    THE BIRTH AND GROWTH OF ROGER STEFFENS’ Reggae Archives Archives, story and photos by “Ras RoJah” Steffens Way back in the summer of 1973, an extraordinary and revealing article appeared in Rolling Stone by a gonzo journalist from Australia named Michael Thomas. Under the heading “The Wild Side of Paradise,” in vivid mad-cap prose, Thomas told a brief history of this new Jamaican music called “reggae,” and alerted American readers to its manifold mysteries and pleasures. I cut it out and put it in a manila folder -- and now, looking back -- I recognize it as the unwitting start of Roger Steffens’ Reggae Archives. I never set out to build a collection that would grow to fi ll six rooms of our home in Los Angeles, plus a basement storage space at a museum design fi rm in Pasadena, not to mention the dozens of cartons stored in our garage and bedroom closets. Need I say I am married to the world’s most patient wife? Without Mary’s active connivance, none of this would ever have happened, for she has taken virtually every step of the reggae trod at my side, meeting Bob Marley and Sunsplashing throughout the ‘80s and running tech for me in worldwide “Life of Bob Marley” multi-media presentations as far afi eld as the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Martinique and Guam, from Auckland to Alberta, Perth to Paris. I’ve always been a writer and a lecturer, two interests abetted by my training as an actor, so whenever a subject interests me, I begin to keep a fi le on it, in case someday I might like to write or speak about it.

Since visual anthropology was born, there have been different ways to convey this idea. Through a review of the documentary films produced from the fifties until the present time, the paper shows the historical changes on the film industry priorities with regard to world music portrayals. The dialectal tension between fictional and ethnographic approaches has been a constant. This paper supports the premise that auteur films can reach ethnomusicological level, although not being scientific, and have an added poetical value of great help in this field.

Soweto, The s“ torybook Place”: Tourism And Feeling In A South African Township Abstract This dissertation deals with the role of tour guides in creating and telling the story of Soweto – a township southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The ts ory speaks of a place afflicted by poverty because of its history of segregation during apartheid but emerging out of these struggles to lead its nation in a post-apartheid culture. I argue that Soweto’s story was created out of a governmental mandate for the township to become one of Gauteng’s tourism locations, and out of a knowledge that the transformation story from apartheid to a ‘rainbow nation’ would not sell in this context. After being created, Soweto’s story was affirmed through urban branding strategies and distributed to tourism markets across the world. It is a storybook – a narrative with a beginning, a climax, and an ending; it is easily packaged, marketed and sold to individuals from across the world, and this is done through the senses and emotions.

Introduction: Music is the Weapon of the Future While addressing the issue of cultural violence against African nations in The Wretched of the Earth, colonized subject-turned-First-World aca- demic Frantz Fanon argues that for the Black nationalist, it is not enough to get back to the people in that past out of which they have already emerged; rather we must join them in that fluctuating movement which they are just giving a shape to, and which, as soon as it has started, will be the signal for everything to be called into question. (227) Fanon advocates that African nationalists understand their respective nations’ preceding cultural and political activity to engage in current struggles against colonial oppression. Nigerian musician-turned-po- litical leader Fela Anikulapo Kuti extends Fanon’s argument with his statement, “music is the weapon of the future” (Music is the Weapon). The guide encompasses a wide variety of items from the earliest days of cinema to the present, and focuses on films, TV programs and videos with China as the main subject. It also includes theatrical newsreels (e.g. Fox Movietone News) and TV news magazines (e.g. 60 Minutes) with distinct segments related to the subject. How to Use this Guide Titles are listed in chronological order by date of release or broadcast, and alphabetically within the same year. This enables users to follow the history of the region and for the most part groups together items dealing with the same historical event and/or period (e.g. Sino-Japanese conflict, World War II, Cold War, etc.).
