02 www.vfl .com.au Coaching critical to pathway One of AFL Victoria’s most important objectives is to ensure our participants enjoy the best possible environment to play Australian football.

The role of the coach is critical in creating a safe, inclusive and positive environment, especially at junior level. I still recall lessons passed on to me as a junior and I’m grateful to have had role models that took the time to teach me about the fundamentals of the game and encourage me to make the most of my potential. Good coaching remains imperative throughout the diff erent stages of the talent pathway to help young players develop, not just as footballers but also as individuals. We are incredibly lucky to have a huge number of fantastic coaches in the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup, from revered mentors like Gary Ayres and Gerard FitzGerald to some of the brightest young coaches in our game. To support these individuals and every coach who takes charge on a weekend in the community, AFL Victoria off ers coaching courses designed for diff erent levels of football, from NAB Auskick through to senior community leagues and our state league competitions. We are pleased to see that the vast majority of coaches in Victoria are now accredited aft er completing one of our Level 1 courses. The courses are typically one-day or two-day workshops that focus on the fundamentals of coaching and arm individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to develop players at a specifi c age level. Over the past 18 months, AFL Victoria has strived to increase the number of female coaches in our game and break down barriers that stop them from pursuing coaching opportunities. While it is important to provide a pathway for talented female coaches, we also need to focus on ensuring women feel comfortable about taking their fi rst steps towards coaching at underage level. To achieve this goal, AFL Victoria has created the Level O Coaching Course, which is designed specifi cally for women who are keen to learn about the basics of football so they can contribute in a greater capacity at NAB Auskick clinics or junior football. The courses have proved incredibly popular and pleasingly this weekend we are holding our fi rst-ever Female Specifi c Level 1 Coaching Course with many of the graduates from the Level O Course set to attend. We hope all coaches, regardless of what level of the game they are involved in, understand how important their role is in helping football remain the sport of choice for all Victorians. 08 www.vfl .com.au Gordon’s fl ash fl exibility Tom Gordon’s versatility is coming in very handy for him this season, his fourth year with the Box Hill Hawks. Flexibility has been a buzzword at Hawthorn in the AFL for years, so it’s only natural that the club’s Peter Jackson VFL aff iliate is breeding players who can hold down multiple positions on the ground. 194cm Gordon’s ability to play as a defender or forward is earning him plenty of game time in 2015, despite the Hawks boasting an array of key-position options. It’s a big change from 2014, when a combination of poor form and serious knee and quad injuries later in the season limited the 23-year-old to two matches in Box Hill’s senior team. Gordon sat down with his coach Marco Bello at the end of a disappointing year to talk about how he could further his career with the Hawks. “I was a bit unsure of what I was going to do with football,” Gordon said. “I wanted to take on those bigger players and those players that have experience in the AFL, just to test my ability out and see what I’m capable of.” Taking on a new level of responsibility is something Gordon – also a leadership group member at Box Hill – has embraced as he looks to put his name in front of AFL recruiters at the end of the year. Thankfully for the fl exible big man from Beverley Hills, Bello subscribes to the Hawthorn approach to picking key-position players.

“He’s very precise in who he chooses for his side,” Gordon said. “If we’re struggling or aren’t quite getting the momentum our way, he likes to throw the side around a little bit, and I guess having those players that can play either end or in diff erent roles gives him that ability to do so.” Already this season, Gordon has found himself manning bullocking Footscray forward Jack Redpath in Round 1, before shift ing forward to boot four goals against Coburg in Round 2 and then returning to defence for a job on mercurial Werribee big man Majak Daw in Box Hill’s third match. It’s a measure of Gordon’s adaptability that he was named in the Hawks’ best players on all three occasions. “It’s sort of been an apprenticeship year... I play wherever they need me,” Gordon said. “I’m just happy to play some senior footy and get some continuity in my game.” For now he’s fi nding that continuity in the back line, happy to accept the challenge of testing himself against the monster forwards of the VFL. But as long as he’s playing with the Hawks, that could change at any moment. www.taccup.com.au 09 Switching sugary soft drinks to water can reduce tooth decay. Now into his third season at VFL level, the 20-year-old out of Rupertswood said his selection for September stoushes with Werribee in a semi fi nal and the Box Hill Hawks in a preliminary fi nal may have helped him turn a corner. Hetherington found himself going back and forth between Williamstown’s strong senior team and its Development League squad during his fi rst two years with the club. But since earning his spot in the Seagulls’ fi nal two matches of 2014, the 178cm wingman has strung together eight consecutive senior games from Round 2 this year. “Playing in the fi nals last year has defi nitely helped me this year,” Hetherington said. “It gave me confi dence knowing I’m at that level.” Hetherington isn’t yet completely confi dent that he’s secured his spot in the top-placed Williamstown side, but knows his position becomes stronger with each match he plays. “By playing seniors every week, it means I’m building friendships and trust in the other senior players,” Hetherington said. One of them is former Port Adelaide AFL player Mitch Banner, who Hetherington is looking up to as he comes to grips with a new role on the wing. Hetherington previously played most of his football as an inside midfi elder or half forward, but a wealth of strong bodies in the Seagulls’ centre square means coach Andrew Collins wants him to fi t in elsewhere. “At the start it was a bit of a challenge, a bit of an unknown area,” Hetherington said. “But now that I’ve consistently played a few Sean Hetherington has been selected as an Ambassador to support games (in the seniors), having teammates like VicHealth’s H30 Challenge - the off icial hydration partner for the 2015 Mitch Banner in that position and looking over Peter Jackson VFL season - encouraging fellow Victorian footballers and their vision has helped me become a better club supporters to switch sugary drinks for water. wingman.
