International Conference: Ancient Greece & Ancient Iran / Cross-Cultural encounters Athens 11-14 November 2006 Abstract Psychotropic plants on Achaemenid–style vessels Dr. Despina IGNATIADOU Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Greece Three important plants dominate the vegetal decoration of Achaemenid-style vessels: • The opium poppy or papaver somniferum. The petalled element on top of the seedpod is the inspiration for the creation of multi-petalled rosettes. They are usually called long petals and they are one of the most popular decorative elements. Their connection to an existing plant was not attempted until recently, as it was thought that those render a stylized imaginary flower. • The so-called lotus, but really a water-lily: o The white lotus or nymphaea alba. On the vessels appears the flower consisting of rounded petals with parallel ridges. o The blue-lotus or nymphaea caerulaea. On the vessels appears the flower consisting of pointed petals, often called lanceolate leaves. • The almond tree, represented by its fruits, usually called lobes instead of almonds. The three plants appear in a similar way on vessels fabricated in different workshops during the Achaemenid period, within and also outside the geographical boundaries of the Persian Empire. It is also important that they appear on the decoration of shallow and deep bowls, which are vessels used for libations or ritual drinking. They are not wide-range edible plants, on which the local populations would rely for survival. In that case they would have righteously gained their place in the decoration of valuable vessels. Moreover, they are plants which in the historical period grow only in certain parts of the ancient world, while their depiction is ubiquitous. -

Information given on the new species includes a taxonomic description and its affinity to Plectranthus asirensis L. A key to Plectranthus species of Saudi Arabia is provided, and the relationships of the species and the relevant morphological characters, particularly seed, pollen grains, trichomes, and anatomy of stem and leaf, are discussed. Pillai, P. Suresh, Gayatri Aggarwal, Gaurav Doshi and Vidhi Bhatia ABSTRACT The present investigation was intended to evaluate the toxicity of the methanolic leaf extract of Preeja G. Pillai, Gayatri Aggarwal, a traditionally used plant Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour) Spreng. Plant material was analysed for Gaurav Doshi and Vidhi Bhatia various pharmacognostical parameters as per WHO guidelines procedure i.e., foreign matter, Department of Pharmacology microscopical sections, loss on drying, water and alcoholic extractive values, Total ash, acid VES College of Pharmacy, soluble ash, heavy metals, phytochemical analysis and toxicity studies. Acute & Sub acute Mumbai, India toxicity of the methanolic extract was evaluated in albino mice (Female) after ingestions of the extract during one day (Acute model) and during 28days (sub acute model).The studies on sub P. Suresh acute toxicity reveals that no mortalities or evidence of adverse effects have been observed in Department of Pharmaceutics Albino mice following acute oral administration at the highest dose of 2000mg/kg crude extracts GITAM Institute of Pharmacy of Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour) Spreng. Similarly, in sub-acute toxicity study methanolic Visakhapatnam, India extract 200,400 mg/kg body wt of Plectranthus amboinicus did not cause any changes in hematological and biochemical parameters. Studies on histopathological examination of vital organs showed normal architecture suggesting no morphological disturbances. Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour) Spreng can be considered as safe as it did not cause either any lethality or adverse changes in the general behavior in mice. -

We suggest a method of constructing red numbers for plant species, in order to set priorities in con- servation policy. The red number is an additive index, summarising values of four parameters: 1. Rarity – The number of sites (1 km2) where the species is present. A rare species is defined when present in 0.5% of the area or less. 2. Declining rate and habitat vulnerability – Evaluate the decreasing rate in the number of sites and/or the destruction probability of the habitat. 3. Attractivity – the flower size and the probability of cutting or exploitation of the plant. 4. Distribution type – scoring endemic species and peripheral populations. The plant species of Israel were scored for the parameters of the red number. Three hundred and seventy (370) species, 16.15% of the Israeli flora entered into the “Red List” received red numbers above 6. “Post Mortem” analysis for the 34 extinct species of Israel revealed an average red number of 8.7, significantly higher than the average of the current red list. -

Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION Plectranthus, an Old World genus, is a group of herbaceous plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family and consists of about 350 known species distributed throughout summer rainfall areas of Africa, Madagascar, India, Australia, and a few of the Pacific islands (Van Jaarsveld, 2006). Plectranthus are mostly soft, low-growing semi-succulent to succulent herbs or shrubs, some with unusually beautiful tubular flowers ranging in color from blue, violet, white, and pink (Brits et al., 2001). The name Plectranthus literally means spurflower (plectron = spur and anthos = flower) and refers to the spur at the base of the corolla tube ofPlectranthus fruitico- sus. This species was the first plant in this genus to be described (Codd, 1975). This name is confusing because only a couple of the species in the genus have this spur. Plectranthus is a very diverse group of plants with some of the species converging into other genera. DNA studies are needed to clarify some of the taxonomic confu- sion within this genus. Plectranthus has been referred to as a “horticulturally neglected” genus (Van Jaarsveld, 2006) and many species of the commercially grown Plectranthus have had very little or no improvement via plant breeding. A small number of the south- ern African Plectranthus has been known and grown in the U.S.A. -

Effluent was collected from Ravi which is one of the highly polluted river as compared to other rivers in Pakistan. One of the major reason is industrial wastewater, which is disposed untreated in the Ravi which is a major threat for aquatic life and toxic for human health. It further reports that the water of Ravi river is contaminated with heavy metals like Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and Zn because their uptake by waterlily plants is an indication that these metals are responsible for polluting Ravi water and this issue need to be resolved on priority basis. In order to estimate the amount of heavy metals in waterlily, different tissues were processed for atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) which revealed that Cd and Cr (later being in high concentration) were significantly accumulated by waterlily roots, stem and leaves, however, roots were more responsive as compared with aerial parts. Other metals were accumulated in negligible amount in roots, and almost no uptake was reported by stems and leaves. -

Epiphytic diatoms on Nymphaea alba L. floating leaves during plant growing seasons in the oligo- trophic Sub-Mediterranean wetland Hutovo Blato, South Bosnia and Herzegovina, were investigated in 2003 and 2004. In total, 135 taxa (species and infraspecific taxa) of epiphytic diatoms were identified. Genera with the largest number of taxa were: Eunotia (14), Gomphonema (13), Cymbella and Navicula (9), Cyclotella (6), Diatoma and Nitzschia (5). Only three taxa were recorded in all samples: Brebissonia lance- olata, Eunotia arcus and Navicula radiosa. The most abundant taxa were Cocconeis placentula, Cyclotella comta, Eunotia arcus and Gomphonema longiceps.
