    Thornton - le - Dale Parish Plan 2008 - 2013 The Parish of Thornton-le-Dale Whitby Gate Malton Gate INTRODUCTION During 2006 Thornton le Dale Parish Council decided to move towards the preparation of a Parish Plan with the help of the Yorkshire Rural Community Council (YRCC). During the autumn of that year an open day for all parishioners was held to explain the nature and purpose of a parish plan. This resulted in the formation of a steering group which included a Parish councillor, interested parishioners and representatives from YRCC and NYMNP. The main task for the group was the preparation of a questionnaire designed to find out what the community wanted for the future development of the Thornton-le-Dale Parish. The results would provide the basis for a plan which could be used by the relevant authorities when any development for the area was being looked at during the next five years. The questionnaire was delivered to every household (860) and 334 were returned, a response rate of 39%. A group of volunteers collated and analysed the responses - the main concerns expressed were traffic problems, the visual appearance of the parish and housing. The following pages form the basis for an action plan which will reflect the needs, concerns and aspirations of the community. It will only succeed if everyone comes together and forms an active dynamic community and the fact that some fifteen volunteers have already been actively working to help to produce the plan is a hopeful sign. Thank you to everyone who answered the questionnaire - this is a big step forward for Thornton-le-Dale Parish.

This watercourse, in origin a beck that provided fresh water, was tamed and rechannelled in the 18th century to create a very deliberate picturesque scene that was an extension of the landscaping around Thornton Hall as well as a power source for the mill. It is this landscaped stream with cascades and crystal-clear water which gives Thornton le Dale its distinctive character. Then and now Plate 1. The beck’s picturesque qualities may have been difficult to appreciate in times of regular flooding The street pattern of the village is interesting. There are some relics of the planned 12th century layout surviving and hints of its early origins as at least three, possibly four medieval manorial estates.

To increase the number of Duke of Burgundy colonies by 20% 3. To restore pearl-bordered fritillary to its 1990s range 4. To increase the number of streamside habitats managed for small pearl-bordered fritillary by 50% Pearl bordered fritillary (Boloria euphrosyne) Introduction The pearl-bordered fritillary is a medium-sized butterfly that emerges in May (in April in exceptionally warm years). Its larvae feed mainly on common dog-violet, although other violets may occasionally be used. It is found on well-drained habitats that support a mosaic of grasses and bracken, often with patchy scrub. Woodland rides and clearings may also be used. Pearl-bordered fritillary larvae require a warm microclimate in which to develop. Larvae will often bask on bracken litter, which is why the presence of this plant is often critical. The butterfly is also dependent upon abundant nectar plants and sites may be unsuitable if this resource is scarce. The pearl-bordered fritillary has largely disappeared from eastern and central counties of England and is increasingly scarce in southern and western parts. It has also undergone a substantial decline in Wales, although it remains fairly widespread in Scotland. Detailed surveys revealed that one third of English colonies became extinct between 1997 and 2004, leaving perhaps 170 populations.
