Alternatively, call Constance Bowdler 332078 or Mary Sommerville 333572 11 A message from Charles Roberts, the Rector My Dear Friends, How was your Easter? It was a little disappointing to read in the press over the Easter weekend in April that a significant number of people who claim the Christian faith do not, apparently, believe in the resurrection! Personally I’m not sure how that works, for the whole point of the Christian message depends on the resurrection. Without it we can hardly claim the Christian badge. By the same token we can’t have Easter (resurrection) without Good Friday (Christ’s death), and while our churches can be predictably busy on Easter Day, we often find them sadly empty on the preceding Friday. They used to say in Jesus’ time that of the two main religious parties, while the Pharisees did believe in resurrection, the Sadducees didn’t – which was why they were so sad-u-see!! That said, the Church makes the most of the Easter celebration, not just for one weekend, but for a full 50 days right through to the Ascension and Pentecost. So the month of May is a real celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We mark the Ascension of Jesus (his return to heaven and his Father) on the 25th May in our usual way at St Andrew’s Chew Magna with a short service on top of the tower at 7.30am. If you’ve never been come and join us, and enjoy the best view of the village you’ll get! More seriously this signals for us the ‘Kingship’ of Christ who is above and over all things in a real sense. Our bishop has called us to make the most of this particular ten days leading up to Pentecost by praying for God’s Kingdom to come on earth. The phrase is familiar enough to us from the Lord’s Prayer, but we can assume Jesus put it in because he thought it was important. So our churches will be joining together right across the Diocese for this “Thy Kingdom Come” prayer call, as we seek to really root our faith in God and see Him at work in our communities. The old adage PUSH (pray until something happens) really does work! I commend it to you for your prayers. One other event this
