Ellen Watts September 17, 2018. 2 Abstract The ability of celebrities to become influential political actors is evident (Marsh et al., 2010; Street 2004; 2012, West and Orman, 2003; Wheeler, 2013); the process enabling this is not. While Driessens’ (2013) concept of celebrity capital provides a starting point, it remains unclear how celebrity capital is exchanged for political capital. Returning to Street’s (2004) argument that celebrities claim to speak for others provides an opportunity to address this. In this thesis I argue successful exchange is contingent on acceptance of such claims, and contribute an original model for understanding this process. I explore the implicit interconnections between Saward’s (2010) theory of representative claims, and Bourdieu’s (1991) work on political capital and the political field. On this basis, I argue celebrity capital has greater explanatory power in political contexts when fused with Saward’s theory of representative claims. Three qualitative case studies provide demonstrations of this process at work. Contributing to work on how celebrities are evaluated within political and cultural hierarchies (Inthorn and Street, 2011; Marshall, 2014; Mendick et al., 2018; Ribke, 2015; Skeggs and Wood, 2011), I ask which key factors influence this process. -

UK Shared Business Services Ltd Business Plan 2018-21 Introduction For the last three years UK SBS has been working to single year business plans, following a decision taken by owners in 2015 that would have seen the transfer of services to other providers and the closure of the company. I am therefore delighted to be writing the introduction to a business plan that takes us beyond the planned closure date and without any more reference to closure. After two years of uncertainty, in July 2017, our owners made the decision to continue to share services through UK SBS and jointly invest in a new system solution for implementation in 2020-21. The fact that UK SBS was re-considered as a credible option was only possible because of the hard work and dedication of our people that turned the company around; the last three years have seen performance move from 40% of targets met to consistently meeting over 95%, alongside a reduction in our cost base of around 40%. Despite these significant improvements we are not complacent and recognise that there is more to do, but our people have proved that what they do and the way they do it can influence decisions and their future, and this is a powerful message to take forward in an ever uncertain world. The creation of BEIS and UKRI mean that we will have two strong owners and an opportunity to better enable joint control with a healthy degree of challenge for all of us. Both owners face their own considerable change over the next few years – change we will be happy and proud to support and enable. -

Long,1 and Hamish Reid2 | 1Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL, Holmbury St Mary, Dorking, Surrey, RH5 6NT, UK 2SUPA School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, G12 8QQ, UK ABSTRACT Stealth coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are eruptions from the Sun that have no obvious low coro- nal signature. These CMEs are characteristically slower events, but can still be geoeffective and affect space weather at Earth. Therefore, understanding the science underpinning these eruptions will greatly improve our ability to detect and, eventually, forecast them. We present a study of two stealth CMEs analysed using advanced image processing techniques that reveal their faint signatures in observations from the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imagers onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) space- craft. The different viewpoints given by these spacecraft provide the opportunity to study each eruption from above and the side contemporaneously. For each event, EUV and magnetogram observations were combined to reveal the coronal structure that erupted. For one event, the observations indicate the presence of a magnetic flux rope before the CME's fast rise phase. We found that both events orig- inated in active regions and are likely to be sympathetic CMEs triggered by a nearby eruption. We discuss the physical processes that occurred in the time leading up to the onset of each stealth CME and conclude that these eruptions are part of the low-energy and velocity tail of a distribution of CME events, and are not a distinct phenomenon. -
