Fr Tim Long O.M.I. and Fr Denis McCarthy O.M.I. arrived at the 32 acre Lindum property on 1 October 1957, and the College opened its doors on Tuesday 28 January 1958 with an enrolment of 58 students. The name “Iona” was chosen in recognition of the Isle of Iona off the west coast of Scotland. Iona is located in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Lindum and caters for nearly 1,600 students from Years 5 to 12 inclusive. IONA’S CONNECTION TO THE CONFRATERNITY CARNIVAL Iona participated in the Confraternity Carnival in 1980, 1981, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Our best result was winning the Plate Division in 2018. Our participation in the Confraternity Carnival has become a means to connect with other Rugby League schools and bind with the communities they represent. In 2021, Iona is privileged to be hosting the Queensland Confraternity Carnival, and bringing the largest school in the Bayside back into rugby league and encouraging the Carnival’s growth. PLAYING FIELDS Iona provides six First Grade standard playing fields and matching amenities on campus, and as such, we have the capacity to ensure that the thousands of visiting players, coaches, managers and spectators will experience that which our entire Iona community has built up over the decades of our existence.
