    Chapter 4 Modeling regional variation in voice onset time of Jutlandic varieties of Danish Rasmus Puggaard Universiteit Leiden It is a well-known overt feature of the Northern Jutlandic variety of Danish that /t/ is pronounced with short voice onset time and no affrication. This is not lim- ited to Northern Jutland, but shows up across the peninsula. This paper expands on this research, using a large corpus to show that complex geographical pat- terns of variation in voice onset time is found in all fortis stops, but not in lenis stops. Modeling the data using generalized additive mixed modeling both allows us to explore these geographical patterns in detail, as well as test a number of hypotheses about how a number of environmental and social factors affect voice onset time. Keywords: Danish, Jutlandic, phonetics, microvariation, regional variation, stop realization, voice onset time, aspiration, generalized additive mixed modeling 1. Introduction A well-known feature of northern Jutlandic varieties of Danish is the use of a variant of /t/ known colloquially as the ‘dry t’. While the Standard Danish variant of /t/ has a highly affricated release, the ‘dry t’ does not. Puggaard (2018) showed that variation in this respect goes beyond just that particular phonetic feature and dialect area: the ‘dry t’ also has shorter voice onset time (VOT) than affricated variants, and a less affricated, shorter variant of /t/ is also found in the center of Jutland. This paper expands on Puggaard (2018) with the primary goals of providing a sounder basis for investigating the geographic spread of the variation, and to test whether the observed variation is limited to /t/ or reflects general patterns in plosive realization.

    ”The 13 ugly from Lolland ” That’s how the 13 siblings were known - or how they referred to themselves. The 13 are the 13 siblings and children of Anders Peder Hansen and Marie Annette Augusta Hansen from Torslunde on Lolland . Actually, they had 15 children, but one (Anton Emil Hansen) died at age 5 and another one (Georg Hansen) died just two hours after his birth. In 1958, Axel Marius Hansen writes "a plain schematic report of their life stories": Johannes Laurits Qvist Hansen (3/3 1858 – 5/11 1950) Johannes got an apprenticeship at a machine builder and blacksmith in the neighboring town Fuglse, and ended up as a blacksmith in Copenhagen at “Marstrand and Helveg” machine factory located on Vesterfælledvej. Here, he gradually grew to become foreman and stayed with the company when the factory moved to Tagensvej in Nørrebro and under the name "Titan" became a limited company that over time developed to a very large business. At “Titan”, Johannes became senior foreman and was for many years a highly esteemed manager until he retired at 72½ years old. He received a pension from "Titan" and lived until he was 92½ years old. Hans Christian Hansen (10/9 1859 – 3/10 1934) Christian was trained by cabinet maker Aaby Rodby, where he was well trained as a cabinet maker. He came as graduated cabinet maker to Copenhagen. Later he traveled to America, where he in Brooklyn over time made a good business as a carpenter. Over the years, he visited Denmark several times; he also tried to create a business in Denmark, but did not find conditions sufficiently well and traveled back to Brooklyn and reestablished a good business.

    The Cimbri of Denmark, the Norse and Danish Vikings, and Y-DNA Haplogroup R-S28/U152 - (Hypothesis A) David K. Faux The goal of the present work is to assemble widely scattered facts to accurately record the story of one of Europe’s most enigmatic people of the early historic era – the Cimbri. To meet this goal, the present study will trace the antecedents and descendants of the Cimbri, who reside or resided in the northern part of the Jutland Peninsula, in what is today known as the County of Himmerland, Denmark. It is likely that the name Cimbri came to represent the peoples of the Cimbric Peninsula and nearby islands, now called Jutland, Fyn and so on. Very early (3rd Century BC) Greek sources also make note of the Teutones, a tribe closely associated with the Cimbri, however their specific place of residence is not precisely located. It is not until the 1st Century AD that Roman commentators describe other tribes residing within this geographical area. At some point before 500 AD, there is no further mention of the Cimbri or Teutones in any source, and the Cimbric Cheronese (Peninsula) is then called Jutland. As we shall see, problems in accomplishing this task are somewhat daunting. For example, there are inconsistencies in datasources, and highly conflicting viewpoints expressed by those interpreting the data. These difficulties can be addressed by a careful sifting of diverse material that has come to light largely due to the storehouse of primary source information accessed by the power of the Internet. Historical, archaeological and genetic data will be integrated to lift the veil that has to date obscured the story of the Cimbri, or Cimbrian, peoples.
