11 A message from Charles Roberts, the Rector

My Dear Friends,

How was your Easter? It was a little disappointing to read in the press over the Easter weekend in April that a significant number of people who claim the Christian faith do not, apparently, believe in the resurrection! Personally I’m not sure how that works, for the whole point of the Christian message depends on the resurrection. Without it we can hardly claim the Christian badge. By the same token we can’t have Easter (resurrection) without Good Friday (Christ’s death), and while our churches can be predictably busy on Easter Day, we often find them sadly empty on the preceding Friday. They used to say in Jesus’ time that of the two main religious parties, while the Pharisees did believe in resurrection, the Sadducees didn’t – which was why they were so sad-u-see!! That said, the Church makes the most of the Easter celebration, not just for one weekend, but for a full 50 days right through to the Ascension and Pentecost. So the month of May is a real celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We mark the Ascension of Jesus (his return to heaven and his Father) on the 25th May in our usual way at St Andrew’s Chew Magna with a short service on top of the tower at 7.30am. If you’ve never been come and join us, and enjoy the best view of the village you’ll get! More seriously this signals for us the ‘Kingship’ of Christ who is above and over all things in a real sense. Our bishop has called us to make the most of this particular ten days leading up to Pentecost by praying for God’s Kingdom to come on earth. The phrase is familiar enough to us from the Lord’s Prayer, but we can assume Jesus put it in because he thought it was important. So our churches will be joining together right across the Diocese for this “Thy Kingdom Come” prayer call, as we seek to really root our faith in God and see Him at work in our communities. The old adage PUSH (pray until something happens) really does work! I commend it to you for your prayers. One other event this month which is important concerns our Church Wardens. At the annual meetings we will have elected our wardens for the next 12 months. On the 16th May they will join the Archdeacon for his ‘Visitation’ at when they will be commissioned for this important role. Do please pray for our Church wardens, they carry a large area of responsibility in our churches, and give thanks for their willingness to do so. They deserve our support and encouragement. This will probably be Archdeacon Andy’s last official role in our area of the Archdeaconry before he retires in June. Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts

Filling Station at the Old Schoolroom, Chew Magna Thursday 25th May at 7.30pm. Charles Roberts will talk on The Kingdom

12 LETTER FROM OUR ASSOCIATE PRIEST, SANDY MUNDAY

Dear Neighbours, This is my first magazine letter following a lovely welcome to my husband and I at the church and village hall on the evening of Monday 3 April. Thank you to all of you who took part, we’re glad to be here and looking forward to getting to know you. We’ve just had a lovely Easter with the churches full of spring flowers and congregations celebrating new spir- itual life and hope offered to us all through Jesus and the world-changing events of the first Easter.

I am now licenced to the Lakeside Group team ministry, working particularly at Chew Stoke and Nempnett Thrubwell, and working from time to time in the other churches in the team: Chew Magna, , and Dundry. Other team members, particu- larly vicars Revd Charles Roberts and Revd Sandra Lovern and Readers (lay ministers) Mrs Margaret Masding and Mr Frank Turner have worked with the churchwardens and congrega- tions here during the vacancy to keep everything running well. I look forward to continuing that spirit of partnership and co-operation with local churches and organisations, including Chew Stoke Methodist Church and Chew Stoke Primary School, and getting out and about locally whilst living in Chew Stoke. .

The Archdeacon of Bath, The Ven. Andy Piggott, emphasised during my welcome service that I am licenced to work part-time for the church. We are all familiar with juggling our time these days and I will be doing that here, developing my private practice in counselling alongside my ministry. “How will that work?” some of you have asked. I have been juggling my time for many years, commuting and working in secular employment, qualifying and developing my counselling practice and serving as a vicar. I find the best approach is to con- centrate on what I can do rather than dwell on what I cannot. If I were to work 24 hours each day on 7 days each week, there would still be things I would fail to find time for, and I expect that it true for many of us. So I shall focus on what I can do in the time I have. The best time to contact me is between Monday evening and Wednesday afternoon. Then and at other times, I will get back to you when I am next available. My contact details are shown else- where in this magazine. Email is the best way to get in touch, and my phone number is also given for those of you who prefer to use that.

The people of Chew Stoke and Nempnett Thrubwell churches have been working well with part-time clergy for some years now. You have probably heard the saying that the only cer- tain things in life are death and taxes. I think “change” is also a certainty in life. At times it is easy to dwell on how things used to be, or how we would like to remember them, and it is good to have happy memories with which to look back. Alongside that, there is always change, much of which will go on to become “the good old days” in time. “Watch for the new thing I am going to do, it is happening already, do you not perceive it?” asks God in Isai- ah chapter 43 verse 19 (Good News Bible). Change was a constant in life back when the book of Isaiah was written, around 700 years before Jesus was born. Here we are now with Brexit approaching and a forthcoming general election. What is going to happen? Love, faith and hope are building blocks that can give us a path to follow in ever-changing times. From there we can look out for the new things and embrace them confidently while giving thanks for good times past and those who were part of them. Please join us in church or get in touch if you’d like to. With best wishes, Sandy

14 Nempnett Thrubwell Church working party

A very big Thankyou to the seven volunteers who spent a Saturday morning before Easter mowing, strimming and clearing the churchyard, and also cleaning and polishing inside the church. It was an excellent job and enjoyable when done with companionship. It meant that the church was looking at it's best when Sandy came for her first service with us, and it will make everybody's job easier through the summer.

please contact Gill Wring on 333720 or Alison Hoddell 332421 CHEW STOKE CHURCH HALL NEWS

Over the last four years the Church Hall has been overseen by Roy Ireson, who very ably supervised the renovation of the building and has been Chairman of the Management Committee, devoting a great deal of time and effort into his role. We are enormously grateful to him and have relied on his conscientious response to any issue during that time. Unfortunately, Roy has had health problems recently, including hospital treatment for his heart, so he has sensibly decided that he should now retire from the Committee. This means that the other volunteer committee members will need to re-think how we operate in order to keep the Church Hall welcoming and convenient for the whole community. We also need to ensure continuity as older members retire after long service. It would be great to have some younger people (over 18) with bright ideas and see some fresh faces around the table! If you would like to be part of the future of the Hall, either in managing the day-to-day run- ning or helping to plan social events, please get in touch with the Vice Chairman Val Anthony ([email protected]) / 331237, or any other committee member.

Easter Craft Day at Chew Stoke School You really know that Easter is here and that Spring has really and truly sprung, when the eggs are out and the tissue paper is rustling at Chew Stoke Church School. All this preparation is for the annual Easter Craft Day, which takes place during the last week of school, before the Easter holidays begin. Eggs are painted, cards are made and hats are decorated, not only by the children but by the parents and the staff as well. The Craft Day culminates in an ‘eggs-hibition’, of all the crafts and with each class’ exhibits judged, this year by Reverend Charles Roberts. It was certainly a cracking day! Pictured: Year 5, Fox Class with some of their exhibits at the Easter Craft Day Eggs-hibition!

Much to our surprise and delight we were awarded first prize in the competition held at the WI Group evening hosted by WI. The judges said they were impressed by the authenticity of our display and so our research into the 16th century proved very worth while. They complimented the banquet invitation on hand made paper made by Val Knight and marchpane apples made by Jan Osborne. Pat Peel had made lovely floral pieces which set off the hand made beeswax candles found by Hazel Wedlake. All in all this was a team effort and we had fun and came home once again with the little Art Deco silver vase.

The Craft Group held an afternoon learning how to press flowers and then made delightful greeting cards under the watchful eye of Denise Stirrup. The Walking Group was enchanted by the spring flowers and stream running through the bottom of Lord`s wood. The bluebells had not reached their peak but we saw Shirt Buttons, Golden Archangel, Jack in the Hedge and Sunspurge. We then went to Hunstrete and had lunch at the Hunters rest.

Next meeting - Wednesday 17th May 7.30pm Church Hall Chew Stoke. Update and discussion on the Resolutions for this year followed by a Beetle Drive.

We welcome visitors at meetings and events for a small charge. So do come along and see if the WI is for you! FFI contact Jan. 01275 472600 or Hazel 01275 332812

After 6 years as Chair of Harvest Home, Phil Heath will be stepping down from the role in 2017. The HH Committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Phil for all his time and efforts in keeping the tradition of the Harvest Home show alive whilst bringing new ideas and features to the event. Whilst some things like Mr Crane's dahlias, the largest marrow and cider in the beer tent have been Harvest Home staples for years and years, Phil has brought some 21st Century innovations to the show like a website, the backward steering bike, Battle of the Bands and resurrecting some old favourites in a modern way like the all-comers tug-of-war involving most of the village! Pulling together the organisation of Harvest Home requires varied talents and Phil has demonstrated many during his tenure : diplomacy and tact - (mostly when dealing with other committee members!), a keen eye on finance, (HH has donated over £10K to good causes under Phil’s leadership), crisis management – (when the ladies of Chew Stoke have drunk the bar dry of white wine!) and some very useful practical skills like wielding a mallet and reversing a trailer. Most of all, the role requires a lot of hard work and Phil has done this with enthusiasm and good spirit. The committee would also like to extend its thanks to Phil’s family who have supported him in the role. The celebration of Harvest Home in Chew Stoke dates back centuries and, as the name says, it originally celebrated the harvesting and storage of an ample supply of crops to feed the community throughout the winter. Today's Harvest Home maintains part of this important tradition by bringing villagers of all ages together to celebrate friendship and community. Harvest Home 2017 will be taking place on Saturday 9th September under the new Chair of Nick Baker. Volunteers to assist with organising and preparing for the event and helping out on the day are always very welcome. If you would like to get involved, please contact Nick on Tel : 01275 33753 / [email protected] or speak to any other committee members that you may know. Take a look at the website : www.harvesthome.org.uk

Harvest Home in the past - the Harvest Home committee is planning a History of Harvest Home montage for the show this year. This is an appeal for any pre-2010 photos, programmes, stories and anecdotes you may have of previous Harvest Home shows. Please contact Nick Baker. [email protected] / Tel. 01275 333753.
