Shakespeare's Stage in America: The ABSTRACT Title of Document: SHAKESPEARE’S STAGE IN AMERICA: THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE FOLGER ELIZABETHAN THEATRE Elizabeth Forte Alman, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Franklin J. Hildy, School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies The Folger Shakespeare Library, a private research institution located in Washington, D.C., was founded by Henry and Emily Folger in 1932. The Folgers intended their memorial to William Shakespeare, a complex that includes a library, an exhibition hall and an Elizabethan-styled theatre, to promote research and the communication of that research to the citizenry. This study suggests the Folgers, influenced by the Elizabethan Revival movement, envisioned the Folger Elizabethan Theatre to be utilized as an important tool to extend the research function of the institution, a laboratory, of sorts, to further the type of performance research that William Poel, Nugent Monk, Harley Granville Barker, B. Iden Payne, and Ben Greet conducted in early modern production practices. Interestingly, however, performance research was not included as one of the Library’s activities at its founding. The author identifies and examines a number of myths of origin about Henry and Emily Folger, the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Folger Elizabethan Theatre, suggesting their promotion by Library officials and others has helped to obscure the Founders’ original intent for the Folger Elizabethan Theatre. Drawing on archival research this study attempts to re-contextualize the early history of the Folger Elizabethan Theatre with that of the Folger Shakespeare Library. B. Hardison Jr. (1928-1990), Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library from 1969 to 1984, considered the founding of the Folger Theatre Group in 1970 at the Folger Elizabethan Theatre as the private research institution’s singularly most important public program.1 The Library’s founders, Henry and Emily Folger (who bequeathed the Library to be administered by the Trustees of Amherst College, Henry Folger’s alma mater), included the Elizabethan-styled theatre in their Library project located in Washington, D.C. for the study of Shakespeare in performance.2 This theatrical activity was meant to complement the studying of Shakespeare as a literary and historical topic by advanced scholars in the Library’s Gail Kern Paster Reading Room.3 Shakespearean scholar W. B. Worthen helps to illuminate the difference between (and, for Worthen, the benefits of) considering Shakespeare from a performance perspective – versus solely a literary one in his 1997 Shakespeare and the Authority of Performance: In a schematic sense, a literary perspective takes the authority of a performance to be a function of how fully the stage expresses meanings, gestures, and themes located ineffably in the written work, the source of the performance and the measure of its success. Though performance may discover nuance and meaning not immediately available through reading or criticism, these meanings are nonetheless 1 Jed I Bergman with William G. Bowen and Thomas I.     Early Theatre 9.2 Issues in Review Lucy Munro, Anne Lancashire, John Astington, and Marta Straznicky Popular Theatre and the Red Bull Governing the Pen to the Capacity of the Stage: Reading the Red Bull and Clerkenwell In his introduction to Early Theatre’s Issues in Review segment ‘Reading the Elizabethan Acting Companies’, published in 2001, Scott McMillin called for an approach to the study of early modern drama which takes theatre companies as ‘the organizing units of dramatic production’. Such an approach will, he suggests, entail reading plays ‘more fully than we have been trained to do, taking them not as authorial texts but as performed texts, seeing them as collaborative endeavours which involve the writers and dozens of other theatre people, and placing the staged plays in a social network to which both the players and audiences – perhaps even the playwrights – belonged’.1 We present here a variation on this approach: three essays that focus on the Red Bull theatre and its Clerkenwell locality. Rather than focusing on individual companies, we take the playhouse and location as our organising principle. Nonetheless, we are dealing with precisely the kind of decentring activity that McMillin had in mind, examining early drama through collaborative performance, through performance styles and audience taste, and through the presentation of a theatrical repertory in print. Each essay deals with a different ‘social network’: Anne Lancashire re-examines the evidence for the London Clerkenwell play, a multi-day biblical play performed by clerks in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries; John Astington takes a look at acting traditions and repertory composition at the Red Bull and its fellow in the northern suburbs, Golden Lane’s Fortune playhouse; and Marta Straznicky looks at questions relating to the audience for Red Bull plays in the playhouse and the print-shop.

Membership Chair Martha Shivvers has assured us that, even though a stroke just two weeks after her 95th birthday threatened to limit drastically her activities, she has recovered sufficiently to be able to continue her unmatched service to The Fossils. We rejoice, not only because she would have been most difficult to replace, but more importantly, because she has made such marvelous recovery. I am certain that all of you are elated to receive this news. Another happy event was mine this February when at the behest of former student and long- time friend, Ken Metzgar, I ventured a visit to his home in Tempe, Arizona. Ken made certain that I was in Tucson on February 12 to celebrate with Louise Lincoln her 98th birthday. You will want to know that Louise is comfortable and happy with the care she receives in a beautiful assisted living residence. As a matter of fact her care givers invited Ken and me to share the occasion with a generous slice of Louise's red-ribbon birthday cake. At present Louise is working on another issue of her Kitchen Stove which she produces for members of NAPA. Also Ken arranged for me to visit with AAPA President Mike O'Connor in Fountain Hills where I was Mike's luncheon guest and later had the opportunity of examining his print shop and conversing face-to-face with Dean Rea by way of the internet.
