a second aircraft carrier.) Almost immediately after the interview was published, however, a “high-placed source in Russia‟s shipbuilding industry” told RIA Novosti that the Defense Ministry hasn‟t yet made up its mind about the future of helicopter-carrier construction in Russia. In June 2017, Viktor Bursuk, the deputy head of Russia‟s Navy, said the country planned to acquire two helicopter-carrier ships and complete work on a new aircraft carrier before 2025. Moscow wanted to buy two Mistral-class helicopter-carrier ships from France, but the deal fell through in 2015, following the annexation of Crimea. Those vessels, built for Russia, were ultimately sold to Egypt. Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships. -

Naval Shipbuilding Plan
FOREWORD We are pleased to launch Australia’s first Naval Shipbuilding Plan to complement the strategic, capability investment, and industry plans for the Defence portfolio that were set out in the Turnbull Government’s 2016 Defence White Paper, 2016 Integrated Investment Program and 2016 Defence Industry Policy Statement. The Plan sets out how our Government is delivering on our commitment to build a strong, sustainable and innovative Australian naval shipbuilding industry. It provides the foundation for implementing the Government’s unprecedented commitment to the greatest regeneration of our country’s naval capability since the Second World War. At the same time it will create a long-term, sustainable naval shipbuilding and ship sustainment capability that will serve our strategic and economic interests for many decades. We are a maritime nation and our security depends on a modern and effective Navy. Our investment will ensure protection of our maritime borders, secure our immediate northern approaches and proximate sea lines of communications, and enable us to project force in the maritime environment. The Plan demonstrates how we are looking to the future and sets out the Australian Government’s vision to deliver and sustain modern, capable naval vessels, on time and on budget, maximising Australian industry involvement and contributing to a secure and prosperous future for our nation. The Coalition Government has taken decisive action to commence continuous naval shipbuilding as soon as practicable, bringing forward construction dates for both the offshore patrol vessels and future frigates. We have invested in the design and construction of the modern infrastructure needed in our construction shipyards to deliver complex warships and submarines on a continuous build basis. -

No one mine in the world has as much mobile machinery as Grasberg. At the beginning of 2013, over 450 Cummins engines were in service at Freeport-McMoRan’s mine and port operations. Built at an oxygen-depleted altitude of 4,285 metres (14,000 ft), Grasberg is a spectacular feat of engineering. It is the world’s largest copper and gold mine in terms of reserves, and its operations are on a scale unique even by the standards of modern mega-mining. While the spectacular open pit dominates the landscape, one of the world’s largest underground mining operations is also part of the Grasberg complex. Production from the underground ore bodies, which are beneath and adjacent to the Grasberg open pit, are expected to ramp up over several years to around 240,000 tonnes a day. STRATEGIC STRATEGIC INSIGHTS The next big grey thing – choosing Australia’s future frigate 131 Andrew Davies, Michael Shoebridge and James Mugg Introduction The SEA 5000 Future Frigate program has three separate broad objectives. The first is to replace the Anzac-class frigates from the mid-2020s, providing the RAN with a new class of warship with the desired capabilities. The second is industrial: faced with a steady loss of shipyard jobs over the past few years, the Australian Government wants work at the ASC Shipyard in South Australia to begin early in the 2020s. The third objective is to set up a continuous shipbuilding program that will continue to deliver locally built vessels in perpetuity, with an eye to being able to export systems, components or perhaps even warships in the future. There’s a tension between the first two objectives. The selection of a hull design hasn’t yet been made, although a decision is due in the near future. But it won’t be a matter of getting straight to work on the build—or at least it shouldn’t be. And that includes the production engineering (or ‘productionising’, if we must)—the translation of a design into shipyard practices and processes, which is a complex discipline in its own right. -

From 2015 to 2017 he completed a PhD at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Research and Security at the University of Wollongong. The title of his thesis was “Fatal Ferry Accidents, Their Causes and Prevention”. This work arose from a more than thirty-year study of passenger vessel accidents and extensive published writing on that subject of which he is widely known as one of the world’s leading experts.. Arising from his doctoral research, Dr Baird has completed several projects with INTERFERRY (www.interferry.org) , the international trade association of ferry owners, mainly through its associated FerrySafe project. He has presented to and worked with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international bodies such as the China Maritime Safety Administration. At a Pacific Islands Forum/IMO conference in Port Moresby in April 2018 he developed the Pacific Safe Ferry Project idea. It was discussed there with all delegates, who unanimously liked the idea. The New Zealand delegates took the idea back to their government, which has already acted on it, see article on Te Kaniva attached. -
