Thursday Mass Thursday 26 July – Ms Dyer's Year12 SOR Class Mass is celebrated in the College Chapel at 10.40 am each Thursday. ALL WELCOME This year's Naidoc theme is 'Because of her, we can!'. As this was my first Naidoc Liturgy I wanted to make sure it reflected the powerful message 'Because of her, we can!' and I am pleased to say that feedback I received from staff and students was that the Liturgy reflected this.

As pillars of our society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels. They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters. Their achievements, their voice, their unwavering passion give us strength and have empowered past generations and paved the way for generations to come.

I would also like to say a special “Thank You” to students, Enid Keppel and Lyncoln Rebel, who took on the daunting task of reading in front of the school along with myself and the student leaders. These students did such an amazing job and should be very proud of themselves.

NAIDOC WEEK MASS IN This week I had the privilege of attending NAIDOC Mass in Rockhampton with students from Chanel College. This was the first time in several years that Chanel has attended this Mass and it was a privilege to have Miss Leesa Jeffcoat - Diocesan Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Rockhampton, personally acknowledge Chanel College and present our College with a gift in recognition of this year's NAIDOC theme 'Because of her, we can!'. Special thanks to students, Enid Keppel and Jossie Law, for accepting the gift on behalf of Chanel College.

A sincere “Thank You” to students Jack Fallon, Jossie Law, Enid Keppel, Gypsy Thorn and Jaylin Law for representing our College and displaying exemplary behaviour whilst attending NAIDOC Mass. “Thank You” also toKate Mrs Foat Dina Hasaneen for accompanyingInclusive Curriculum myself andTeacher these Assistant students. Did you know? The term “Black Dog” was coined by Winston Churchill who used it to describe his own depression. His famous salute, as depicted by the BDI logo, represents a victory sign that casts a shadow of a black dog, a metaphor for a disorder that 'shadows' a person even when his or her mood is upbeat and 'victorious'. Ultimately, the logo promotes the notion that the positive is more powerful than the negative.

In the last week of Term 2, Chanel welcomed Dale from the Black Dog Institute who presented to our junior and senior students on the importance of being aware and looking after our mental health and wellbeing. Dale spoke about the signs and symptoms of mental illness, how to seek help and support friends. Improving mental fitness was alsoakeyfocusofthe presentations where students were encouraged to continue developing coping strategies and building resilience. Thank you to Dale and the Black Dog Institute for your time and dedication to supporting mental wellness. For further tips on improving your mental fitness, check out the online Bite Back Mental Fitness Challenge. Kingfisher Bay Resort Experience Recently Year 12 Certificate II in Tourism, Hospitality, and Business students participated in a work placement experience at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island. Over three days, the students worked alongside staff at the Resort in a variety of positions. These included, kitchen, food and beverage service, reception, housekeeping, porters, and the rangers. All of these offered an insight into working at a resort, and the students learned many new skills. The students also saw many of the behind-the-scenes operations involved in managing a resort in an off-shore location. They were all treated to meals prepared by international chefs, and worked with staff who are from all over the world, including Nepal, Argentina, and The Netherlands. Ms Going and Ms Di Bartolo thank and acknowledge the students for their behaviour, attitude, and application to their jobs while at the resort. Chanel College WINS the Physics of Flight Competition! On Wednesday 27 June, Chanel College hosted the fourth annual paper plane throwing competition which was again sponsored in part, by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA). As part of the Physics Unit studied by Year 7 students at the College during Term 2, students in the Year 7 classes had an opportunity to design, modify and then experiment with their paper airplanes and experience all the different forces at work. Representatives from each class were then chosen to be part of the Chanel Teamand then practised every Friday for eight weeks with the main objective being for their design to stay in the air for as long as possible.

Other Year 6 students from St John's, Star of the Sea and St Francis schools, were also invited to come and show their powers and prowess in the Physics of Flight. They too had also practised and perfected their designs not to mention their costume design which they wore on the day. St Francis also won the, “Most Vocal Team”,while other awards included, the longest flight time (9.00 seconds), most imaginative design and after two hours of intense rivalry, the Chanel team had the greatest cumulative time spent in the air followed by St John's. A huge word of thanks goes to the Science teachers from the other schools who prepared and enthused their teams. Well done to the Chanel team! Week 11 in Term 2 saw the Year 8's participate in the College's Wellbeing, Health and Mindfulness Day (WHAM!). The students participate in this day as a part of the Pastoral Care Program that is presented at the College. They were lucky enough to participate in a Laughter Workshop presented by Sue-Ellen Pashley and a Mindful Eating Workshop presented by Dietician, Meagan Leane. The students reflected on their strengths and completed some creative therapies on that reflection. The day concluded with a Life Books Session where members of the Chanel and Gladstone Community spent time with our students in small groups to talk about resilience, positive choices and how to bounce back from hard times and be successful.

Spinning Yarn with Year 9 History The Textile Industry was changed significantly during the Industrial Revolution in Europe during the 18th and 19 th Centuries. To highlight the move from cottage industry to factories, Ms Going demonstrated the traditional craft of spinning. Year 9 History students had an opportunity to try their hand at spinning on a modern spinning wheel. The students were able to make the link between a home based industry making one fibre at a time to the revolution of the Spinning Jenny making multiple threads at time in a factory setting.

ICAS Mathematics is an International Competition where the students answer questions under examination like conditions. On Thursday 19 July, the Year 11 & 12 Certificate II in Tourism students worked as Cruise Ambassadors with the arrival of the Pacific Eden into Gladstone. The students had undergone training provided by GAPDL earlier this year, and this was their first opportunity to put it into practice. The cruise started in Sydney, and Gladstone was the second stop, so the passengers were keen to disembark and explore East Shores and the Gladstone region. The students were on hand to assist, take photos, and provide information and directions. WE ARE BACK

What better way to end the term and the Semester, than two jam-packed days of athletics. We were blessed with beautiful weather, which made for ideal conditions for students to compete. Attendance was at an all-time high and participation in all track and field (especially on the track) events was the best it has been for many many years. This made for a very competitive and close carnival – would a new House be crowned Champions, or would Futuna continue to dominate Interhouse sport?

Day 1 saw records tumble both on and off the track. Students were pushing themselves to the limits and it showed in their results. Congratulations to the students below who broke records and have set new standards for students next year to aim to beat. It was a sea of colour out on the oval – all students proudly wearing the green, blue, purple, red and yellow house shirts and encouraging all in their House to get in and give everything a go. The staff were keen to get the Carnival underway and this rubbed off on the students, as they were eager and excited to get on with and compete in the events. The 100m event is definetly the ‘big ticket’ event of Day 1, and it lived up to all expectations. Luckily we film the end of the races, because it was needed in almost every 100m race, with some student literally falling over the line to try and get every ounce of energy out of themselves to take out the race. Those with the fastest times in all age groups were crowned 100m winners, no heats, just straight finals and this adds to the intense and close races we get. The top 10 fastest runners in each age group earn themselves a spot in the Chanel Gift race. A handicap race, with the fastest runner (this year was Ronan McGuire) starting at the 110m mark and the other nine runners being placed mathematically ahead of Ronan. Times were very close so the stagger this year was not very great. Sophie Duff was the Gift winner from last year, and she was out to make it two in a row. The race was fast and very very close – with the result again coming down to a photo finish. Ronan and Jett Cavanagh almost mowed down the runners ahead, proving no head start will ever be enough for these two boys!! Congratulations to Sophie on making it two Chanel Gift wins in a row. The overall points were extremely close at the end of Day 1 with Marcellin House just behind Futuna.

Day 2 is dress up and House theme day. This year, however, I would have to say it was the staff, in particular the MacKillop House staff, who took the prize for best dressed, or should that be worst dressed!! Another beautiful day greeted the students, with only two track events and three field events to go. More records were broken and again participation in all events was tremendous. Today it was the high jump event that had the crowds captivated – watching both the boys and the girls leap over the bar which was set at some pretty lofty heights. All students look forward to the relay events which end the Carnival and again, these races would end up deciding the Champion House for the Carnival. Every house entered a team in every relay, again showcasing the fabulous House spirit. We saw some flawless baton changes, some not so controlled change overs, some unusual running styles and some falls and drops. This all added to the competitive races and the massive noise that could be heard from the start to the end of the races. The relays truly end the Carnival on a high and sorted out the finishing order for House Champions.

My favourite part of the Athletics carnival is watching ALL students go to their age group event and support each other. It is a Chanel tradition and one not seen in many places-all students in every age group go to the event, and whether competing or assisting the teachers, all the students are there to support each other. This defines a school and this defines the true House and College spirit at Chanel.

Congratulations to all Age Champion students. You all pushed yourself to the limits over the two days and produced some outstanding and exciting results. You represented yourselves with pride and led from the front. For their teamwork, dress-up, sun safety, war cries, participation and help over the two days of the Carnival, MacKillop House were awarded the House Spirit award. Congratulations to all MacKillop House students and staff on your outstanding Spirit at the Athletics Carnival. Results were tight all throughout the Carnival, but it came down to sheer numbers in events and the relays. Congratulations to Futuna House on being crowned 2018 Interhouse Athletics Champion House. They have produced another 3-peat of the Interhouse Carnivals and now remain unbeaten for four years. It is a credit to your willingness to get in a give it a go and participate in any event you can. Congratulations Futuna House students and staff.

I would like to thank all staff for their assistance in running events, setting up and ensuring the Carnival ran smoothly. It is great to hear students comment that the staff on the events were encouraging them and giving tips. Special mention to the HPE staff for their tireless work in the lead-up to the event. They are a great team and Chanel is lucky to have such great HPE staff. It was great to see so many parents come to the carnival and support their children and all students. Thank you parents for your support.

This brings a close to the 2018 Interhouse Carnivals. Bring on 2019 and the challenge is once again set – who will finally break Futuna’s dominance of the Interhouse Carnivals. Results 2018 Athletics Carnival Overall Championship
