So, how does one approach a new album when your name is Coldplay and you’re about to celebrate your twentieth anniversary? The answer comes to us in the form of ‘A Head Full Of Dreams’ , and what a response it is! Coldplay may surprise many with what is an exciting, colourful, even festive effort here, with the group leader insisting it's a record apart from attempts. "It’s our seventh thing and the way we look at it it’s like the last Harry Potter book.” He explains to the BBC Radio 1. “That’s not to say there won’t be another thing one day, but this is the completion of something . I have to think of it as the final thing we’re doing, otherwise we wouldn’t put everything into it.” And indeed they have – featuring Noel Gallagher, Avicii, Merry Clayton, Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow (former Mrs. Martin) and even a certain Barack Obama (sampled on a title), ‘A Head Full Of Dreams’ moves through pop ballads, dancefloor tracks and even almost crosses over into R&B. © CM / Qobuz. “The Whole Feminist Taking-your- Clothes-off Thing”: Negotiating the Critique of Gender Inequality in UK Music Industries Toby Bennett Solent University [email protected] Abstract This article considers the critique of inequality, exploitation and exclusion in contemporary UK music industries, in light of the latter’s growing internal concerns over work-based gender relations. The creative sector’s persistent inequalities are at odds with its professed liberal, egalitarian, meritocratic values and attitudes. Yet, within music’s industrial production cultures, a dismissive postfeminist sensibility has come under pressure through a reflexive critical moment of popular feminist discourse, expressed in trade press critique, between 2013 and the present moment. Drawing from a study of intermediary work in UK major record labels, the article takes a pragmatist approach to documenting and theorizing this critique – alongside institutional mechanisms, like company policies and corporate PR, that respond to it – in terms of growing industrial reflexivity. Tensions over the representation of work, the nature of inequality, intergenerational and epistemic injustice emerge as key themes, with implications for critical research on popular music industries. KEYWORDS: Creative labour, Inequalities, Industrial Reflexivity, Major Record Labels, Post-feminism. Introduction Between 2007 and 2016 I circulated in and around the UK’s major record labels. • Catherine Russell Press Release (Sarah Folger)
Grammy® Award-Winning Vocalist Catherine Russell to Release New Album, Harlem On My Mind - September 9 on Jazz Village National Tour Kicks Off July 7 Through November 19 "...early jazz performed with spirit, understanding and a sense of fun." - The New York Times "A wonderfully charismatic performer with a show-stopping voice." - The Washington Post "The best blues and jazz singer going today." - The Wall Street Journal With her sixth album, Harlem On My Mind, Grammy® Award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell journeys to the blue heart of the great African American songbook. Swinging forth with soulful interpretations, Russell taps the golden age of Harlem, as befits this vibrant daughter of jazz. Vocalists Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Dinah Washington provide inspiration where tunesmiths like Benny Carter, Irving Berlin, Andy Razaf and Fats Waller once ruled the roost of a renaissance which continues to reverberate. Of the title track, Russell says, “It’s about not forgetting your roots,” which also serves as her modus operandi for the entire collection. “The album is comprised of songs from artists who played at The Apollo in Harlem, where all African American artists of note appeared.” Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist/composer/bandleader and Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. Russell notes, “My mother was born and raised in Harlem and my father led one of the leading orchestras in Harlem, which was part of the inspiration for this album.” Harlem On My Mind showcases Russell’s honey rich voice in a variety of settings.

  • Youth Employment
This book sets out to examine the effects of the Great Recession on youth employment. employmentYouth Despite considerable variation across Europe, even in better-performing countries significant pockets of youth struggled to make successful and sustainable transitions into employment. The contributions to this volume summarise the findings of a large-scale EU funded project on Strategic Transitions for Youth Labour in Europe (STYLE). The project provides a comprehensive analysis of the causes of youth unemployment and assesses the effectiveness of labour market policies. Authors here discuss the distinctive characteristics of the current phase of youth employment including labour market flexibility, skills mismatch, migration, family legacies, and the increasing role for EU policy learning and transfer. The book includes over 90 authors and more than 60 individual contributions intended to provide an accessible summary covering the breadth of research conducted, giving a platform for young people’s own perceptions and providing an analysis of what needs to be done. “This book is a must read: It will stimulate mutual learning both in terms of policy exchanges as well as interdisciplinary fertilization.” Günther Schmid, Professor Emeritus Free University Berlin, Handbook STYLE and Director Emeritus of the Research Unit “Labor Market Policy Editors: and Employment”, Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) Jacqueline O’Reilly “Presented in a rigorous yet easily accessible form, written for busy Clémentine Moyart people, this book is essential reading for policy makers and researchers.” Tiziana Nazio Dr Brendan Burchell, Reader at the Faculty of Human, and Mark Smith Social, and Political Science at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge.
