Bend It Like Beckham Dir. Gurinder Chadha, UK/Germany 2002, Certificate 12A Introduction Bend It Like Beckham was one of the surprise hits of 2002, making over £11,000,000 at the UK Box Office and hitting a chord with a range of audiences at cinemas. A vibrant and colourful British comedy about a young girl from a Sikh family who desperately wants to play football against the wishes of her traditional parents, the film can be seen to follow the path of other recent British-Asian films such as Bhaji on the Beach, Anita and Me and East Is East in its examination of culture clashes and family traditions. Bend It Like Beckham takes these themes and adds extra ingredients to the dish – football, Shakespearean confusions over identity and sexuality, in-jokes about both British pop culture and the Sikh way of life, and a music soundtrack mixing a range of East/West sounds and musical styles. 4 C olumbia U niversity RECORD June 11, 2004 It’s a Wrap: Columbia Film Festival Winners Announced ilm Division students received $110,000 in Fawards at the 17th Annual Columbia University Film Festi- val for works that ranged from a woman’s daily struggle to care for her child and her mother, who has Alzheimer’s disease (Extreme Mom) to a documen- tary in which members of a Harlem family recount the chal- lenges they have faced since Gordon Parks photographed them in 1968 for Life magazine (Family Portrait). The student-run festival, pre- sented by the Film Division of the School of the Arts, included original short films and screen- play readings. It took place from May 1-7 in New York City and then headed west to Los Angeles June 2-3. HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES SCREENWRITERS AND MENTORS FOR 18TH ANNUAL SCREENWRITERS LAB LAB TO INCLUDE ALL FEMALE SCREENWRITER PARTICIPANTS WILL TAKE PLACE APRIL 6-8, 2018 IN EAST HAMPTON, NY East Hampton, NY (MarcH 20, 2018) – The Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) announced today the screenwriters and mentors for the 18th annual Screenwriters Lab, which will take place April 6-8, 2018, in East Hampton, New York. The Lab pairs rising screenwriters with established and knowledgeable screenwriters, directors, and producers for a weekend of one-on-one mentoring sessions. The three selected screenplays for 2018 are Esra Saydam’s “THe Mesopotamian,” Anu Valia’s “We Strangers,” and Aemilia Scott’s “BirtHday Suit.” Full bios of all Lab participants are included below. Creative Advisors’ Biographies BILL WHEELER Artistic Director Bill Wheeler started writing while enrolled in the Playwrights Horizon program at N.Y.U. His screenplay The Prime Gig was selected for the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters Lab. The Prime Gig featured Vince Vaughn and Ed Harris and debuted on IFC. Since then, Bill has written screenplays for a wide range of partners, Mirage Enterprises, Mayhem Pictures, Steven Soderbergh’s Section 8, New Regency and Disney. Current projects include an adaptation of the futurist manga Ghost in the Shell for DreamWorks, and a pilot about the adventures of the fictional pastor of a Georgia megachurch for HBO. His film The Hoax, directed by Lasse Hallstrom and starring Richard Gere, was released by Miramax. It was named by both Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times as one of the ten best films of 2007. Most recently, Bill adapted for the screen Mohsin Hamid's novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Directed by Mira Nair, the film features Liev Schrieber, Kate Hudson and Rizwan Ahmed. “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” was the opening night film at the 2012 Venice Film Festival and will be released in theaters in April. ANJUM RAJABALI Anjum Rajabali’s first film, Drohkaal (1992), was written in collaboration with director Govind Nihalani. Subsequently, nine more films written by him have been released, including Ghulam, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, and Raajneeti. Along the way, he was also the Commissioning Editor of a TV channel, set up and headed the script department of a couple of production houses, and has been a script doctor and consultant to several films, including Gangaajal and Apaharan.
