In conversation with forty-five first- and second-generation Russian intellectuals who relocated from Russia and the former Soviet Union, the researcher investigates transnational Russian identity through ethnographic, auto-ethnographic, and visual anthropology methods. Educated migrants from Russia who shared with the researcher a comparable epistemic universe and experiential perspective, and who were themselves experts on migration, discuss what it means to belong to global transnational diasporas, how they position themselves in historical contexts of migration, and what they hope to contribute to modern intellectual migrant narratives.

    Steve’s Film Festival Reviews for 2003 (With Comments About 2002) By Steve Munro Ratings !#%?$ An appalling piece of junk (new rating this year) 0 I walked out (rating unused in 2003) * I stayed to the bitter end (but probably shouldn’t have) ** Maybe worth seeing once *** Recommended **** First rate ***** Best of the festival The reviews are arranged in the order of viewing. Festival Main Title The main title gets more boring every year. All of the Festival posters this year have someone holding a film frame in front of them through which one can see the background. This image is transferred to the screen with a woman on a long wooden bridge whose rails and posts suggest/become frames on a film. By the second day, I was seriously bored with this, and astounded that the Festival has only prints of this with overexposed and out of focus titles. The only time I saw it properly was at digital projections. Universal Studios’ salute to the volunteers, on the other hand, was always warmly received even though it’s seen over and over again because the audience really appreciates the work the volunteers (and the Festival staff) do to make this whole thing possible. People’s Choice Trailer AGF has three trailers and one poster this year, all based on the concept that a character is trapped in a job other than his/her true desire. · The Poster: A teacher who would rather be in the movies has Dick, Jane and Spot in screenplay format on her blackboard. · A Private Eye really wants to be a director/cinematographer, and critiques his surveillance of a tryst while, presumably, the tearful husband watches on a camcorder’s monitor.

    Torontos: Representations of Toronto in Contemporary Canadian Literature by Will Smith Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. School of American & Canadian Studies September 2011 Abstract This thesis examines how representations of Toronto in contemporary Canadian literature engage with place and further an understanding of spatial innovation in literature. Acknowledging the Canadian critical tradition of discussing place and space, the thesis moves the focus away from conventional engagements with wilderness motifs and small town narratives. In this way the thesis can be seen to respond to the nascent critical movement that urges engagement with contemporary urban spaces in Canadian literature. Responding to the critical neglect of urban representation, and more particularly, representations of Toronto in Canadian literary criticism, this thesis examines Toronto as a complex and contradictory site of symbolic power across critical, political and popular discourses. Furthermore, this thesis repositions an understanding of Toronto by paying attention to literary texts which depict the city's negotiation of national, local and global forces. The thesis seeks to understand the multiplicity of the city in lived, perceived and conceived forms - seeing Toronto as Torontos. Questioning existing frameworks deployed in Canadian literary criticism, the thesis develops a unique methodology with which to approach the complex issues involved in literary writing about place, drawing on contemporary Canadian criticism and transnational approaches to critical literary geography. The central chapters focus on four texts from the twenty-first century, three novels and one collection of poetry, approaching each text with a critically informed spatial lens in order to draw out how engagements with Toronto develop spatial innovation within literature.

    Production Catalogue Production 1 Chair’s Note Chair’s Indelibly woven into the rich cultural heritage of the nation, the arts in their entirety make Ireland a better place to live. The Irish film, animation and TV industry forms a central part of the creative industries in Ireland. One only has to look back at the sense of pride throughout the country at Ireland’s Academy Awards® success this year to see how integral film has become to our nation’s cultural identity. Film offers us audiovisual narratives, not only ones that mirror our lives and tell our past and present stories, but also narratives that look to new and exciting imaginings and futures. But it is not just the contribution of film to our intellectual, social and cultural life that is important; there are huge employment opportunities in the industries — opportunities for talented people in film, television, animation, and creative computer games. This year we launched our five-year strategy ‘Building on Success’ — detailing our ambitious vision and plans for the role of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) within the thriving Irish film, animation and TV industry. We also welcomed a much-needed increase in funding for 2017 to meet the need to support and develop the next generation of storytellers and filmmakers. However, we remain ambitious for the sector and we will continue to call for restoration of funding to pre-recession levels. The more grounded and authentic, the more they get beneath my skin. I grew up watching STAR WARS as much as Michael Haneke so I’d like to think I have pretty diverse tastes, but I find nothing more satisfying than a movie that can lure you in with the promise of genre then blow your mind with surprise, like a cinematic Trojan Horse. I see LAVENDER as a puzzle without a box; a protagonist blindly struggling to piece together a picture she cannot see. And we, the audience, stumbling through the dark, trying to solve the mystery alongside her.
