  • The Birth and Growth of Ro
THE BIRTH AND GROWTH OF ROGER STEFFENS’ Reggae Archives Archives, story and photos by “Ras RoJah” Steffens Way back in the summer of 1973, an extraordinary and revealing article appeared in Rolling Stone by a gonzo journalist from Australia named Michael Thomas. Under the heading “The Wild Side of Paradise,” in vivid mad-cap prose, Thomas told a brief history of this new Jamaican music called “reggae,” and alerted American readers to its manifold mysteries and pleasures. I cut it out and put it in a manila folder -- and now, looking back -- I recognize it as the unwitting start of Roger Steffens’ Reggae Archives. I never set out to build a collection that would grow to fi ll six rooms of our home in Los Angeles, plus a basement storage space at a museum design fi rm in Pasadena, not to mention the dozens of cartons stored in our garage and bedroom closets. Need I say I am married to the world’s most patient wife? Without Mary’s active connivance, none of this would ever have happened, for she has taken virtually every step of the reggae trod at my side, meeting Bob Marley and Sunsplashing throughout the ‘80s and running tech for me in worldwide “Life of Bob Marley” multi-media presentations as far afi eld as the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Martinique and Guam, from Auckland to Alberta, Perth to Paris. I’ve always been a writer and a lecturer, two interests abetted by my training as an actor, so whenever a subject interests me, I begin to keep a fi le on it, in case someday I might like to write or speak about it.

Página 1 de 10 Revista Transcultural de Música Transcultural Music Review #11 (2007) ISSN:1697-0101 People and sounds”: Filming African music between visual anthropology and television documentary Leonardo D'Amico Università di Ferrara Università di Siena Abstract Watching music, and not only listening to or writing about it, is a priority to deepen in the knowledge of traditional music both in Europe and elsewhere. Since visual anthropology was born, there have been different ways to convey this idea. Through a review of the documentary films produced from the fifties until the present time, the paper shows the historical changes on the film industry priorities with regard to world music portrayals. The dialectal tension between fictional and ethnographic approaches has been a constant. This paper supports the premise that auteur films can reach ethnomusicological level, although not being scientific, and have an added poetical value of great help in this field.

Soweto, The s“ torybook Place”: Tourism And Feeling In A South African Township Abstract This dissertation deals with the role of tour guides in creating and telling the story of Soweto – a township southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The ts ory speaks of a place afflicted by poverty because of its history of segregation during apartheid but emerging out of these struggles to lead its nation in a post-apartheid culture. I argue that Soweto’s story was created out of a governmental mandate for the township to become one of Gauteng’s tourism locations, and out of a knowledge that the transformation story from apartheid to a ‘rainbow nation’ would not sell in this context. After being created, Soweto’s story was affirmed through urban branding strategies and distributed to tourism markets across the world. It is a storybook – a narrative with a beginning, a climax, and an ending; it is easily packaged, marketed and sold to individuals from across the world, and this is done through the senses and emotions.

  • Playback Singers of Bollywood and Hollywood
ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD By MYRNA JUNE LAYTON Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF LITERATURE AND PHILOSOPHY in the subject MUSICOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. SUPERVISOR: PROF. M. DUBY JANUARY 2013 Student number: 4202027-1 I declare that ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. SIGNATURE DATE (MRS M LAYTON) Preface I would like to thank the two supervisors who worked with me at UNISA, Marie Jorritsma who got me started on my reading and writing, and Marc Duby, who saw me through to the end. Marni Nixon was most helpful to me, willing to talk with me and discuss her experiences recording songs for Hollywood studios. It was much more difficult to locate people who work in the Bollywood film industry, but two people were helpful and willing to talk to me; Craig Pruess and Deepa Nair have been very gracious about corresponding with me via email. Lastly, putting the whole document together, which seemed an overwhelming chore, was made much easier because of the expert formatting and editing of my daughter Nancy Heiss, sometimes assisted by her husband Andrew Heiss. Joe Bonyata, a good friend who also happens to be an editor and publisher, did a final read-through to look for small details I might have missed, and of course, he found plenty. For this I am grateful.

  • Music in Chris Abani's Graceland
Riffing on Resistance: Music in Chris Abani’s Graceland Stefan Sereda I am black: I am the incarnation of a complete fusion with the world, an intuitive understanding of the earth, an abandonment of my ego in the heart of the cosmos, and no white man, no matter how intelligent he may be, can ever understand Louis Armstrong and the music of the Congo. (Fanon Black Skin, White Masks 45) That is what the road did—ate away at the edges of your resolve until you were nothing but frayed soul fabric. From then on there was only the music—and the sacrifices it demanded of you. (Abani Graceland 275) I. Introduction: Music is the Weapon of the Future While addressing the issue of cultural violence against African nations in The Wretched of the Earth, colonized subject-turned-First-World aca- demic Frantz Fanon argues that for the Black nationalist, it is not enough to get back to the people in that past out of which they have already emerged; rather we must join them in that fluctuating movement which they are just giving a shape to, and which, as soon as it has started, will be the signal for everything to be called into question. (227) Fanon advocates that African nationalists understand their respective nations’ preceding cultural and political activity to engage in current struggles against colonial oppression. Nigerian musician-turned-po- litical leader Fela Anikulapo Kuti extends Fanon’s argument with his statement, “music is the weapon of the future” (Music is the Weapon). The afrobeat revolutionary’s vision of Nigeria’s cultural prospects, and Fanon’s insistence on momentary action through a knowledge of the na- 31 Stefan Sereda tion’s artistic history, bear similarity to the ideas that author Chris Abani riffs on in his Hemingway/Pen Award-winning 2004 novel, Graceland.
