BRINGING ETHNOGRAPHY HOME: KNUT HJALMAR STOLPE’S WORK IN PERU (1884) Ellen FitzSimmons Steinberg Jack H. Prost University of Illinois at Chicago INTRODUCTION Stübel. Their intent was to document the tombs before the Necropolis was totally destroyed. The Ancón, on Peru’s central coast, is one of the results of their 1875 excavation were originally most explored, excavated, and plundered sites published between 1880 and 1887 in 15 volumes in that country. Butler May, 2016 iv ABSTRACT Selling Mexico highlights the importance of Cancún, Mexico‘s top international tourism resort, in modern Mexican history. It promotes a deeper understanding of Mexico‘s social, economic, and cultural history in the late twentieth century. In particular, this study focuses on the rise of mass middle-class tourism American tourism to Mexico between 1970 and 2000. It closely examines Cancún‘s central role in buttressing Mexico to its status as a regional tourism pioneer in the latter half of the twentieth century. More broadly, it also illuminates Mexico‘s leadership in tourism among countries in the Global South. -

During the summer of 1837 Christian Ludwig Gerling, a for- mer student of Carl Friedrich Gauß’s, organized the world wide first de- termination of the deflection of the vertical in longitude. From a mobile observatory at the Frauenberg near Marburg (Hesse) he measured the astronomical longitude difference between C.F. Gauß’s observatory at G¨ottingenand F.G.B. Nicolai's observatory at Mannheim within an er- ror of 000: 4. To achieve this precision he first used a series of light signals for synchronizing the observatory clocks and, second, he very carefully corrected for the varying reaction time of the observers. By comparing these astronomical results with the geodetic{determined longitude dif- ferences he had recently measured for the triangulation of Kurhessen, he was able to extract a combined value of the deflection of the vertical in longitude of G¨ottingenand Mannheim. His results closely agree with modern vertical deflection data. 1 Introduction The discussion about the figure of the earth and its determination was an open ques- tion for almost two thousand years, the sciences involved were geodesy, geography and astronomy. Without precise instruments the everyday experience suggested a flat, plane world, although ideas of a spherically shaped earth were known and ac- cepted even in the ancient world. Assuming that the easily observable daily motion of the stars is due to the rotation of the earth, the rotational axis can be used to define a celestial sphere; a coordinate system, where the stars' position is given by two angles. -

Telephone: (33) [0]1 58 35 71 88 Facsimile/ Fax: (33) [0]1 46 57 62 58 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract On the morning of November 1 st , 1755, the town of Lisbon was ruined by an earthquake, supplemented by a tsunami, inundating the lower town and harbour, and by a fire, lit by houses collapsing on kitchen fires, which raged for one week. At variance with Lisbon, the Spanish harbour-town of Cadiz was considered as miraculously saved, despite the fears reported in the descriptions: "the sea-flood raised fears that the town might be submerged." A classical estimate for the height of the tsunami wave there is 18 m. The study of a restricted selection of primary documentary sources, demonstrates that the tsunami was much weaker. It is difficult to assess how the now classical records have been altered with reference to the original letters, but one of the reasons is that the secretaries of the scientific institutions only used to put in the print abridged, or worse, synthesized versions of the communications from members. The average ground level in Cadiz is 11 m above mean sea-level. If the wave set-up had been about 19m, the engulfment of Cadiz would have left its name to the November 1 st , 1755, earthquake and tsunami, rather than the destruction of Lisbon. -

The Maritime Voyage of Jorge Juan to the Viceroyalty of Peru (1735-1746) Enrique Martínez-García — Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas* María Teresa Martínez-García — Kansas University** Translated into English (August 2012) One of the most famous scientific expeditions of the Enlightenment was carried out by a colorful group of French and Spanish scientists—including the new Spanish Navy lieutenants D. Jorge Juan y Santacilia (Novelda 1713-Madrid 1773) and D. Antonio de Ulloa y de la Torre-Giralt (Seville 1716-Isla de León 1795)—at the Royal Audience of Quito in the Viceroyalty of Peru between 1736 and 1744. There, the expedition conducted geodesic and astronomical observations to calculate a meridian arc associated with a degree in the Equator and to determine the shape of the Earth. The Royal Academy of Sciences of Paris, immersed in the debate between Cartesians (according to whom the earth was a spheroid elongated along the axis of rotation (as a "melon")) and Newtonians (for whom it was a spheroid flattened at the poles (as a "watermelon")), decided to resolve this dispute by comparing an arc measured near the Equator (in the Viceroyalty of Peru, present-day Ecuador) with another measured near the North Pole (in Lapland). The expedition to the Equator, which is the one that concerns us in this note, was led by Louis Godin (1704-1760), while Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) headed the expedition to Lapland. The knowledge of the shape and size of the Earth had great importance for the improvement of cartographic, geographic, and navigation techniques during that time. -

Taylor Submitted to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering on May 3, 2013 in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Archaeology and Materials ABSTRACT In both the Andean zone of South America and in Mesoamerica, copper-silver alloys were important in the production of thin, silver-colored sheet metal artifacts. This thesis examines the mechanical and physical properties of the copper-silver alloy system that are important to understanding why copper-silver alloys became central to the metallurgies that developed among prehistoric societies of the Andean zone and Western Mexico. These properties include their range of malleability, the microstructures behind their toughness, and the recrystallization and annealing behaviors that led to their development of silver-enriched surfaces. To determine these properties, a series of cold rolling, cold hammering, and annealing experiments were performed on five Cu-Ag alloys and pure copper. -

ABSTRACT: In the early 18th century the earth was recognised as having some ellipsoidal shape rather than a true sphere. Experts differed as to whether the ellipsoid was flattened at the Poles or the Equator. The French Academy of Sciences decided to settle the argument once and for all by sending one expedition to Lapland- as near to the Pole as possible; and another to Peru- as near to the Equator as possible. America, to carry out a range of scientific experiments that included the determination of the length of a seconds pendulum. He returned to Paris convinced that in Cayenne the pendulum needed to be 11 lines (2.8 mm) shorter there than in Paris to keep the same time. -
