Next week: Werribee v Coburg 02 www.vfl .com.au Coaching critical to pathway One of AFL Victoria’s most important objectives is to ensure our participants enjoy the best possible environment to play Australian football. The role of the coach is critical in creating a safe, inclusive and positive environment, especially at junior level. I still recall lessons passed on to me as a junior and I’m grateful to have had role models that took the time to teach me about the fundamentals of the game and encourage me to make the most of my potential. Good coaching remains imperative throughout the diff erent stages of the talent pathway to help young players develop, not just as footballers but also as individuals. We are incredibly lucky to have a huge number of fantastic coaches in the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup, from revered mentors like Gary Ayres and Gerard FitzGerald to some of the brightest young coaches in our game. To support these individuals and every coach who takes charge on a weekend in the community, AFL Victoria off ers coaching courses designed for diff erent levels of football, from NAB Auskick through to senior community leagues and our state league competitions. We are pleased to see that the vast majority of coaches in Victoria are now accredited aft er completing one of our Level 1 courses. The courses are typically one-day or two-day workshops that focus on the fundamentals of coaching and arm individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to develop players at a specifi c age level. Over the past 18 months, AFL Victoria has strived to increase the number of female coaches in our game and break down barriers that stop them from pursuing coaching opportunities. While it is important to provide a pathway for talented female coaches, we also need to focus on ensuring women feel comfortable about taking their fi rst steps towards coaching at underage level. To achieve this goal, AFL Victoria has created the Level O Coaching Course, which is designed specifi cally for women who are keen to learn about the basics of football so they can contribute in a greater capacity at NAB Auskick clinics or junior football. The courses have proved incredibly popular and pleasingly this weekend we are holding our fi rst-ever Female Specifi c Level 1 Coaching Course with many of the graduates from the Level O Course set to attend. We hope all coaches, regardless of what level of the game they are involved in, understand how important their role is in helping football remain the sport of choice for all Victorians. Steven Reaper AFL Victoria CEO www.taccup.com.au 03 Daniel Venditti has been VFL mid-season enjoying a stellar season review for Coburg We’re now halfway through the home-and- away rounds of the 2015 Peter Jackson VFL season, so let’s take stock of where each club is at and what’s ahead for them in the run to the fi nals.
