Thinking Plague a History Of
What the press has said about: THINKING PLAGUE A HISTORY OF MADNESS CUNEIFORM 2003 lineup: Mike Johnson (guitars & such), Deborah Perry (singing), Dave Willey (bass guitar & accordions), David Shamrock (drums & percussion), Mark Harris (saxes, clarinet, flute), Matt Mitchell (piano, harmonium, synths) - Guests: Kent McLagan (acoustic bass), Jean Harrison (fiddle), Ron Miles (trumpet), David Kerman (drums and percussion), Leslie Jordan (voice), Mark McCoin (samples and various exotica) “It has been 20 years since Rock In Opposition ceased to exist as a movement in any official sense… Nevertheless, at its best this music can be stimulating and vital. It’s only RIO, but I like it. Carrying the torch for these avant Progressive refuseniks are Thinking Plague, part of a stateside Cow-inspired contingent including 5uu’s and Motor Totemist Guild. These groups have…produced some extraordinary work… Their music eschews the salon woodwinds and cellos of the European groups for a more traditional electric palette, and its driving, whirlwind climaxes show a marked influence of King Crimson and Yes, names to make their RIO granddaddies run screaming from the room. …this new album finds the group’s main writer Mike Johnson in [an] apocalyptic mood, layering the pale vocals of Deborah Perry into a huge choir of doom, her exquisitely twisted harmonies spinning tales of war, despair and redemption as the music becomes audaciously, perhaps absurdly, complex. … Thinking Plague are exciting and ridiculous in equal measure, as good Prog rock should be.” - Keith Moliné, Wire, Issue 239, January 2004 “Thinking Plague formed in 1983…after guitarist and main composer Mike Johnson answered a notice posted by Bob Drake for a guitarist into “Henry Cow, Yes, etc.” …these initial influences are still prominent in the group’s sound - along with King Crimson, Stravinsky, Ligeti, Art Bears, and Univers Zero. -

An Open Source Journal published through the Auspices of the Poison Pie Publishing House, Knoxville, Tennessee Editor-in-Chief: David J. Keffer† Mission Statement: The purpose of An International Journal of Exploratory Meta-Living is to provide a resource for the dissemination of creative works relevant to the subject of meta-living. The journal welcomes both academic and artistic exercises expressed in any medium capable of being transmitted through the physical mechanisms of the journal. Due consideration also will be given to submissions that do not conform to these mechanisms. The journal explicitly forbids the establishment of a regular publication schedule. Meta-Living: One useful avenue leading toward an understanding of the term meta-living is through analogy, particularly by considering meta-fiction. Wikipedia, the oracle of all contemporary knowledge, defines meta- fiction as “the literary term describing fictional writing that self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in posing questions about the relationship between fiction and reality, usually using irony and self-reflection.”1 By straight-forward analogy, meta-living is the existential term describing a manner of living that self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in posing questions about the relationship between existence and reality, using irony and self-reflection among other devices. These other devices include, but are not limited to, scientific inquiry, ontology, various theologisms, sophistry, rhetoric, tomfoolery, transcendental perspectivism and, of course, the omnipresent specter of post-existential relativism. 1https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metafiction, accessed 2014 April 16. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ilpo Väisänen (FIN) http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Sonic Together with Mika Vainio, Ilpo Väisänen was part of the Finnish duo Pan Sonic, one of the most ground-breaking and innovating projects in contemporary electronic music. In a musical form in which sequencing and recording music using computers is standard, the group was known for recording everything live, straight to DAT (Digital Audio Tape) using home-made and modified synthesizers and effect units. In December 2009 their split was announced. Mika and Ilpo will continue with their own solo projects. Ilpo’s former releases on his own label Kangaroo, a sub-label of Raster-Noton, have clearly shown his personal affinity with dub music. Actually he is also playing some kind of free- form noise with a tendency to drone with Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM) in the duo Angel. --- BIO Ilpo Väisänen: born in Kuopio, Finland, in 1963 studied flute at the conservatory as a young student studied visual arts and -

BAD 58 ALCHEMY 1 STEINER: ... Was sagen die Sirenen? -

Walls of Theory
NEWS Walls of theory NOISETHEORYNOISE#1, Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy, Middlesex University, 6 March 2004 oise is an unmapped continent, in comparison with which everything we recognize as music remains a parochial backwaterʼ, announced the organizers ‘Nof this conference. Disdaining ʻpostmodern academicismʼs ostentatious displays of theoretical chicʼ, noise will invent its own theory. With its large and attentive audience, NOISETHEORYNOISE certainly felt as though it had trapped a beast with life in it, as yet unpinned to the racks of either commerce or academe. The music/noise couplet did, however, allow speakers to rehearse the neo-Kantian paradoxes beloved of poststructural- ism, where knowledge is always tragic because it misses out on the unknown. Yet continental philosophy was not what brought in the hundred or so punters: it was Noise. Although definition is endlessly contestable, Radical Philosophy readers should be told that Noise emerged as a subgenre in the mid-1990s. Noise makes the apparatus of rock amplification the main event, displacing the song form (now demoted to ʻmere rockʼnʼrollʼ). Itʼs been particularly active in Japan. Finding shapes in random inkblots has a long history in oriental landscape painting and Japanese painters responded to abstract expressionism in a peculiarly pretty (or at least ʻnot uglyʼ) manner. The Japanese take on Noise is character- ized by a similar aestheticism: Merzbow and Keiji Haino have become celebrated exponents of Noise, with countless releases and many prestigious appearances. The Wire became house journal for the movement, and there are Noise sections in record shops. As Scanner informed us in his response at the end of the conference, Noise has arrived: it was recently granted a half-hour window on BBC Radio 1. -
