Processing Information The collection was processed by Stefanie Crump in 2006. In processing this collection, an attempt was made to preserve the contextual structure of Schaelchlin's research. Materials where transferred from their original binders into folders, and the original chronological order was maintained. A few items were merged with other folders based on content and relevance. Duplication of materials may occur between two or more subseries, for instance, a document written by J.C. Harper, legal advisor for both Ellen Browning Scripps and Edward Willis (E.W.) Scripps may be present in all three of their files. Biography / Administrative History Patricia Ann McKeown Schaelchlin was born in Flint, Michigan on July 7, 1924. Through her writings and work with the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), the La Jolla Historical Society, the San Diego Historic Site Board, and Friends of the La Jolla Library, Schaelchlin helped preserve the cultural and architectural history of La Jolla and San Diego. Schaelchlin moved from Michigan to San Diego in 1959. After having 3 children, Mrs. Schaelchlin decided to go back to school, enrolling at San Diego State University where she attained both bachelors and masters degrees in anthropology. By the early 1970s she had become a member of the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), with whom she would help create Heritage Park (a San Diego County landmark). Preserving the history of the community she loved became her passion. She successfully convinced the Port Commission to make the San Diego Rowing Club a city landmark. As a writer, Schaechlin contributed articles to the former La Jolla Report and wrote a monthly column on San Diego history in, San Diego Home/Garden. It is Schaelchlin's passion for history, and for her adopted home town, that led her to write about La Jolla and its famous inhabitants. Her master's thesis was an interpretation of famous La Jollan, Anson Peaslee Mill's diary. Her work with historical societies and similar organizations led her to write published works about historical landmarks like the San Diego Rowing Club. Schaelchlin spent fifteen years researching Ellen Browning Scripps and her life in La Jolla, and decided around 1990 to extend that research to the rest of the family beginning with James Mogg Scripps. Schaelchlin's well researched writings are labors of love that provide detailed insight not only into the history of San Diego/ La Jolla, but into the lives that helped shape the American cultural landscape. Along with Newspaper barons: a biography of the Scripps family (Kales Press, 2003), Schaelchlin wrote, The little clubhouse on Steamship Wharf: San Diego Rowing Club, 1888-1983 (Rand Editions, 1984), and La Jolla: the story of a community, 1887-1987 (Rand Editions, 1988). Scope and Content of Collection The Patricia A. Schaelchlin Collection contains materials related to Schaelchlin's original work entitled, Newspaper Barons: a Biography of the Scripps Family. This biography places particular emphasis on three Scripps family members --Edward Willis (E.W.), Ellen Browning, and James Edmund Scripps-- and the collected materials reflect this emphasis. The bulk of the collection consists of the author's notes regarding biographic materials, and photocopies of those original documents. Materials researched for Schaelchlin's work include previously published biographies and genealogies by others, legal documents, Scripps family correspondence, and newspaper articles. The collection covers the years 1791 to 2003 with the bulk of the material ranging from 1838 to 2001. The first series, "Research Materials," contains the author's research notes interspersed with corresponding reproductions of primary and secondary sources (newspaper clippings, court documents, personal and business correspondence) related to the Scripps family, their personal and business interests. The author arranged her research into three main components: index cards organized by subject, binders organized both by subject and year, and binders arranged chronologically. Duplicate research notes may be found in all three areas, some containing highlighting and/or handwritten notes not found on other copies. Miscellaneous primary and secondary materials have been placed in the Topical Files subseries. This includes general notes and information gathered by Schaelchlin that provide background information on a time period or event, but that do not fit easily with any one subseries.

Guide to the Patricia A. D2006.1 3 Schaelchlin/ Scripps Family Research Collection The second series, "Drafts for Publication" contains materials created and attained during the process of writing and publishing her work. These materials include partial drafts of individual chapters and three complete manuscripts sent to Ellen Revelle, Peter Jensen, and Warren Wilkinson (all of whom critiqued her work). These materials also contain additional notes by Schaelchlin. In addition, several folders are dedicated to correspondence between the author and others regarding the production and publication of her book, permission for photos, requests for research materials and information on particular individuals in or associated with the Scripps family. Photos used and/or considered for the book also comprise a sizable amount of material. Note to the researcher: Schaelchlin often made a shorthand notation of the institution from which she acquired her sources on the bottom left-hand corner of the photocopied item, and in the "source" field on her typed notes. Guide to the Patricia A. D2006.1 4 Schaelchlin/ Scripps Family Research Collection San Diego (Calif.) History Schaelchlin, Patricia A. Scripps, E.W. (Edward Willis), 1854-1926 Scripps, Ellen Browning, 1836-1932 Scripps, James E. (James Edmund), 1835-1906 Scripps family

Series 1. Research Materials 1791-2001 Scope and Content Note This series is comprised of research notes and materials compiled by Schaelchlin for the purpose of creating a published work on the Scripps family. It begins with chronologically arranged materials comprised solely of the author’s research notes. Most notes contain quotes from researched sources placed into context by the author. Other notes provide information on specific materials and source locations (where to retrieve more information, what other resources should be investigated, etc.). These files are followed by chronologies produced by Schaelchlin (with dates ranging from 1619 to 1992), briefly recording Scripps family births, deaths, marriages, inheritances, occupations, and business dealings, as well as more generalized research materials including the author’s “to do” lists, checked sources, questions to self regarding her findings, etc. These materials in particular shed light on Schaelchlin’s biographical perspective. The series is arranged chronologically and by subject.

Subseries 1.1. E.W. Scripps 1844-1999 Scope and Content Note This subseries contains biographical information on E.W. (Edward Willis) Scripps, including source materials found in the Vance H. Trimble Collection of research materials on E.W. Scripps. Materials from 1873-1889 are comprised of the Schaelchlin’s notes together with photocopies of source materials— mostly of letters to E.W.’s sister, Julia Anne “Annie” Scripps. These items recount his travels, health concerns, his feelings on becoming a reporter, his business abilities, and his desire to find a wife. Later correspondence is comprised of letters between family and associates that offer an account of Scripps’s marriage to Nackie Holtsinger, their children and his in-laws, his growing empire, and the disagreements with his brother James that led to a permanent rift by 1891. The subseries also contains several files of business related correspondence.

Subseries 1.3. Frederick T. Scripps 1860-1960 Scope and Content Note This subseries contains materials on Frederick T. Scripps with a significant amount of materials on court cases in which Frederick was involved. Of particular interest is the information obtained on the Benoit case of 1892 in which Frederick Scripps was peripherally involved (having been indicted separately for his alleged involvement with a minor). Included here are court documents (in which the only mention of Frederick Scripps is made in an 1891 court subpoena) and newspaper clippings outlining the accusations of Mary Benoit (age fourteen) against her parents and the implication of others involved, as well as correspondence between family members regarding Frederick’s involvement in the criminal case.

Subseries 1.5. James E. (Edmund) Scripps 1840-1998 Scope and Content Note This subseries contains information on James Edward Scripps, brother of E.W. and Ellen Scripps et al. A respected newspaper publisher in his own right, he began not as a journalist but a school teacher (though very little of this portion of his life is covered here). The bulk of this subseries concentrates on his founding of the Detroit News and his turbulent relationship with E.W. Scripps as evidenced in correspondence and probate documents regarding George H. Scripps. Schaelchlin biographical notes rely heavily on the diary entries of James E. Scripps as well as the research of Cyril Arthur Player. Diary entries from 1858-59 are not complete but written in his own hand. Information on newspapers begun by James Scripps have been retained in this subseries as originally intended by Schaelchlin. Other materials related to his newspaper career and contributions may be found in the Newspaper Business subseries.

Subseries 1.11. Family Litigation 1900-1950 Scope and Content Note The subseries contains photocopied court documents, newspaper clippings, and author’s notes regarding various legal battles between Scripps family members. The bulk of these materials involve the contestation of George H. Scripps’ will and are comprised of court documents, correspondence between family members and their lawyers, newspaper articles, and the author’s contextual notes. Of particular interest is the correspondence written between E.W. Scripps and his lawyer/agent J.C. Harper (also acting as agent for Ellen Browning Scripps) as they provide a detailed record of the legal battle from beginning to resolution, and capture its effect on family relationships. These folders make up the bulk of this subseries.
