DOI: 10.4119/seejph-3963 Abstract Background: Kurnool, one of the four districts in the Rayalaseema region of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, emerged as a COVID-19 hotspot by mid-April 2020. Method: The authors compiled the publicly available information on different public health measures in Kurnool district and related them to the progression of COVID-19 from March to May 2020. Results: Two surges in pandemic progression of COVID-19 were recorded in Kurnool. The ini- tial upsurge in cases was attributed to return of people from other Indian states, along with return of participants of a religious congregation in Delhi, followed by in-migration of workers and truckers from other states and other districts of Andhra Pradesh, particularly from the state of Maharashtra (one of the worst affected states in India) and Chennai (the Koyambedu wholesale market - epicenter of the largest cluster of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu). -

Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

Situation Report Floods in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
SITUATION REPORT FLOODS IN ANDHRA PRADESH AND KARNATAKA OVERALL SITUATION Heavy rains due to depression in the Bay of Bengal and low pressure from the Arabian Sea from Sep tember 29 to October 2 have caused flash floods in north Karnataka and the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, affecting nearly two million people and claiming 210 lives. In Karnataka, 15 districts are affected and 161 people have perished. In Andhra Pradesh, five districts were hit by the flash flood and 49 people have lost their lives. However, of the two million, 1.4 million people affected are from Andhra Pradesh. The persistent presence of cyclonic winds over the Bay of Bengal and their movement towards the Deccan Plateau led to heavy downpour in the perennially drought -prone districts of north Karnataka for the first time in 60 years. Discharge of waters from three dams a cross the major rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra in Karnataka inundated several villages and towns across the region in the neighbouring states. The worst affected by the downpour and floods were parts of Bijapur, Gulbarga and Raichur districts in Karnataka and Mahbubnagar and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh through which flow the rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra along with their tributaries. According to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, the unprecedented inflow of river Krishna at the Srisailam dam in Kurnool dist rict has broken all the past records as it touched a peak of 2.5 million cusecs compared to previous highest inflow of 0.97 million cusecs in 1967. Rail and road transport were affected in the rain -hit districts of both the states. -

ABSTRACT: 1.SRI SURYANARAYANA TEMPLE(Sun God) :- The sun god temple natively known as Sri Suryanarayana Temple is located in Nandikotkur, 28 K.M. from Kurnool (District). It is the only second temple in the State of Andhra Pradesh. The first temple is located in Arasavelli of Srikakulam district. The temple at Nandikotkur was built by Chalukya kings in 1080A.D. when they ruled Altamura. It was renovated in 1996 by Sri Mallikaaaarjuna Rao. 2.Sri Tharthur Ranganatha Swamy Temple: Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple is located in Tharthur of Bunglow Mandal, Kurnool District, which is 40 K.M from Kurnool city. History of the Temple: In 13th century the Kakatiya Emperor Prathapa Rudra Deva gifted Nandikotkur region to Sirisingadeva who was the then army chief of Kakaatiya Empire. Then this region was call Navanandikotkur and later on it took the name of Nandikotkur during this time Siriasingadeva kept his relatives and friends as guardians to the place, Atmakur, parumanchala, Lingapuram ,Byrapuram and Beeravolu Later in course of time, The Idol of Suryanarayana God( Sun God) was little damaged. -

Kavitha and M.V.S.Naidu Department of Soil Science &Agricultural Chemistry, S.V. Agricultural College Tirupati-517502 ABSTRACT Soil fertility parameters viz., pH, electrical conductivity (EC), available macronutrients and micronutrients were determined in one hundred and fifty seven soil samples in Agricultural college farm, Mahanandi. Based on the data maps were prepared in GIS environment using ArcGIS 9.3.1. Soils are neutral to moderately alkaline (7.00 to 8.10) in reaction, and non-saline. The organic carbon content was low to high (0.02 to 0.77 %). In the study area the available nitrogen content was low to medium (50.18 to 388.86 kg ha-1) while available phosphorus was low to high (2.23 to 62.37 kg P2O5 ha-1) and the available potassium content was high (361.20 to 1117.54 kg ha-1). The availability of sulphur and the micronutrients Zn, Cu and Fe are in deficient to sufficient range while manganese is in sufficient range. Based on the overall assessment, the nutrient status in these soils was optimum.
