Affective Agency in Viola Davis's Award Speeches
Yearbook of the Poznań Linguistic Meeting 6 (2020), pp. 159–181 DOI: 10.2478/yplm-2020-0009 To be sentimental, powerful, and Black: Affective agency in Viola Davis’s award speeches Agata Janicka Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań [email protected] Abstract This article considers how the long-standing American cultural tradition of sentimen- tality and its affective power can be discursively utilized by contemporary Black women in the public contexts. Using the concept of sentimental political storytelling as discussed by Rebecca Wanzo, I analyze three award speeches given by Viola Davis – a popular and acclaimed African American actress whose speeches generate signifi- cant public and media attention. Framing Davis’s speeches within the Black feminist epistemology, I draw on the conventions of sentimental storytelling proposed by Wanzo to argue that Davis is an example of a Black woman skilfully using sentimen- tality to gain affective agency and mobilize sympathy from mainstream public while at the same time narrativizing African Americans’ lived experiences to have their hu- manity and their struggle recognized today. Given the continued prioritization of White female suffering in the American media over stories of Black women’s struggle, the ways in which Black women can discursively utilize sentimentality to gain affective agency and negotiate self-definition in interactional public contexts is of significant sociolinguistic interest. Keywords: African American women; sentimentality; affective agency; discourse; media. 0. Introduction Sentimentality holds a major potential for sociolinguistic studies of language. Inherently emotional, sentimentality has had a long-lasting and conspicuous role in the American literary history, and it has been the object of considerable attention in literary criticism (Howard 1999). -

2020 Tribeca Film Festival® Announces Feature Lineup
Press Materials available here: https://tribeca1.box.com/s/74t5qily2ipxv9zdgl6g33wtofvzc8f5 ® 2020 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FEATURE LINEUP OF FILMS Program highlights politically, culturally and socially relevant films from diverse storytellers NEW YORK – March 3, 2020 – The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, today unveiled its feature film lineup. Continuing its tradition of championing the discovery of emerging voices and celebrating new work from established talent, the 19th edition of the Festival foregrounds comedic, music-centered, political and socially-conscious films from diverse storytellers who use art to inspire positive change and community restoration. The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival will run April 15-26. The features program will include 115 films from 124 filmmakers from across 33 different countries. The line-up includes 95 world premieres, 2 international premieres, 4 North American premieres, 4 U.S. premieres, and 9 New York premieres and one sneak preview. This year's program includes 19 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects, and 44 of the feature films have one or more women directors. The feature program was curated from 3,385 submissions, and this year’s Festival received a record 10,397 total submissions across all categories. “First comes the story, then empathy, then comes change. When you change the narrator, you empower different voices to show audiences new worlds through their eyes,” said Paula Weinstein, Chief Content Officer of Tribeca Enterprises and program advisor. “We are privileged to have so many new and rich worlds brought to life by visionary storytellers. We hope audiences leave the Festival deeply touched, moved, and entertained.” “This year’s festival embraces the unique power of film to bring people together -- whether that’s literally the communal experience of watching a film in a packed theater, or the more intangible way a great film can make you empathize with a stranger’s struggle,” said Cara Cusumano, Festival Director. -

BACK in PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020
No. 191 BACK IN PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020 • July/August No.191 EDITORIAL Theodore Theodoridis UEFA General Secretary A MOMENT TO SAVOUR, A TIME TO REFLECT fter the unprecedented hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, football is steadily coming back to life. This edition of UEFA Direct reports on the imminent return of our elite competitions, Aassessing the obstacles that the European football community has had to overcome together to successfully rewrite UEFA’s competitions calendar – both for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. UEFA’s return to play, with matches set to kick off in August, represents a milestone moment and the first chance to take stock of our journey to date through an extraordinary period. The COVID-19 pandemic’s outbreak in the spring brought European football to a standstill, and there was understandable concern that UEFA would not be able to finish its 2019/20 club competition season. Other major competitions, such as UEFA EURO 2020 and Women’s EURO 2021, were postponed for a year. The outlook was uncertain, and the ramifications were difficult to predict. As our president underlines in his interview on pages 6–7, despite these challenges, UEFA maintained a steadfast belief that better times would come. Now, following a great deal of hard work, cooperation and compromise behind the scenes, we are ready to deliver a match schedule in August and beyond that will bring the latest club competitions to completion, and set the 2020/21 competition campaign in motion. The moment when ‘live’ UEFA action returns to the spotlight will doubtless be one to savour, offering hope and joy to football lovers young and old. -
