ROW ONEC NEWS END–OF–SEASON EDITION December 2017 ROW ONEC NEWS END–OF–SEASON EDITION December 2017 ONEC AGM A new board of directors was installed at ONEC’s AGM and their roles were determined at the first board meeting. These are your 2018 board members: President Mike Hardstaff Vice-President Brigit Knecht Secretary Susan Smith Treasurer Ed Doe Rowing Director Richard Vincent Tennis Director Andre Barnes Sailing Director Neil Baisi Boathouse Director Mike Hardstaff Human Resources Mary Clark Marketing and Communications Claire Schofield Director at large Meghan Hanlon Director at large John Spika Manager Bernie Desrosiers BOATS UP: Thanks to all who showed up to help us move the boats into the ballroom. They are now all safely tucked away for the winter, dreaming of their next season on the water. STEPPING UP: Thanks to all volunteers who helped to bring boats up, bring in the docks, and lower the ramps. This is clearly a case of people stepping up. People have stepped up in other ways too. Rowers Brigit Knecht, Susan Smith, and John Spika (alongside Richard Vincent who remains as Rowing Director) joined the ONEC Board. Mike Hardstaff, Boathouse Director, is the new ONEC President. Sherry Dolan, John Moore, and Claire Schofield have joined the Rowing Consultation Committee, while Liane Bell has stepped up to be Chair of this committee. Louise Smith will be contributing at the Touring committee and Canadian Sculling Marathon. (The Touring Committee continues under the able steering of Joan Robertson and Liane Bell.) Other people are volunteering to work on summer programming and to run winter sports programs. Thanks to everyone who is helping to make ONEC Ottawa’s Waterfront Sports Centre. Richard Vincent, Rowing Director BOATHOUSE The Boathouse has been closed and winterized for this season. Prior to this work being completed, Cundell Plumbing and Heating Ltd. was engaged to winterize the sewage and water systems. In the past this was done by volunteers, but given the complexity of the systems, particularly the sewage tanks, it was decided that this work should be done professionally by Cundell who had repaired the system after last Spring's flood damage. We continue to work with Ottawa Fire Services to satisfy their requirements for increased occupancy for the building. There is additional work that needs to be done to render the deck running around the west and south side of the main floor acceptable as a second egress in the event of fire. The extent of this work, the cost, and whether the NCC will cover the cost is still in discussion. More information will be available when everything is finalized. It appears the project to replace the steps leading from the Parkway down to the bridge will be proceeding. While the NCC will be funding this project, the timing of the construction has not been confirmed. Mike Hardstaff, boathouse director, wants to thank all the volunteers from both rowing and sailing who worked hard to secure the Boathouse and all the docks for the winter. Without their commitment, this work would not get done. JANUARY ERGING CHALLENGE For more than a decade ONEC has entered a team in the annual Concept 2 Virtual Team Challenge (VTC) which runs from January 1 to 31. Last year our team of 17 rowers compiled 1,856,781 meters. Alistair Hensler, is recruiting a team now. If you own a rowing machine of any make or model or have access to one, you are welcome to join. It is a great way to keep in “rowing” shape in the off-season. There are no limits on the number of participants on a team so if you want to maintain that rowing momentum, help us rack up some meters for ONEC. WINTER ACTIVITIES The boats may have been put away but ONEC Rowing doesn’t stop during the winter! Stay in shape and have some fun with our Winter Programs. Here are some cross-training options for you to consider (subject to snow and weather conditions): If interested in these activities, please email the organizer to be added to their contact list. Cross Country Skiing Fridays at 10a.m. from January 5, 2018 Social ski outing for intermediate level skiers. We'll begin by meeting at P10, but may try different trails on subsequent Fridays.
