PERFORMING ETHNOGRAPHIC INQUIRY INTO AMERICA’S BLACK YOUTH CULTURE: THE IMPACT OF HIP HOP AND RAP MUSIC ON TODAY’S YOUTH SOCIETY by ROSE CUMMINGS SPIKES (Under the Direction of John A. Weaver) ABSTRACT This is an ethnographic inquiry into America’s black youth culture. It is an exploration of how the “hip hop culture” influences black youth culture. Drawing on the works of Rose (1994a, 1994b), Dimitriadis (2001), and Kitwana (2002), I explored impact of the hip hop culture in the areas of fashion, language and identity through the lens of young black males. To provide relevant theories for promoting higher academic achievement in African American males, I studied the works of Gay (2000), Ladson-Billings (2006, 2003, 2001, 1999), Weaver & Daspit (2003) and Watkins (2001). Sixth grade male students in a PreK-8 school, located in Savannah, Georgia were the focus of this study. Using group discussions and interviews, I documented the time spent with the students using hip hop and rap music. Each student’s view of hip hop and its significance allowed me to better understand their interest in and reverence of the rap and hip hop culture. Much of the literature on hip hop culture deals with music, fashion, language and identity and its impact on contemporary youth culture. A limited number of educational text explored the how hip hop culture can be used to engage African American youth in culturally relevant pedagogy. 2 As a result of the drive for national standards in the United States today, school districts face the challenges of having all students performing at high academic levels. Superintendents, school officials and administrators, and teachers are frustrated by high stakes testing and its impact on meeting Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP). In a school district in which the academic achievement of all learners students is important, it is the intent of this study will be to promote the use of hip hop culture to engage all students in culturally relevant pedagogy.     TranscUlturAl, vol. 6.1 (2014), 70-83. http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/TC Conflicts of Interest, Culture Jamming and Subversive (S)ignifications: The High Fashion Logo as Locational Hip Hop Articulation Rebecca Halliday York University In the fall of 2012, an unheard of fashion label called “Conflict of Interest NYC” (C.O.I.) released three black and white, unisex t-shirts for sale online. Each t-shirt took the brand name and/or logo of a storied fashion house – Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Givenchy – and imposed a set of urban and sexualized representations and hip hop references to enact a high-end-low-end subversion of the brand’s connotations. The t-shirts came to public attention after Internet “street style” photographer Tommy Ton captured New York fashion editor Shiona Turini wearing a BALLINCIAGA t-shirt on the street at London Fashion Week and posted it on Condé Nast Media’s fashion bible Style.com. This article contextualizes the t-shirts within historical interactions between fashion and hip hop culture and reads the BALLINCIAGA t-shirt for its intertextual connections to hip hop and black oral tradition.1 In this sense, my analysis constitutes a “translation” of and between sets of cultural “codes” (Hall 21): in this instance, a translation of fashion brand names and subcultural references. Conflict of Interest’s t-shirts present a sophisticated incidence of culture jamming that parodies high fashion brands through hip hop references; it thus criticizes high fashion’s historical Eurocentric elitism and articulates urban conditions. While the t-shirts were not created as an explicit political protest, they are indeed subversive, and their creation and proliferation from within fashion illuminates the politics of fashion’s cultural appropriations and socioeconomic identities.

The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

There are benevolent black superheroes, like Storm, played most famously in 2006 by Halle Berry (of whom more later) in X-Men: The Last Stand , and Frozone, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson in the 2004 animated fi lm The Incredibles. But they are a rarity. This is why Will Smith and Wesley Snipes are so unusual: they have both played superheroes – Smith the ham-fi sted boozer Hancock , and Snipes the vampire-human hybrid Blade . Pulling away from the parallel reality of superheroes, the two actors themselves offer case studies.

    Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011 Several years ago through eBay I bought colored-vinyl versions of The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album) from a major fan named Ed. After I paid, he asked if I would be interested in some bootlegs he had that featured sessions recorded while The Beatles were working on their amazing albums—he was willing to transfer them to CD free of charge. I mentioned in my thank you e-mail that I was old enough to have seen the Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He replied it was "an honor" to meet someone who saw the Beatles live (Ed was born in 1966). This made me think that although those who watched The Beatles that night were part of a huge television audience—almost 74 million1—it's a set whose numbers have decreased tremendously in the 45 years that have passed. That realization, Ed's comment and generous offer to send the CDs, and the about-the-same-time coincidence of having dinner with a man named Bill who saw the Beatles perform in Milwaukee in the fall of 1964 started a chain of events that led me to write two articles. The first, "A Day in the Center of Beatlemania," is about the band's September 4, 1964, appearance at the Arena in Milwaukee. The seed for the second—this one—was planted after Ed's CDs arrived. These were interesting for their roughness and for the insights they provided into the experimentation that produced musical passages such as the unusual Paul McCartney organ part that opens and becomes the backbone of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." On one I was hearing works in progress ranging from the acoustic beginning of "All Together Now" to John Lennon performing an early version of "Good Morning, Good Morning" when out of the blue comes Pete Drake, his talking guitar, and the sliding-steel-words: "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me." The track is from the bootleg Through Many Years that focuses on George Harrison and Ringo Starr.2 Ed had combined various bootlegs on each of the CDs he sent.

Moncell Durden., Assistant Professor of Practice University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Introduction Hip-hop dance has become one of the most popular forms of dance expression in the world. The explosion of hip-hop movement and culture in the 1980s provided unprecedented opportunities to inner-city youth to gain a different access to the “American” dream; some companies saw the value in using this new art form to market their products for commercial and consumer growth. This explosion also aided in an early downfall of hip-hop’s first dance form, breaking. The form would rise again a decade later with a vengeance, bringing older breakers out of retirement and pushing new generations to develop the technical acuity to extraordinary levels of artistic corporeal genius. We will begin with hip-hop’s arduous beginnings. Born and raised on the sidewalks and playgrounds of New York’s asphalt jungle, this youthful energy that became known as hip-hop emerged from aspects of cultural expressions that survived political abandonment, economic struggles, environmental turmoil and gang activity. These living conditions can be attributed to high unemployment, exceptionally organized drug distribution, corrupt police departments, a failed fire department response system, and Robert Moses’ building of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, which caused middle and upper-class residents to migrate North. The South Bronx lost 600,000 jobs and displaced more than 5,000 families. Between 1973 and 1977, and more than 30,000 fires were set in the South Bronx, which gave rise to the phrase “The Bronx is Burning.” This marginalized the black and Latino communities and left the youth feeling unrepresented, and hip-hop gave restless inner-city kids a voice.

    1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that. We were trying to make a buck.3 Richard Taninbaum (percussion) As early as May of 1979, Billboard magazine noted the growing popularity of “rapping DJs” performing live for clubgoers at New York City’s black discos.4 But it was not until September of the same year that the trend gar- nered widespread attention, with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” a fifteen-minute track powered by humorous party rhymes and a relentlessly funky bass line that took the country by storm and introduced a national audience to rap.
