BRINGING ETHNOGRAPHY HOME: KNUT HJALMAR STOLPE’S WORK IN PERU (1884) Ellen FitzSimmons Steinberg Jack H. Prost University of Illinois at Chicago INTRODUCTION Stübel. Their intent was to document the tombs before the Necropolis was totally destroyed. The Ancón, on Peru’s central coast, is one of the results of their 1875 excavation were originally most explored, excavated, and plundered sites published between 1880 and 1887 in 15 volumes in that country. ANTHROPOGENIC CHANGE IN THE LANDSCAPES OF HIGHLAND ECUADOR* FAUSTO 0. SARMIENTO ABSTRACT. The anthropogenii nature of Andean ecosystems is discussed in the framework of tree-line dynamics in selected sites in Ecuador. Indicators of human impact are evidence of the need for a scientific understanding of neotropical mountains that is better in tune with the special conditions of tropical Andean environments. Tropandean systems are neither tropical ecosystems nor midlatitude regions, and lessons from ecologically damaging activi- ties in those ecosystems cannot be transferred readily to Tropandean systems. Better research from the ethnobiological and ecological fronts is needed if we are to comprehend the intri- cate functions of neotropical mountains, particularly the cloud-forest belt, which is regarded as the most threatened ecosystem when considering sustainability scenarios. Today’s TMCF landscape in fact reflects two tree lines: an upper one that correlates with the extension of grazing into the colder, higher reaches, which reduces the area of TMCFS from above; and a lower one that correlates with the ascending intensification of cropland agriculture -

Centrándose, sobre todo, en el comercio de larga distancia del 'spondylus', material encontrado en tantos sitios peruanos, chilenos y ecuatorianos, y en la navegación marítima costeña en balsas grandes, relatada en fuentes históri- cas cercanas al tiempo de la Conquista, el "padre de la arqueología andina" quiere reconocer una gama de elementos estilísticos como "mayóides" y trata de reconstruir su procedencia mesoamericana vía América Central-Sur. Summary: This article outlines Max Uhle's archaeological research in the Andean and the Coastal regions of Ecuador, the numerous excavations and archaeological surveys done by him as well as his getting more and more convinced of his diffusionist point of view. The "father of Andean ar- chaeology's" argumentation is based, above all, on the one hand on long distance trade of Spondylus shells that had been found frequently at Peru- vian, Chilean and Ecuadorian sites, and on the other hand on rafting coastal waters on board of big "balsas"as it is reported by documentary sources from the conquest period. Certain stylistic elements had been interpreted by Uhle as beeing "mayoid" and he attempted to trace their way back through the Southern pan of Central America to Mesoamerica. This paper evaluates and discusses the arguments about historical and landscape geography. It examines the methodological problems in historical and landscape geography, and attempted to distinguish between historical and landscape geography on one hand and their relationship with the regional approach. The paper concludes by making a case for Historical and Landscape approaches to geographical synthesis, in order to place the geographical endeavour at the heart of environmental studies. Introduction Problems of methodology and sometimes of relevance or significance have tended to trouble geography and geographers more than any other discipline and its practitioners, than one can readily think of. Historical and Landscape approaches to the study of geography are issues that have loomed large in methodological discussions in geography. In this paper we examine the methodological problems in historical and landscape/cultural geography, and attempt to distinguish between historical geography and landscape/cultural geography, and their relationship with the regional approach. The paper evaluates and discusses the arguments about these approaches and makes a case for historical and landscape geography as paradigms to geography as a science of the environment. Geography and Historical Geography It has been questioned whether all geography is necessarily “historical geography” (Harts, 1982; Ogbonna, 1976). -

CHAPTER ONE On Scale The storerooms of the Harvard Peabody Museum are filled with towering totem poles and tent posts, elongated dugout and birch bark canoes, and massive casts of stelae. The collection is at once a sprawling repository of art and industry and a microcosmic encapsulation of it because of the teaching museum’s vast size relative to other institutions and the staggering quantity of objects humans have produced. Amid this panoply of evidence of the ways civilizations have thought and wrought, strived and thrived, a clutch of diminutive Andean artifacts raises outsized questions about the ways societies conceptualize, perceive, and interpret scale (PLATES 1 & 2). Because the objects are so small — only a few centimeters long — curators have augmented their size. They have been grouped together, nestled into foam supports, and placed inside larger boxes. Removing a gray-blue lid, many of the contents may look like silver-colored wires, perhaps sewing needles. But, lifting one for inspection, a lump of metal placed toward one end makes clear that this particular object could never pass through cloth (PLATE 3). Its design is not for carrying thread but to spin it in the first place. The object takes the form of a drop spindle; except, at merely 48-37-30/7167.2 9.8 cm long, it is only one-half to one-third the typical length. Because it is made from a precious silver alloy and not wood, it is twice as heavy as a fine, functional spindle. -

The term mountain geoecology was formalized by Carl Troll through the activities of the International GeographicalUNESCO Union (IGU). Troll’s initiative – leEOLSSd to the establishment of a “Commission on High-Altitude Geoecology” by the IGU in 1968, subsequently to become “Mountain Geoecology andSAMPLE Sustainable Development”. CHAPTERS During the early stages, efforts were concentrated on the physical aspects of comparative high-mountain research. Later, reflected in the change of the Commission’s name, the human component of the functioning and transformation of mountain ecosystems became central to the development of the sub-discipline. This encouraged a strong move into the applied aspects of mountain studies, including mountain hazards mapping, analysis of landscape change through time, and determination of the causes and downstream effects of environmental degradation.
