Fall 2013 The ProjectA Publication of The Miami Project To Cure Paralysis & The Buoniconti Fund To Cure Paralysis Schwann cell clinical trial Co-Principal Investigators Dr. James Guest and Dr. Allan Levi A Message from the President Marc Buoniconti n behalf of the Board of Directors of The Buoniconti Fund, I am extremely proud of Oour progress throughout 2013. Specifically, in the Schwann Cell Safety Trial, I am delighted to announce that Miami Project scientists have injected autologous Schwann Cells in two subjects with acute (recent) spinal cord injuries. Those subjects are reacting well to the transplant and have not demonstrated any adverse reactions. As we increase the number of subjects, we will be increasing the dose of Schwann cells in order to discover the optimal therapeutic dose level. Additionally, we are confident that that we will begin our chronic (those paralyzed a year or more) trial in 2014. In the area of hypothermia, The Miami Project scientists continue to cool patients during the initial traumatic phase of the injury. The results have been dramatic with over 40% of the subjects converting to incomplete injuries. It is our hope that we can obtain the necessary funding to expand our trial nationwide so that everyone can take advantage of this remarkable breakthrough and life changing initiative. Marc Buoniconti, President In order to enhance the success of our Clinical Trials, offer the best after surgery patient The Buoniconti Fund care, and deliver on the promise my father made to me that we will never quit until a The Miami Project cure is found, it gives me the greatest pleasure to announce the building of our new rehabilitation center named The Christine E.

MarT^o SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION PRESS City of Washington 1976 Abstract Marzio, Peter C. The Art Crusade: An Analysis of American Drawing Manuals, 1820-1860. Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology, number 34, 94 pages, 47 figures, 1976.—Between 1820 and 1860 approximately 145 popular drawing manuals were published in the United States. Authored by painters, printers, and educators the drawing books were aimed at the general public. Based on the democratic ideal that "anyone who can learn to write can learn to draw," the manuals followed a highly structured system of drawing based on the theory that lines were the essence of form. The aesthetic system of Sir Joshua Reynolds often served as the principal artistic guideline, while the pedagogy of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi was used as a tool for making "drawing" part of a general approach to education. Although the American drawing books are often seen as part of the general social effort to democratize art, their appeal went beyond art students to engineers, scientists, and illustrators. Drawing was considered a general skill, such as writing, which could be applied to numerous aspects of life.

PRAIRIE FIRES: URBAN REBELLIONS AS BLACK WORKING CLASS POLITICS IN THREE MIDWESTERN CITIES BY ASHLEY M. HOWARD DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Sundiata K. Cha-Jua, Chair Professor James R. Barrett Professor Cheryl Greenberg, Trinity College Associate Professor Clarence Lang, University of Kansas ii ABSTRACT This study investigates the social, economic and political upheavals caused by the urban rebellions of the 1960s. Using Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Omaha, Nebraska as case studies, this dissertation argues that the uprisings were historically informed acts of resistance, which demonstrated a Midwestern, gendered, and working-class character. Prairie Fires registers the significant impact the rebellions had not only in transforming the consciousness of African Americans but also in altering the relationship between Blacks, urban communities, and the State as well as highlighting class fractures within Black politics. This interpretative lens validates the black urban rebellions not only as legitimate responses to oppression, but part of an American tradition of working class insurrection. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank my parents, Hilary and Jeanne Howard. They have always encouraged me to seek knowledge and change the world, for that I am forever indebted. I also thank my sister Gianna, whose frequent phone calls about pop culture, social issues, and what she had for lunch, jolted me from the tedium I often became mired in. My partner Christopher, has contributed incredible insight and supported me in every possible way through this process.

  • Actors Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland of the Critically Acclaimed NBC
Actors Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland of the critically acclaimed NBC television series "Friday Night Lights" are pleased to announce that they will be hosting the Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Classic on Friday, March 7th, 2008, at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa's Wolfdancer Golf Club. The catalyst for creating this annual tournament comes directly from their work on the television show. In the first episode, which was inspired by actual on-field events, high school football Coach Eric Taylor and his team, family, and community, witness a tragic football accident - the life- altering spinal cord injury suffered by his star quarterback. Chandler and Leland learned about those living with paralysis through personal research, their characters' on-screen development, and by getting to know and work with actors with real-life spinal cord injuries on the show. The strength, courage and determination of those young actors and others who live with paralysis deeply moved and inspired them into action. Their first annual Golf Classic hopes to create greater public awareness of those affected by spinal cord injuries and support those that focus on care, research and finding a cure for paralysis. The Gridiron Heroes Spinal Cord Injury Foundation and The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis/The Miami Project are the two charities that will benefit from the 2008 inaugural event. With your help, the "Friday Night Lights" stars hope that the Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Classic will become an important annual fundraising event for these charities. Finally, in keeping with the inspiration of the natural beauty of Lost Pines, this Tournament will be produced using sustainable or "green" practices and endeavors to be a carbon neutral event.
