Some of these plants have been inten- tionally introduced as ornamentals, as food crops, or for other eco- nomic purposes – others may have arrived rather unintenionally with grain, wool, or other goods. This exhibition displays the diversity of neophytes with their various kinds of impacts, whether positive and/ or negative. In cooperation with BioFrankfurt e. With special thanks and appreciation to our partners for welcome support: EXCITING PLANTS Frankfurt‘s Palmengarten holds vast collections of plants that are unique and that rank highly among botanical gardens world-wide. Here, we present some prominent examples of particularly note- worthy plants that our visitors may want to discover and admire in the different seasons throughout the year. SPRINGTIME Paeonia We grow a great variety of different peonies – both the herbaceous and shrubby kinds. Some of our herbaceous ones have flower diameters of up to 20 cm. Herbaceous Perennials Section and throughout the grounds Calliandra haematocephala The tropical red powder puff or fairy duster, as it is also called, is nota- ble for its many soft and red stamens that can get up to 7 cm long. Tropicarium: Monsoon and Trade Wind Forest Section SUMMER Kniphofia The torch lily (or red hot poker) prominently displays its bright- colored flower clusters. In South Africa, their copious nectar attracts sunbirds and sugarbirds. Grounds: Rock Garden, South Africa Section Gunnera tinctoria The monstrous spiny leaves of this South American perennial give the plant its uniquely archaic appearance. Though referred to as giant rhubarb or Chilean rhubarb, due to a slight resemblance, it is actually not at all related to our common edible rhubarb plant. Rock Garden Amorphophallus spp. Many different species of this group of arums are grown at the Palmengarten.Their huge flower stalks tend to release foul to putrid odors that serve to attract carrion flies and beetles as pollinators. Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum, bears the globally largest unbranched inflorescence that can attain up to 4 meters in height. AUTUMN Tricyrtis formosana These toad lilies are native to Thai- land and grow in damp, shady areas in rich soil. The pinkish flowers with their prominent patterns are over- topped by a uniquely branched style. Grounds, Asian Perennials Section Ananas comosus The leaves of pineapple plants form funnel-shaped tanks that retain rain water and nutrients. The flower stalks are cone-shaped with red to purple bracts, with inconspicuous white flowers in between. The flowers of commercially grown pineapple do not require pollination and their fruits are seedless. Tropicarium: bromeliad Section WINTER Coryanthes macrantha This South American bucket orchid is an epiphyte usually hosted on the branches of tropical trees. The strongly scented flowers are pollinated by male bees that collect this fragrance – as perfume, so to speak – to attract female bees. Tropicarium: Monsoon and Trade Wind Forest Section Kerriodoxa elegans The white elephant palm is endemic to Thailand. The underside of its huge fan-shaped fronds is grayish and hairy. The stem is short and stubby, leaves and flower stalks emerge from close to the ground. Tropicarium: Coastal and Mangrove Forest Section Hamamelis mollis The Chinese witch hazel is an early bloomer – in January it opens its fragrant yellow flowers with their long-stretched and thin petals that roll up when it gets real cold. In front of the Administartion building and other spots throughout the grounds of the Palmengarten BOTANICAL GARDEN The city of Frankfurt acquired the botanical Garden from the univer- sity of Frankfurt and administratively joined it to the Palmengarten in 2012. established through a foundation of Johann christian Sencken- berg in 1763, it celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2013. From 1914, the botanical Garden served the university for research and teaching with a focus on the vegetation of Central Europe, East Asia, and North america. Some 4000 species, many of which endangered, are cultivated and displayed on a surface of 7 acres. Our several unique biotopes are modelled to closely resemble natural settings.
