My thesis aims to revitalize the study of a significant figure such as Alfonso de Palencia, one of the active bureaucrats and men of letters who served as intermediaries between Italian and Spanish humanists in the Quattrocento. During his stay in Rome and Florence he became acquainted with some of the most important scholars of the time and acquired a range of skills that had a crucial bearing on his personal and professional development. It was during these formative years in Italy that Palencia assimilated the civic Humanism, a modality of Humanism that sought to learn from antiquity by looking upon it as an exemplary parallel to the present, and endeavored to give young men the type of education best suited to their becoming responsible members of their society and state. iv In order to recover Alfonso de Palencia’s contributions to Humanism, I have elaborated an annotated critical edition of his moral treatise entitled Batalla campal de los perros contra los lobos, written in 1457. A manuscript copy of the text has not been preserved, but the work has survived in a single copy of the edition printed in Seville in 1490 by the “Cuatro Compañeros Alemanes” that is currently housed in the Biblioteca Real de Palacio, in Madrid, Spain. Since Palencia lived most of his life in Seville, it is safe to assume that he supervised the printing of his work. In this study I have gathered all the information available up to date and have added new findings that surfaced during the course of my research. This edition presents, along with the incunabulum text with explanatory footnotes and a glossary, an extensive preliminary study that contains a description of the times and the socio-cultural conditions in which the treatise was written, a biography of the author, an account of his works along with a critical assessment, a detailed analysis of La batalla campal with an examination of the fable structure, a report of the author’s literary sources, a rhetorical study, and a record of the reception of the treatise and its modern interpretation. v A Sharina Todo vi AGRADECIMIENTOS El origen de esta tesis doctoral se remonta a una amena conversación con Marta Albalá y con Miguel Martínez en la biblioteca del Graduate Center. CENTERS OF MARGINALITY IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY CASTILE: CRITICAL REEVALUATIONS OF ENRIQUE IV DE TRASTÁMARA, LEONOR LÓPEZ DE CÓRDOBA, AND ALFONSO DE CARTAGENA by BYRON H. WARNER, III (Under the Direction of Noel Fallows) ABSTRACT The concepts of center and periphery are not always mutually exclusive; one often resides within the other. This idea is central to my critical evaluations of three historical personages of fifteenth-century Castile: Enrique IV de Trastámara, doña Leonor López de Córdoba, and Alfonso de Cartagena. Each of these figures had a central political function in the kingdom, yet each also lived a dual existence at the margins of Castilian court. In this dissertation, this duality is examined using a combination of historical sources and contemporary psychology. Certain nuances in the historiographical genre of the Castilian chronicle of the fifteenth century stand out as distinct from the chronicle of previous centuries. One of these is the liberal addition of personal commentary by the chroniclers themselves, breaking to a degree with the paradigm of unadorned, historical “fact-telling.” These personal and often politically charged opinions have significantly contributed to the polarization of modern interpretations of the events and people described in these histories. The incorporation of recent psychological research allows for new readings of the chronicles and new interpretations of the mysteries surrounding Enrique IV, Leonor López, and Alfonso de Cartagena. SHADOW OF THE KING: PRIVANZA AND PERCEPTIONS OF ROYAL POWER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY SPANISH THEATER by CARL AUSTIN WISE (Under the Direction of Elizabeth R. Wright) ABSTRACT Privanza, a political institution in which the monarch relinquishes his authority to a favorite, brings the concept of subjectivity to the forefront in seventeenth-century Spain by introducing questions of manipulation, control, and self-representation. Using theater as means of exploring political favoritism, seventeenth-century playwrights Lope de Vega and Antonio Mira de Amescua present privanza as a test against a king’s ability to maintain his autonomy against an institution which, it was thought, owed its very existence to a courtier’s ability to manipulate the monarch into submission. Lope and Mira internalize this struggle and offer scenarios in which the kings voluntarily hand themselves over to bondage. By presenting a series of week kings who allow their voluntades to become enslaved, the playwrights suggest that the monarch’s true power emanates from his ability to recognize and to control his internal self. Privanza, however, proves to be a constant danger to a king’s efforts to realize this potential, and offers example after example of kings who fail to enforce their own autonomy. • Alfonso De Palencia Y El Humanismo Italiano
Palabras clave: Alfonso de Palencia, recepción humanismo italiano Alfonso de Palencia and the Italian Humanism ABSTRACT The relationship of the chronicler Alfonso de Palencia to the Italian Humanism has been emphasized several times. His academic training in Florence and Rome, his literary interest in the recovery of classical authors, particularly historians from the Roman period, and his contacts with some Italian humanists are well known although they are still lacking a more careful research. This paper deals with Palencia’s Byzantines and Italian acquaintances, it clarifies some episodes of Palencia’s life and points to some names that had so far gone unnoticed by the critics.

Queenship is a transnational theme across these two territories in early modern Europe, and influenced the concept of rule for future monarchs. Isabel I of Castile (r. 1474-1504) and Mary I of England (r. 1553-1558) were two early modern monarchs who inherited the throne in their own right as queen regnants. Isabel was the grandmother of Mary I. Isabel married Fernando II of Aragón (r. 1479-1516), and the two had five children: Isabel, Juan, Juana, Maria, and Katherine. Their youngest, Katherine of Aragon, married King Henry VIII of England; they named their first and only child Mary.1 Although Mary was the first queen regnant of England, she could look to her Castilian grandmother as a precedent.

Spanish Society, 1348–1700 Beginning with the Black Death in 1348 and extending through to the demise of Habsburg rule in 1700, this second edition of Spanish Society, 1348–1700 has been expanded to provide a wide and compelling explora- tion of Spain’s transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. Each chapter builds on the frst edition by offering new evidence of the changes in Spain’s social structure between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. Every part of society is examined, culminating in a fnal section that is entirely new to the second edition and presents the changing social practices of the period, particularly in response to the growing crises facing Spain as it moved into the seventeenth century. Also new to this edition is a consideration of the social meaning of culture, specifcally the presence of Hermetic themes and of magical elements in Golden Age literature and Cervantes’s Don Quijote. Through the extensive use of case studies, historical examples and literary extracts, Spanish Society is an ideal way for students to gain direct access to this captivating period. Teoflo F. QUEEN ISABELLA AND THE SPANISH INQUISITION 1478-1505 by LORI NYKANEN A thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Honors in the Major Program in History in the College of Arts and Humanities And in The Burnett Honors College Of the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Fall Term 2014 Thesis Chair: Peter L. Larson ABSTRACT Queen Isabella (1451-1505) daughter of King John II of Castile and Queen Isabella of Portugal has been accredited for some of the most famous accomplishments of medieval Spain. Through her succession to the Castilian throne in 1479 Isabella created a secular government, which enabled her to restore the monarch’s power and wealth, and gave her a wide reaching authority over her kingdom. The Queen, being a pious Catholic, reestablished Catholicism as the official religion of Castile and brought forward a tribunal to help her reinforce her desires for sincere Christian piousness and to bring retribution to those who were heretical and insincere in their new conversions to the Catholic faith. This Spanish tribunal was established in 1478, blessed by Pope Sixtus IV, and would eventually become infamously known as the Black Legend or the Spanish Inquisition. Through the disguise of a religious tribunal the Queen’s Inquisition performed a duel purpose; acting as a secret police with long reaching tentacles that created as much fear and terror to the kingdom as its tribunal Auto de Fe’s. The social-religious context of Castilian life changed drastically underneath Isabella’s Inquisition, whose direct influence caused the Jewish population to faltered and be ultimately expelled in 1492.

Chivalry and Crisis at the Court of Juan II of Castile: The Chivalric Writing of Alonso de Cartagena and his Contemporaries. This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. August 2016 James Michael Ellis Trinity Hall 2 3 Declaration This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It is not substantially the same as any that I have submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for a degree or diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution, except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It does not exceed the prescribed word limit for the relevant Degree Committee. 4 5 Abstract This study addresses chivalric writing and court culture during the reign of Juan II of Castile and aims to examine the changing chivalric ideal in Castile during this turbulent period of Castilian history. My thesis argues that political crisis in Castile led to a corresponding crisis in Castilian chivalry as commentators at the royal court tried to correct the failings of the Castilian nobility. The study is based around the work of Alonso de Cartagena, an esteemed diplomat, translator and the Bishop of Burgos in the latter years of Juan II’s reign.

  • The Fall of Granada in Hall's and Holinshed's Chronicles
chapter 6 The Fall of Granada in Hall’s and Holinshed’s Chronicles: Genesis, Propaganda, and Reception Tamara Pérez-Fernández The fall of Granada was the culmination of the long process of Christian- isation of Al-Andalus, the endpoint of a Reconquista whose very existence is barbed with ambiguities.1 The significance of the fall of the last Nasrid kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula went beyond a military victory to become a corner- stone of the Spanish national identity for centuries to come, and the linchpin of the Catholic Monarchs’ plans for a cultural and religious homogeneity that has in recent times been questioned and that had an impact on the idea of Spain that was postulated during Francisco Franco’s regime. In part, this tran- scendence was shaped and perpetuated by the discourse that was created at the Christian encampment of Santa Fe in the aftermath of the surrender of the city. In this chapter, I intend to explore the genesis of the discourse that rose from the conquest of Granada and its dissemination throughout Europe before embarking on a study of its reception in England through an analysis of the accounts of the events in Granada in two of the most important chronicles written in England in the sixteenth century: Edward Hall’s The Union of the Two Noble and Illustre Families of Lancaster and York and Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland. These texts offer a fascinating example of the reception of news from Spain in the sixteenth century, a period when Anglo-Spanish relations fluctuated between cordiality and outright animos- ity.
