Supervisors: Börjeson, Lowe and Kinlund, Peter Language: English Abstract While previous research on African smallholder agriculture has been criticized of focusing on the sole factor of population pressure as driver of agricultural degradation or intensification, the present study tries to nuance this debate by providing empirically grounded research, exploring the dynamics behind local agro-ecological change. The thesis specifically studies the dynamics behind small-scale farmers’ crop choices in relation to their management of trees in cropland in Gera District, Ethiopia. Drawing on situated landscape interviews and focus group discussions with farmers combined with observations and interviews with agriculture officials, a contextual understanding of local agro-ecological processes emerged. While political ecology was used as an overarching framework, the concept of landesque capital served as an analytical tool to explore how external and local forces interact at the point of the land management decision. It was found that external factors sometimes have a reinforcing effect at the local scale, but when top-down interventions are incoherent with bottom-up priorities, a conflict occurs. In this way, local dynamics and external drivers constitute an interacting dialectic, with a set of unintentional synergies and trade-offs eventually forming agro-ecological landscape change. The territorial expansion of emperor Menelik (r. 1889 –1913), political stability and effective centralization and bureaucratization of government brought relative acceleration of the pace of urbanization in Ethiopia; the improvement of the system of transportation and communication are identified as factors that contributed to this new phase of urban development. Central government expansion to the south led to the appearance of garrison centers which gradually developed to small- sized urban center or Katama. The garrison were established either on already existing settlements or on fresh sites and also physically they were situated on hill tops. Consequently, Limmu Genet town was founded on the former Limmu Ennarya state‘s territory as a result of the territorial expansion of the central government and system of administration. Although the history of the town and its people trace many year back to the present, no historical study has been conducted on. The level of adoption of coffee production technologies, obstacles for wide adoption of technologies are not yet conducted and there is no genuine information. Both primary and secondary data were used to generate the required information. Three-stage sampling technique was used to generate primary data from 141 smallholder farmers. Respondents were selected by simple random method. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean, maximum, minimum and cross tabulation by using SPSS software package. The finding showed that small holder farmers have garden coffee, forest coffee and semi forest coffee which are 32.62%, 15%, 14% and 38.8 % of them have combination of the three coffee farm type respectively. Further, this study showed that selection/CBD resistance, Hybrid and specialty coffee varieties are adopted in the study areas which are 39.86%, 6.52%, 12.32% and 41.3% of the farmers have combination of the three coffee varieties respectively. However, level of adoption of hybrid and specialty coffee varieties are very low.

This study analyzes technical efficiency and determinants of the efficiency of honey production in the Gomma and Gera districts of the Jimma zone. The data were ob- tained from 194 randomly selected honey-producing smallholder farmers. A Cobb – Douglas stochastic frontier production analysis with the inefficiency effect model was used to estimate technical efficiency and identify the determinants of efficiency variations among honey farm- ers. The study showed that several hives and supplementary feeds positively and significantly influenced honey yield. This shows that there is room to increase honey productivity from the current level if farmers can efficiently use these input variables. The result further showed that there were differences in technical efficiency among honey producers in the study area. The discrepancy ratio, γ, which measures the relative deviation of output from the frontier level due to inefficiency, was about 84%. This implies that about 84% of the variation in ho- ney output among the farmers was attributed to technical inefficiency effects. The estimated mean level of technical efficiency of honey producers was about 74%. This reveals that there is a possibility to increase the level of honey output by about 26% through exploiting the exis- ting local practices and technical knowledge of the relatively efficient farmers.
