  • Phd Thesis Noel Brown
1 Hollywood, the family audience and the family film, 1930-2010 Noel Brown Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University. June 2010 2 Abstract This thesis is the first in-depth, historical study of Hollywood’s relationship with the ‘family audience’ and ‘family film’. Since the 1970s, Hollywood family films have been the most lucrative screen entertainments in the world, and despite their relatively- unexplored status in academic film criticism and history, I will argue that the format is centrally important in understanding mainstream Hollywood cinema. How have ‘family films’ become so globally dominant? One answer is that Hollywood’s international power facilitates the global proliferation of its products, but this explanation, in isolation, is insufficient. I will argue that Hollywood family films are designed to transcend normative barriers of age, gender, race, culture and even taste; they target the widest possible audiences to maximise commercial returns, trying to please as many people, and offend as few, as possible. This they achieve through a combination of ideological populism, emotional stimulation, impressive spectacle, and the calculated minimisation of potentially objectionable elements, such as sex, violence, and excessive socio-cultural specificity. Initially, the audience for family films was predominantly domestic, but with the increasing spending power of international audiences, family films are now formulated on the belief that no market is inaccessible. For this reason, they are inextricably linked with Hollywood – the only film industry in the world with the resources and distribution capacity to address a truly global mass audience.

  • Diversifying the Children in Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate
Diversifying the children in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: From Page to Screen by Adrian Schober The plot details of Roald Dahl’s most celebrated children’s tale scarcely need reminding: poor boy Charlie Bucket wins a coveted golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s world-famous chocolate factory. He is accompanied by four other children: Augustus Gloop from West Germany, Veruca Salt from England, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee, both from the US. Each of the children is approached by one of Wonka’s competitors, Slugworth, to smuggle a gobstopper out of the factory. But, one by one, the undeserving brats meets with a sticky end, until Charlie is the only one left standing. Wonka tells him he has forfeited his prize (a lifetime supply of chocolate) because he and Grandpa stole fizzy lifting drinks, which means that this part of the factory will need to be washed and sterilised. By returning the gobstopper which Slugworth so desires, however, Charlie proves himself an honest child to Wonka and therefore fit to inherit his factory and be entrusted with his candy-making secrets. Slugworth turns out to be Wonka’s confederate, and Charlie and his family live happily ever after. Of course, I’m not playing fair. Like L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) is a classic example of a text whose recollection of it has been “contaminated” by the movie. I am referring to the 1971 adaptation, by far “the most influential and famous” of the two movies made of Dahl’s book (Mangan 41).

EXPLORING THE FACTORY: ANALYZING THE FILM ADAPTATIONS OF ROALD DAHL’S CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by RICHARD B. DAVIS Under the Direction of Pearl McHaney ABSTRACT Film adaptations are becoming more popular and past critics and scholars have discussed films based on dramas and novels. However, few have explored the children’s literature genre. In discussing such a topic, it takes more than just debating whether the novel or book is better. A discussion on what elements have been maintained, removed, or added in such an adaptation has to be made along with its success or failure. With this in mind, Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its two film adaptations will be explored along with an analysis of film adaptation theory to show that the first version of the novel succeeds and the second one fails.
