  • Ending Sexual Violence in One Generation
Ending Sexual Violence in One Generation A progress report for the United States Raliance is a collaborative initiative dedicated to ending sexual violence in one generation. Composed of three top sexual violence prevention organizations – the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA)- PreventConnect and the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV) – Raliance serves as the central hub for effective allocation and distribution of programmatic funding in sexual violence prevention and as the go-to resource for policymakers, advocates, service providers and the media. Raliance is funded through a $10 million multiyear commitment from the National Football League. The name was inspired by the entity’s intent to rally engagement from stakeholders and align goals and resources behind its overarching mission of putting a stop to sexual violence once and for all. Learn more at Raliance.org. Ending Sexual Violence in One Generation Executive summary This report analyzes progress in the movement to end sexual violence and how it is shaping public conversation and, ultimately, our culture in how we address this important societal issue. Although much work remains to be done, significant accomplishments have been made and additional positive changes are underway. Understanding this watershed moment and the potential to create real and lasting cultural change requires a nuanced discussion about many on-going contributing factors, including the following: • Media – including entertainment and news channels – help shape the national conversation about sexual violence. These platforms have the ability to tell more complete stories that enhance the public’s understanding of sexual violence and break down misconceptions and myths.

  • Women Singer-Songwriters As Exemplary Actors: the Music of Rape and Domestic Violence
Women Singer-Songwriters as Exemplary Actors: The Music of Rape and Domestic Violence KATHANNE W. GREENE At the 2016 Oscars, Lady Gaga, joined onstage by fifty rape survivors, performed the song “Til It Happens to You.” The Oscar-nominated song by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren was written for The Hunting Ground, a documentary film about campus sexual assault. Over thirty-one million people viewed the Oscar performance, which brought some in the audience to tears, and the video on Vevo has received over twenty-nine million views with another twenty-eight million views on YouTube. The film, video, and performance are the result of a growing political and social movement by young high school and college women to force schools, universities, and colleges to vigorously respond to rape and sexual harassment on campus. In response to complaints filed by more and more young women, the Obama Administration and the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in the Department Education began investigating claims that schools, colleges, and universities were not actively and adequately responding to claims of sexual assault and harassment despite passage of the Clery Act of 1990. The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to report data on crime on campus, provide support and accommodations to survivors, and establish written policies and procedures for the handling of campus crime.1 Since 2011, the OCR has expanded its efforts to address sexual assault on campuses as violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination

  • Lady Gaga Biography
Lady Gaga biography A.J. Smuskiewicz, for ABC-CLIO Lady Gaga is a singer, songwriter, performance artist, and actress. Since rising to pop music stardom in the early 2000s with her catchy dance songs—as well as her highly original persona and avant-garde, often outrageous outfits—she has expanded the scope of her career and explored various public images. She has also frequently used her fame to advocate for a number of social causes, including issues related to bullying, sexual as- sault, and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) rights. Early Life Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born on March 28, 1986, in New York City. Her father, Joseph, was an Internet entrepreneur, owning a company that installed Wi-Fi in hotels. Her mother, Cynthia, also worked in the telecommunications industry. She grew up in the generally affluent Upper West Side of Manhattan. Stefani began playing piano when 4 years old and studied classical music while attended a private all-girls Catholic elementary and high school called the Convent of the Sacred Heart. An aspect of Germanotta’s early life that she has frequently spoken about is always feel- ing “different,” “insecure,” “eccentric,” and “like a freak,” and, consequently, finding herself being bullied and ridiculed by peers. Peer rejection, she said, was a major reason that she sought refuge in art. At age 17, Germanotta started attending New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts, where she continued her music studies. However, she quit during her second year to pursue cabaret and rock singing, songwriting, performance art, and other artistic endeav- ors.

  • 2020 Reinstein Set – Packet 4 Tossups
2020 Reinstein Set – Packet 4 Tossups 1. One of the most famous jazz performers on this instrument bought his instrument the day after hearing Charlie Christian perform on it. That performer, whose songs include “Bumpin’ on Sunset” and “Four on Six”, was Wes Montgomery. He famously played this instrument with the side of his thumb. Another performer on this instrument, who composed the songs “Nuages” [noo-ahj] and “Minor Swing”, was Django [JAYN-goh] Reinhardt. Jazz performers often use the archtop type of this instrument, such as the one made by Gibson, and they typically use electric instruments. Name this fretted instrument that usually has six strings and may be played with a pick or strummed. Answer: guitars 2. This playwright often collaborated with Elisabeth Hauptmann; their most famous work shares lines with their play Happy End. In that famous work, this person depicted Police Chief Jackie “Tiger” Brown trying to help somebody who is sentenced to hang anyway. This writer and Hauptmann also collaborated with Kurt Weill [“vile”], who wrote the music for that play. This person collaborated with Margarete Steffin on a play in which the title characters sell provisions to soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War. A member of that family is nicknamed “Swiss Cheese”. Name this playwright who worked on Mother Courage and Her Children and The Threepenny Opera. Answer: (Eugen) Bertolt (Friedrich) Brecht [BAIR-tohlt brekt] 3. This person’s signature was four lines, with the top line being an ‘S’ between two dots. This person and his brothers Bartholomew and Diego were investigated by Francisco de Bobadilla [boh-bah-DEE-yah], who sent them home in chains.

  • April 5, 2016 Dear Friends, April Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April 5, 2016 Dear Friends, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The reality of sexual assault in our communities is sobering. There are numbers that seem almost surreal, such as 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men in the U.S. have experienced an attempted or completed rape. Others hit us personally because we can visualize them, 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12. HAVEN is dedicated to combating this horrible epidemic through our comprehensive programing, including the Safe Therapeutic Assault Response Team (START). START nurses conduct forensic medical exams designed to collect evidence and document injuries after a victim has been assaulted. Victims are also connected to a HAVEN advocate who explains the daunting legal process and available options. Last year, we provided 181 exams to women and men ages 14 and up. Starting this spring, HAVEN has expanded our programming to provide expert care for infants, toddlers and pre-teens since we know 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys will experience a sexual assault. Here are several ways you can join the movement to end sexual assault and help create a healthier community. Enclosed you’ll find more information on each opportunity. • Host a casual day at your workplace to support Denim Day • Conduct a Donation Drive • Support HAVEN’s Annual Gala • Attend our screening of The Hunting Ground Please review the enclosed materials to learn more about how you can help survivors of sexual assault. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stephanie Holland at 248.332.3705 or [email protected].
