Theosophically Inspired Movements in Denmark 587 Theosophically Inspired Movements in Denmark 587 Chapter 71 Theosophically Inspired Movements in Denmark René Dybdal Introduction In Denmark, like in many other countries in the West and elsewhere, modern Theosophy, as introduced by H.P. Blavatsky and H.S. Olcott in 1875, has played a key role as a source of inspiration to many religious groups. Although the Theosophical Society Adyar (here abbreviated TS) has left its mark on numer- ous contemporary new religious movements, globally and locally, the following presentation will focus solely on groups that historically descend from or doctrinally have their primary inspiration from this modern Theosophical tradi tion. It will be subdivided into two parts: (a) Groups formed in Denmark and (b) Groups imported to Denmark, i.e., international groups inspired by Theosophy that are or have been present in Denmark. A variety of new groups emerged in the wake of the transformation that the Danish section of TS underwent during the 1970s (as described in the chapter in the present volume on Theosophy in Denmark). Some of these groups, e.g., the Anthroposophical Society and Martinus Cosmology, have experienced a significant expansion over the years and are covered in separate chapters in the present volume. Consequently, they will only be mentioned briefly here. Groups Formed in Denmark Shan the Rising Light Up to the 1970s, the Theosophical current in Denmark was primarily repre- sented by the Danish section of the TS. The period was characterised by an urge to transform or even revolutionise both the organisation and the practice of this section, and several new initiatives were taken. A central figure was the Theosophist Jeanne Morashti (1946–2002), later known as Ananda Tara Shan, who in 1978 founded the TS lodge Den lysende Cirkel (The Shining Circle). Morashti soon met fierce resistance from other prominent Theosophists because of her claim that she was an active channel or even vehicle for the Ascended Masters. This resulted in the leading council of the TS in Denmark deciding to expel her only a few months after the foundation of Den lysende © koninklijke brill nv, leiden, 2016 | doi 10.1163/9789004325968_073 588 Dybdal Cirkel (Teosofia, November 1978). Together with a large group of former TS members, Morashti founded Shan the Rising Light, where she continued as a practitioner of channelling from the Ascended Masters to “mankind”, through group meditations as well as through private healing sessions. With the inten- tion of expanding their activities globally, Morashti, in 1982, moved with her family and a core of followers to Australia, where she established a new centre in Victoria. The leadership of the Danish branch passed into the hands of a couple of prominent figures of the group, including Asger Lorentsen, and the activities of Shan the Rising Light in Denmark in the following years were cen- tred around the spiritual commune Rosenhaven (The Rose Garden). Before her death in 2002 at the age of 56, Morashti founded several other organisations based on her teachings, such as the Society for Maitreya Theosophy in 1991, The Theosophical Fellowship in 1994, and Heart Flow Worldwide in 2001. After a period of turmoil in the mid-1990s, several central figures left the group, tak- ing a significant amount of members with them (see Den Gyldne Cirkel [The Golden Circle] below). At the time of writing (2014), Theosophical Fellowship and Heart Flow are the last two Morashti groups practising in Denmark, with between 150 and 200 members, respectively, in Copenhagen and Esbjerg in the western part of Jutland. Den Gyldne Cirkel During the early 1990s, a conflict erupted between prominent members of Shan the Rising Light and Jeanne Morashti, the charismatic leader of the group. Several of the schismatic members, including Asger Lorentsen, were opposed to what they experienced as an increasing centralisation in the group, which had positioned Morashti as the sole authority on doctrinal matters. Lorentsen decided to leave Shan the Rising Light in 1993, accusing the organi- sation of isolating itself from similar groups and being reluctant to accept that others, too, could establish some kind of contact with higher spiritual levels or Ascended Masters (Dybdal Pedersen 2005: 50). The following year, he and his wife, Yvonne Wassini, established Den Gyldne Cirkel (The Golden Circle). Due to his experience with Morashti’s group, Lorentsen intended Den Gyldne Cirkel to be a non-hierarchical organisation, where groups of individuals, as equal participants, could practise so-called lystjenester (light services), i.e., group meditations channelling healing light and energy to people or societies in need. Shortly after Den Gyldne Cirkel had initiated its meditation services, Lorentsen established a school in order to instruct people how to conduct these services locally. This resulted in local light service groups beginning to sprout nationwide already during the first years of the existence of Den Gyldne Cirkel. Another reason for this rapid expansion was that, through the 1980s and early 1990s, Lorentsen had become a well-known figure in various new .

No teacher who claimed to give the Truth has done so in so unconventional a manner: so totally contrary to the expectations of his followers, so utterly confusing to his detractors. His was a life that approximated the mystique befitting the archetypal religious teacher. The story of his early life is now familiar to his followers: a portentous birth impressed by his psychic mother's premonition that he, her eighth child, was someone who was not to be like other children (1); the discovery of the adolescent by the clairvoyantly gifted Charles W. Leadbeater (1854-1934) who asserted that K.(2) was to be overshadowed by a great Spiritual force in the person of Lord Maitreya, the World Teacher(3); and the first hint of this Force manifesting itself, in Benares on the 28th of December (1911). Leadbeater described this occurrence in The Herald of the Star(4) as a tremendous power, which was so evidently flowing through Alcyone [K.] that the next member [in line] fell at his feet, overwhelmed by this marvellous rush of force.

    Text of Resolutions passed by the General Council of the Theosophical Society Freedom of Thought As the Theosophical Society has spread far and wide over the world, and as members of all religions have become members of it without surrendering the special dogmas, teachings and beliefs of their re- spective faiths, it is thought desirable to emphasize the fact that there is no doctrine, no opinion, by whomsoever taught or held, that is in any way binding on any member of the Society, none which any member is not free to accept or reject. Approval of its three Objects is the sole condition of membership. No teacher, or writer, from H. P. Blavatsky onwards, has any authority to impose his or her teachings or opinions on members. Every member has an equal right to follow any school of thought, but has no right to force the choice on any other. Neither a candidate for any office nor any voter can be rendered ineligible to stand or to vote, because of any opinion held, or because of membership in any school of thought. Opinions or beliefs neither bestow privileges nor inflict penalties. The Members of the General Council earnestly request every member of the Theosophical Society to maintain, defend and act upon these fundamental principles of the Society, and also fearlessly to exercise the right of liberty of thought and of expression thereof, within the limits of courtesy and consideration for others. Freedom of the Society The Theosophical Society, while cooperating with all other bodies whose aims and activities make such cooperation possible, is and must remain an organization entirely independent of them, not committed to any objects save its own, and intent on developing its own work on the broadest and most inclusive lines, so as to move towards its own goal as indicated in and by the pursuit of those objects and that Divine Wisdom which in the abstract is implicit in the title ‘The Theosophical Society’.

    MIKAEL ROTHSTEIN Rituals and Religious Innovation The Meaning of Rituals in Shan the Rising Light Introduction The new religions, each in their own way, present a belief system unknown to the surroundings, thereby dissociating themselves from the familiar, while developing their own identity. Religious innovations, however, can also be studied via the development or change that takes place in the rituals. Now and then a new ritual orientation or ritual structure is a very significant expression of the new religious identity that is gradually developing, and at the same time informative with regards to the un- derlying belief system. In this paper it is my intention to present an example of how rituals may play an important role in the birth of a new religion, and how this religious innovation can be interpreted through the rituals. This example concerns a religious group — Shan the Rising Light — that has managed to introduce a comprehensive body of rituals into a belief system otherwise characteristed by its general lack of rituals and ceremonies (namely the theosophy of Madame Blavatsky), thereby setting the standards for a virtually new religion (another example of the new religions, focusing on the rituals and their function during the formation of the religion, is given in Rothstein 1991). Theoretical and Methodological Notes The studies of new religious groups in the Western world has primarily been sociological. Öf course this approach is absolutely necessary, but any sociological (and that very often means comparative) analysis needs monographical descriptions of the groups in order to do them justice. This contribution concerns one aspect of such a monographical outlining and stresses historical and phenomenological themes rather than sociology.

He/she can come and go at will from the earth plane without the Birth//Death cycle. Self-Realization - the awareness of our complete and indivisible union with God, which we are. This also means that the ego-self has come to know itself so clearly, so lovingly, so wisely that it is no longer run by the Shadow. When one is in the Illumined State or Self-Realized, there ceases to be any more inner or outer drama. The personal ego-self has surrendered fully and willingly into the loving embrace of the Soul 4-30-03 - LUCID DREAM - I went in and out of this dream several times and worked on the project it gave me, knowing I was awake and dreaming at the same time. I chose 4 masters from a larger group of individuals - 3 men and a woman. Their picture and information was within frames that were like railroad tracks, so the the corners came apart and could be put back together again. I took the frames off, doubled the size of the photos and the information. Then the hardest job was to put the frames back together so it enclosed all 4 Masters together using all the pieces, including the corners. The four Ascended Master teachers pictured below all presented themselves to me in dreams and visions over the last 20 years.

    JISMOR 8 +++ Mahdi and Maitreya (Miroku): Saviors in Islam and Buddhism Shigeru Kamada Abstract In Twelver Imami Shi’ism, the last, 12th Imam is believed to come back before the last day of the world as Mahdi (the rightly guided one, i.e., the savior) to save Muslim people from unjust rule and eliminate oppressors, thereby bringing righteousness and justice to the world. Accord- ing to the doctrine of Buddhism, on the other hand, Maitreya will come back to this world in the future as a Buddha for people who could not reach enlightenment during the days of Gau- tama Buddha, and will guide people who have failed to follow Buddhist teachings to enlighten- ment. Though both of these religions share the belief in the future coming of a savior to save people, there is a difference in the portrayal of the savior between the hadith records and the Buddhist sutras in Chinese. Mahdi is not hesitant to use armed force if necessary to create a new social order, while Maitreya offers spiritual guidance for people to attain awakening. This difference reflects the characteristics of each of these religions, but in light of the historical backgrounds behind them, it is obvious that Buddhism, like Islam, can be turned into the ideo- logical backbone of social reform movements, in spite of its emphasis on spirituality.     Chapter 12 Maitreya, Crop Circles, and the Age of Light: Benjamin Creme’s UFO Thought Lukas Pokorny 12.1 Introduction A staunch flagbearer of Theosophical thought specifically indebted to Alice Ann Bailey (1880–1949), Benjamin “Ben” Creme (1922–2016) was one of the major protagonists of the New Age. He is particularly remembered as chief pop- ulariser of the esoteric Maitreya narrative. The related millenarian programme as advocated by Creme (cf. Pokorny 2021) highlights the vitally important role played by humankind’s “Space Brothers.” This chapter focuses on them and the wider ufological context in Creme’s teachings.1 Born on 5 December 1922, into a Jewish-Catholic family as the second, and only boy, of three children in Glasgow,2 Creme—by his own account—early on attracted the attention of the “Hierarchy” and, in particular, his later unnamed Master.3 Already as a teenager he was resolved to become a painter, a career path that was allegedly prompted by the Hierarchy. He married Peggy (d. 1965) and, following the end of World War II, relocated to London, where he resumed his artistic activities 1 The existing scholarship on Creme is scarce. THE infinite Compassion of the Buddha, the flaming Love of the man of Nazareth, is an old new quahty common to all Social Reformers or Saviors, a selfless emotion which by its beau- tiful might makes irrelevant and trifling distinctions between per- sons expressing it. Yet contrasts between these great lovers, Gautama and Jesus, are marked. Who was Gautama? A man living 500 years before the Chris- tian era who after spiritual apprenticeship, fasts and questings, be- came the Buddha, Enlightened, and preached a doctrine which transformed India of that time into a heaven of blessedness and harmony,—a doctrine which as its founder prophesied endured for 500 years. Who was Jesus? Some say he was the Maitreya, the future incarnation or expression of the Buddha—the next Buddha, Ari- madeya. This is unlikely since Gautama's dispensation yet has 2500 years to run and since Jesus was not the Buddha type. Buddha had his Judas, who the Burmese call Dewadat, who even claimed to be the real Teacher and who tried in various ways to betray and destroy Gautama. Some hold Jesus to be the expression of this man, since the religion sprung up from Jesus' works has endeavored unceasingly to betray Buddhism. The Siamese speak of the evil Dewadat as the God of Europe and the cause of all the evil in this world. In truth, the mission of the white-skin has been one of con- quest, pillage, and destruction. In contrast to the more loving Oriental, his life has been as that of a carnivorous animal, murder- ous, cruel, vindictive, wantonly destructive of all life—animal, vegetable and mineral—heedles^ of others' good and hence of his 482 THE OPEN' COURT.
