Living The Dream Sunday the 16th May 2010 at 9am Mum Dad and I headed for Wagga for our first training session and team meeting. At 11.15am we started our warm-ups, with lots of talking between ourselves and getting to know each other and the coach. One and a half hours later we walked off the field puffing and full of confidence that we would perform well over the next four days of solid football at the PSSA footy carnival at the greater western Sydney, Blacktown oval. We were presented with all our clothing, football jumpers and gear. On our way to Sydney we stopped at Gundagai at the ‘Dog on a Tucker Box’ and I made a wish in the fountain! That night we stayed at Goulburn, and the next morning we headed to Sydney for another training session at 2 o’clock on the ovals we would be playing on. We trained for one hour, skills only. That night at the Rooty Hill RSL where my family and I stayed for the three nights I was in bed by 9.00pm, nervous but slept well.

Tuesday 8th - Day 1: The first day of the carnival I was still nervous but ready to play. We had to be there by 8.45am ready for our team photo and match to start at 10.00am against Sydney East on oval 2. We got off to a good start and scored the first goal and then they got the next to be level at quarter time. After that, the next three quarters we drew away to win by 30 points: 6-1 to 1-1 and this was the side that beat us last year and Riverina missed the final. This was the good start that we wanted. I performed well in top three on form, from the coaching staff. I played three quarters at centre half forward and the last quarter ruck rover. 1.00pm Tuesday the 18th, we lined up against last year’s premiers, MacKillop for our second game that day, and what a game it was! Goal for goal each quarter with us being in front all the game except for the last 15 seconds. We lost by 4 points:4-4 to 3-6 but we knew we weren’t far off the mark providing we didn’t lose another match. All the boys were still confident that we could pick up our game to the standard the coach knew we could play and cut out a few mistakes. That afternoon at 2.30 we went into the GWS conference centre and met Paul Kelly and Gary Ayers the manager of GWS. That is where I had my picture taken with Paul. Gary then said to dad, come down and watch the boys (Greater Western Sydney U21’S) train tonight. It was great to see the professionals do what they do. That night at 7.00pm I had a nice meal and one hour doing mathletics on a pay internet at the hotel. We were all in bed by 8.30pm.

Wednesday 19th - Day 2: We were up at 8am for breakfast and had to be at the ground by 1000 for a mock press conference with the Sydney Swans. Four rookies and Kieran Jack were on centre stage with us boys allowed to ask any questions we wished. The most questions were about Barry Hall and Gary Ablett and how hard the training was at this level. We then got changed ready for our third match of the tournament against Combined Independent Schools (CIS) at 12 noon. They were a big ,bustling side and it was a good tough match which we led all game and won by 8 points:5-1to 3-5.I had another good match and I was rated in the top 3,could I keep my momentum going as we were all starting to feel tired. I played on the ball and CHF, then ruck in the last quarter. Two hours later at 3pm we had to line up for our second game today against the biggest improved side of the tournament-Polding (Northern NSW and Sydney Combined Catholic Schools). They had a flying start with a goal in the first 30 seconds and we looked a little slow.Polding had the tallest ruckman in the competition at 6ft, and I was given the job in the ruck against him! I soon had to learn to jump higher and I gradually wore him down. Our side went on to win by 19 points: 5-4 to 2-3.I rucked all game and had my best game so far. Straight after the match we went shopping at Mount Druitt because Mum had been asked to get the presents for the Coaches. Dad said I could have KFC for tea –I was starving and this was a treat. We were back at our room by 6.30pm and watched Hey Hey it’s Saturday and had a good laugh. We were all asleep by 9.45pm, dreaming of the big day ahead.

Thursday 20th - Day 3: First semi-final against Sydney East started at 10 am on oval 2.Before the match the coach had worked out a side in which our positions had been finalised for the semi and the final. I was to ruck for the 2 matches today and we fired up as a team in these positions and won easily by 41 points:7-11 to 1-0.We looked good from the start and were never threatened. I rucked for 3qtrs and had a rest on the bench in the 4th-ready for the Grand Final. We had a light lunch and then Presentations to the coaches followed by a Team meeting and as a surprise a visit from Tom Harley from Geelong who had a word of encouragement to both sides. The siren sounded at 1pm as we ran out on the main oval to McKillop, the favourites, who beat us only 2 days ago! We were better prepared, had made changes and tackled this game with more endeavour. And win we did. We got away early with a lead of 2 goals in the first 5 minutes and they never really got into the game-remember this team were undefeated to this point. We won running away by 31 points: 7-3 to 1-2 and they got their only goal in the last 2 minutes. I had my best game of the tournament. When the siren went we ran into a huddle and embraced each of our team mates and soaked up the occasion, whilst the siren was still sounding. It was a GREAT GREAT feeling.

Presentation Time: First the runners up were presented with their banners, everyone who had been involved with the tournament was thanked. We then received our banners and had our photo taken with the Bob Bevan Cup as a team and then individually. Then came the announcement of the NSW State representative side. I was nervous as were all the players-had we done enough to get picked! The rest is history –my wish at the Dog on the Tucker Box had come true. We had to quickly get measured for our State rep uniforms and a Team meeting run by the State coach. We hit the road home at 4pm and finally arrived home at 11pm Thursday night. Boy was I proud and tired, and went to bed with a smile on my face.

I DREAMT THE DREAM –Ryan Garthwaite YR6. Thanks Mum and Dad for taking me to Sydney and helping me with this story. Also thanks to Hayley and Nanna for looking after all the animals whilst we were away.
