14 Tuesday, February 14, 2017 Tuesday, February 14, 2017 15 Ellen DeGeneres @TheEllenShow Wow. What a sweep. Congratulations @Adele and of course the incredible @Beyonce. #GRAMMYs Bafta Film Awards 2017 London ollywood musical “La La Land” picked up five BritishH Bafta film awards on Sunday, including best director and actress, paving the way for Oscar success later this month. The dreamy tribute to the heyday of Hollywood musicals was named best film, while also picking up gongs for cinematography and original Best Film: La La Land music, in the ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Best Director: Accepting the award for Damien Chazelle, La La Land best director -- beating off Best British Film: I, Daniel Blake competition from the likes of Los Angeles and Song of the Year -- along with two other at songwriting, for her ubiquitous hit “Hello” Ken Loach and Tom Ford -- Best Actor: Casey Affleck, dele on Sunday triumphed once again at pop awards. Beyonce walked away with two and Album of the Year for “25.” Damien Chazelle said it was Manchester by the Sea Athe Grammys with five awards for her trophies. And in a sentimental homage to Adele made a similar sweep in 2012 with an “incredible honour” and a Best Actress: latest blockbuster album of ballads, but she late rock icon David Bowie, his final album her last album “21” -- which remains the only pleasure to be there along with Emma Stone, La La Land used her moment in the sun to heap praise “Blackstar” earned five awards, including four album to have outsold “25” in the past decade. -
The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nicholson
The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone. Date of review: Thursday the 12th of October, 2006. Director: Martin Scorsese Classification: MA (15+) Duration: 152 minutes We rate it: Five stars. For any serious cinemagoer or lover of film as an art form, the arrival of a new film by Martin Scorsese is a reason to get very excited indeed. Scorsese has long been regarded as one of the greatest of America’s filmmakers; since the mid-1980s he has been regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, period. With landmark works like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) to his credit, Scorsese is a director for whom any actor will go the distance, and the casts the director manages to assemble for his every project are extraordinarily impressive. As a visualist Scorsese is a force to be reckoned with, and his soundtracks regularly become known as classic creations; his regular collaborators, including editor Thelma Schoonmaker and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus are the best in their respective fields. Paraphrasing all of this, one could justifiably describe Martin Scorsese as one of the most important and interesting directors on the face of the planet. The Departed, Scorsese’s newest film, is on one level a remake of a very successful Hong Kong action thriller from 2002 called Infernal Affairs. That film, written by Felix Chong and directed by Andrew Lau, set the box office on fire in Hong Kong and became a cult hit around the world. -

Affective Agency in Viola Davis's Award Speeches
Yearbook of the Poznań Linguistic Meeting 6 (2020), pp. 159–181 DOI: 10.2478/yplm-2020-0009 To be sentimental, powerful, and Black: Affective agency in Viola Davis’s award speeches Agata Janicka Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań [email protected] Abstract This article considers how the long-standing American cultural tradition of sentimen- tality and its affective power can be discursively utilized by contemporary Black women in the public contexts. Using the concept of sentimental political storytelling as discussed by Rebecca Wanzo, I analyze three award speeches given by Viola Davis – a popular and acclaimed African American actress whose speeches generate signifi- cant public and media attention. Framing Davis’s speeches within the Black feminist epistemology, I draw on the conventions of sentimental storytelling proposed by Wanzo to argue that Davis is an example of a Black woman skilfully using sentimen- tality to gain affective agency and mobilize sympathy from mainstream public while at the same time narrativizing African Americans’ lived experiences to have their hu- manity and their struggle recognized today. Given the continued prioritization of White female suffering in the American media over stories of Black women’s struggle, the ways in which Black women can discursively utilize sentimentality to gain affective agency and negotiate self-definition in interactional public contexts is of significant sociolinguistic interest. Keywords: African American women; sentimentality; affective agency; discourse; media. 0. Introduction Sentimentality holds a major potential for sociolinguistic studies of language. Inherently emotional, sentimentality has had a long-lasting and conspicuous role in the American literary history, and it has been the object of considerable attention in literary criticism (Howard 1999). -

Centering on the reminiscences of Rose McNulty, a woman who has spent over fifty years in state institutions, The Secret Scripture is a deeply moving story of love lost and redeemed, against the backdrop of an emerging Irish state in which female sexuality and independence unsettles the colluding patriarchies of church and nationalist politics. Demonstrating Sheridan’s trademark skill with actors, his profound sense of story, and depth of feeling for Irish social history, The Secret Scripture marks a return to personal themes for the writer-director as well as a reunion with producer Noel Pearson, almost a quarter of a century after their breakout success with My Left Foot. -
