April 5, 2016 Dear Friends, April Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month April 5, 2016 Dear Friends, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The reality of sexual assault in our communities is sobering. There are numbers that seem almost surreal, such as 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men in the U.S. have experienced an attempted or completed rape. Others hit us personally because we can visualize them, 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12. HAVEN is dedicated to combating this horrible epidemic through our comprehensive programing, including the Safe Therapeutic Assault Response Team (START). START nurses conduct forensic medical exams designed to collect evidence and document injuries after a victim has been assaulted. Victims are also connected to a HAVEN advocate who explains the daunting legal process and available options. Last year, we provided 181 exams to women and men ages 14 and up. Starting this spring, HAVEN has expanded our programming to provide expert care for infants, toddlers and pre-teens since we know 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys will experience a sexual assault. Here are several ways you can join the movement to end sexual assault and help create a healthier community. Enclosed you’ll find more information on each opportunity. • Host a casual day at your workplace to support Denim Day • Conduct a Donation Drive • Support HAVEN’s Annual Gala • Attend our screening of The Hunting Ground Please review the enclosed materials to learn more about how you can help survivors of sexual assault. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stephanie Holland at 248.332.3705 or [email protected]. With Gratitude, Rachel M. Decker Executive Director, HAVEN Foundation HOW YOU CAN HELP HOST A CASUAL DAY AT YOUR WORKPLACE April 27, 2016 is National Denim Day Ask your employees to donate a dollar (or more) to wear jeans to work. Doing so will draw attention to this cause and provide valuable support for HAVEN. Review the enclosed flyer to learn more about this effort. CONDUCT A DONATION DRIVE The HAVEN Residential Program provides three meals and living supplies to our residents each day and the START Program provides supplies to victims of sexual assault after their exam. Donated supplies help ensure they get what they need, but remember, we can only accept NEW ITEMS FROM OUR NEEDS LIST. For a complete list of our monthly needs, visit www.haven-oakland.org/donate. You can also go to this web address to donate monetarily. SUPPORT HAVEN’S ANNUAL GALA The 2016 Hopes & Dreams Gala is on Friday, May 6 at the Detroit Marriott Troy. The event will be an elegant evening including dinner and cocktails, live entertainment and live and silent auctions. You can also dance the night away at the Afterglow Party. Many sponsorship opportunities and tickets are available. Visit www.haven-oakland.org/events/gala-event to learn more or contact Stephanie Holland at 248.322.3705 or [email protected]. ATTEND OUR SCREENING OF THE HUNTING GROUND The Hunting Ground is a documentary film about the incidence of sexual assault on college campuses in the United States. The documentary focuses on Andrea Pino and Annie E. Clark, two former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students who were raped while enrolled in school and led a campaign to file a Title IX complaint against UNC. Lady Gaga recorded an original song, "Til It Happens to You," for the film. More details about the event can be found on the enclosed flyer. FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/havenonline; Twitter and Instagram @HAVEN_Oakland; and LinkedIn at HAVEN of Oakland County, Michigan www.HAVEN-Oakland.org ROME, ITALY, 1997 A 17-year-old girl was picked up by her 45-year-old instructor for her first driving lesson. An hour later he abandoned her in an alley after raping her, leaving her to find her own way home. She reported the incident and the case was prosecuted. The driving instructor was convicted of rape and sent to jail. ROME, ITALY, 1998 The driving instructor appeals the sentence. The case makes it to the Italian Supreme Court where it is overturned and the perpetrator was released. In a statement released by the head judge, he argued, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them….and by removing the jeans…it was no longer rape, but consensual sex.” Enraged by the verdict, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Parliament building. Since then, Peace Over Violence in Los Angeles, CA has been organizing an annual Denim Day to protest sexual violence and to raise awareness throughout the United States. OAKLAND COUNTY, MICHIGAN, APRIL 2016 We are inviting area businesses and schools to raise awareness about sexual violence by allowing staff and students to participate in Denim Day on April 27, 2016. Wear denim to work or school to show your support. Make a social statement with your fashion statement. Please join us in taking a stand against sexual violence! www.HAVEN-Oakland.org To participate, contact Stephanie Holland at 248.322.3705 or [email protected] .

  • Women Singer-Songwriters As Exemplary Actors: the Music of Rape and Domestic Violence
Women Singer-Songwriters as Exemplary Actors: The Music of Rape and Domestic Violence KATHANNE W. GREENE At the 2016 Oscars, Lady Gaga, joined onstage by fifty rape survivors, performed the song “Til It Happens to You.” The Oscar-nominated song by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren was written for The Hunting Ground, a documentary film about campus sexual assault. Over thirty-one million people viewed the Oscar performance, which brought some in the audience to tears, and the video on Vevo has received over twenty-nine million views with another twenty-eight million views on YouTube. The film, video, and performance are the result of a growing political and social movement by young high school and college women to force schools, universities, and colleges to vigorously respond to rape and sexual harassment on campus. In response to complaints filed by more and more young women, the Obama Administration and the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in the Department Education began investigating claims that schools, colleges, and universities were not actively and adequately responding to claims of sexual assault and harassment despite passage of the Clery Act of 1990. The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to report data on crime on campus, provide support and accommodations to survivors, and establish written policies and procedures for the handling of campus crime.1 Since 2011, the OCR has expanded its efforts to address sexual assault on campuses as violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination

  • The Hunting Ground Discussion Guide
www.influencefilmclub.com The Hunting Ground Discussion Guide Director: Kirby Dick Year: 2015 Time: 103 min You might know this director from: The Invisible War (2012) Outrage (2009) This Film is Not Yet Rated (2006) Twist of Faith (2004) Derrida (2002) Chain Camera (2001) Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997) Private Practices: The Story of a Sex Surrogate (1986) FILM SUMMARY Filmmaking team Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering are well-versed in the lack of justice experienced by survivors of sexual violence. Their Academy Award-nominated “The Invisible War” exposes the U.S. military’s mishandling of sexual assault cases. In THE HUNTING GROUND they shine a light on the issue of sexual assault on U.S. university campuses, examining institutional cover-ups and the brutal social toll that sexual violence takes on victims and their families. In THE HUNTING GROUND, Dick and Ziering crisscross the country, interviewing campus assault survivors, their families, and a chorus of campus administrators, professors, psychologists, and attorneys whose testimony exposes pervasive sexual violence at American colleges. A resounding message emerges: where help and support are needed most, they are sorely lacking. Survivors are discouraged from reporting the crimes committed against them, and those that do report often face apathy, blame, threats, and retaliation from fellow students, administrators, and law enforcement. Striving to keep campus crime statistics low and to protect their public reputations, universities often downplay or ignore instances of sexual violence. Yet THE HUNTING GROUND offers a hopeful and galvanizing twist: the stories of Annie Clark and Andrea Pino, two survivors-turned-activists who file a federal discrimination lawsuit against their own university, and inspire a network of survivors to find a voice and take a stand against injustice.

  • Title IX Complaints Filed Against American University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Indiana University at Bloomington, and Monmouth University
Title IX Complaints Filed Against American University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Indiana University at Bloomington, and Monmouth University EMBARGOED UNTIL 12PM EST, TUESDAY, MARCH 8TH Sexual assault survivors filed federal Title IX complaints against four institutions for mishandling sexual assault cases to the U.S. Department of Education this week, according to the national survivor advocacy organization End Rape on Campus. The complaints come on the heels of a groundbreaking performance by Lady Gaga and featured 50 survivors at this year’s Academy Awards, highlighting the need for continuing the national dialogue about rape and sexual violence. The complaints against these schools — based in Washington, D.C., Indiana, Alabama, and New Jersey — are markedly similar. At all four universities, nocontact orders between the survivors and their perpetrators were not enforced, and several of the survivors were subjected to ongoing retaliation by their assailants and their assailants’ friends. All of the investigations into sexual assault, which were conducted by the schools, took significantly longer than the 60day timeframe recommended by the U.S. Department of Education. Ultimately, all of the survivors’ perpetrators were either found not responsible or were given minimal sanctions, creating a hostile environment for the survivors and severely compromising their educational experiences. The main Title IX violations alleged in the complaints are outlined as follows: Faith Ferber was sexually assaulted while she was a student
