1 Tony's Musical Notes

Johann Sebastian Bach died more than 250 years ago – but his music did not die with him. (Actually, it very well might have, but that is a story outside of the scope of this article.)

There are few composers who claim a greater influence on western music and even fewer who could claim a greater influence on western church music.

Some people aren’t aware that J. S. Bach was a Lutheran! His music is so historically important and so spir- itually rich that Lutherans long ago dubbed him “the fifth evangelist.” Although he was engaged in writing in a variety of musical forms, most of his music was written for the church and the royal court in various German cities. The important markers of his church music are Lutheran theology and the congregational chorale.

Nowhere are Bach’s working with theology and the chorale more evident than in his church cantatas – he wrote one for every Sunday on the church calendar? The listener does not have to work very hard to hear a familiar melody in the opening movement - which is always a fantasia based on the hymn tune. The middle movements consists of recitative (sung dialogue) and arias (artful, complex music designed for a soloist). The final movement is usually a clear hymn-like setting of the chorale tune.

On Sunday, November 24 th at 6:00 p.m., Bach Vespers returns to St. Mark’s with the singing of “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern.” The hymntune will be familiar to worshippers at St. Mark’s as “O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright!” (ELW 308) and “O Holy Spirit, Enter In” (ELW 786). The cantata, written for the Feast of the Annunciation, will be sung in the context of a vespers service – Lutheran Even- ing Prayer. Bach’s music is often performed in concert settings and his motets (shorter pieces for choir) are often sung in church services, so this is a rather unique opportunity to hear a sacred cantata sung in the con- text of a Lutheran worship service. I do not know of any Lutheran churches in our area who present this great music of our Lutheran tradition in just this way. It has been more than twenty years since the first Bach Vespers service at St. Mark’s. This is a tradition we can be proud of.

The orchestra will be comprised of members of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the chorus will be drawn from our own congregation and the community.

Please make plans to attend this unique worship service and invite your friends! 2 Opportunities to Give... St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 75 th Anniversary Challenge Fund

As we begin our 75 th Anniversary year, we are announcing a chal- lenge for our congregation. Let’s make this a meaningful celebration by raising $ 50,000 over the next six months to provide funding for both na- tional (ELCA) and local outreach services. Contribute whatever you can when you can in the coming six months (ending with St. Mark’s Day 2014) by noting on your check or en- velope “75 th Anniversary Fund” and placing in the offering plate or send- ing to the church office. 50% of funds contributed will be designated for outreach determined by the Send Ministry Team. 50% will be used for the Organ Refurbishment and capital asset replacement. A sign indicating our progress has been placed in Hart Hall. Come and join the excitement as we announce our outreach projects!!!!

THE STEWING POT --- NOVEMBER---2013 • We are growing the seeds of faith for next year in Saint Mark’s garden. Have you responded? • As of this writing 65 pledges have been returned and a flower placed on the Narthex garden board for each pledge. This is a 43 percent rate of support. • Please include your seeds of faith into the plans for next year. Thank you to each of you who have publicly supported our church’s mission. • “Someone Else” is no longer a part of our congregation. Now is the time to remember all of the blessings God provides you each day and to respond in thankfulness. Uncle Stew Make the Holidays Special for a Child in Need

4 October 2013 Men In Mission

I am writing this article from the cool north. Thanks again to Ken Sohacki for coordinating this month's work and covering other work items while I am away.

There were 10 folks that gathered for breakfast and work this month. Pastor Hanson lead the prayer and then all sat down for a hearty breakfast cooked by Fred Schaible and Bill Daugherty.

Ken Sohacki coordinated the work effort on the Parsonage. The majority of the painting is completed at the house. The shutters were also hung. There is a little painting of trim in the rear that still needs to be done and perhaps can be done by a couple of volunteers before "winter" sets in. The monthly A/C filters were done and some faucets and lights were repaired during the next week.

This month's attendees: Erin Brown, Robert Brown, Max Cassella, Bill Daughtery, Pastor Tom, Eric Olsen, Fred Schaible, Ken Sohacki, Paige Sohacki, and Larry Tallman.

The next Men In Mission Workday is Saturday, November 2, 2013. The committee will put together the list of items that need to be done. There is always work to be done and anyone is invited to attend and lend a hand. Also, if you have time during the week and feel that you would like to do something, just ask. There are always small repairs and painting touch-up to be done.

The property committee thanks all who help on these workdays and at other times. It is a blessing to this congrega- tion to have so many folks willing to lend a hand to maintain these facilities.

God's work, our hands,

Bernie Giancola

FREE BABYSITTING

St. Mark's Youth Group is hosting two days of FREE Babysitting at St. Mark's to give parents time to Christmas shop, or just to have a day to themselves! Saturday, November 30 from 11a.m. - 4p.m. and Saturday December 7 from 9a.m. - 2p.m. Youth and Adults will be there to provide a fun time for your children including snacks, games, movies and more. Sign- up sheets will be posted at the beginning of November in the church and at the Ark so we can have an idea of how many children to plan for. Donations gladly accepted and will go towards youth ministry and service projects.

IS A STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY SEASON POSSIBLE?

The Intergenerational Fellowship Committee believes it is and is eager to provide suggestions on how to achieve it. Join us Saturday afternoon, November 23d from 3:00-5:00 in Fellowship Hall for our Christmas Craft and Cookie Carnival, (a.k.a. CCCC). Whether you are 5, 15, 55, or 85 there will be a variety of suggestions to help us move beyond the commercial hype that began before Halloween and find ways to make the Advent and Christmas seasons truly meaningful for us and our families.

There will be hands-on activities, such as making Advent wreaths, calendars, and decorations for the tree or the home or to give as gifts. There will also be demonstrations of craft items you might wish to make at home for Christmas giving. We will show you how to design and print your own computerized Christmas cards and how to recycle old cards into new ones.

If you are not into crafts, or have all the decorations you need, we hope you will join us for coffee, cookies and conversations with members of our church family. There will be sugar cookies for the children to decorate and krumkake and pfeffernusse and other ethnic treats for all. We will hear the story of St. Nicholas and reminisce about happy Christmases Past.

What you can do to help: Watch the weekly ROAR for more details; bring used Christmas cards to recycle (box in Hart Hall); start thinking of your favorite Christmas traditions to share.

Suggestions? Contact a Committee Member: Leslie Allen, Aleiza Batson, Jennifer Correa, Clara Giancola, Evan Harkrider, John Mumford, Bridget Pudimat or Marjorie Broward.

6 Celebrate the Season of Thanksgiving at the Empty Bowls Luncheon

Tickets are on sale NOW for the 29 th Annual Empty Bowls Luncheon presented by Bank of America and Winn-Dixie, Prime Osborn Convention Center, noon – 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013. This very special luncheon is an area Lutheran tradition to benefit the work of Lutheran Social Services’ Sec- ond Harvest North Florida food bank. Proceeds from the event will help Second Harvest get more than 24 million pounds of food to nearly 340,000 hungry and food-insecure people – 117,000 children and their parents, as well as seniors and many others. The Empty Bowls Luncheon is an easy way to begin solving hunger one bowl at a time. The $30 price of an individ- ual ticket includes a light lunch and ceramic bowl handcrafted by volunteers, but more importantly, it funds 210 meals for the hungry. Get a group from your church or civic organization together and sponsor a nonprofit table at the event for $300. Your church is a major physical and spiritual presence in its local community. Your support of Empty Bowls as part of your church makes a strong statement of faith to your neighbors. Encourage your company to sponsor a corporate table for $600 and make an even larger impact. Help the working population that may be struggling with hunger remain strong, productive members of our community .

For more information and to get tickets, see St. Mark’s members, Ted Carter (904) 880-1715, Al Voss (904) 223- 5919, or Jeanne Maszy (904) 396-3524. General admission tickets are $30 each; nonprofit tables are $300; corpo- rate tables are $600. Doors open at 11:00 AM, plenty of time to select your favorite bowl(s).
