Peter Yealands Classic Fighters Album Loburn Abbey Fly-in 1 RecWings – May 2017 May 2017 May 2017 Oily Rags Brian Greenwood This is not, as you might expect, another safety-inspired message on the dangers of oily rags accumulating in the corner of the hangar (although it should be; these things can spontaneously combust) but more of a comment about personal finances. The title came from a farmer I once knew, who stated that ‘he didn’t actually have much money, he ran the place on the sniff of an oily rag’. I took it at face value, the helicopter, vintage aircraft, boats, and modern farm machinery might all have been financed to the eyeballs. Another friend retorted with “yes, but your oily rag contains a lot more oil than mine”. It was imitation envy for the sake of good humour. It got me to thinking about personal finances and flying, we’re all in a different place in life and each has a different story. Some of us have multiple aircraft, including some very expensive pieces of kit. Others are managing to do the job for not much money at all (comparatively speaking – it is aviation, after all!) by using club aircraft or more basic technology. Many of us are forgoing other luxuries such as overseas travel or even retirement savings (try not to do that), and not one of us are truly wealthy. Probably - remember there’s only one way of making anything aircraft related more expensive. Remove the word “Aviation” from the title Vale Mike Dimmock and replace it with “Wedding”. -

North Weald Airfield Museum Archives 1 Crashes and Mishaps 3 WEST ESSEX AVIATION CRASHES & MISHAPS WORLD WAR 2 North Weald Airfield Museum Archives 2 Crashes and Mishaps 3 WEST ESSEX AVIATION CRASHES & MISHAPS EXPANSION AND WAR 1939 - 1940 As the Royal Air Force and other military arms rapidly expanded in the late 1930s, the numbers of reported crashes rose rapidly. February 4, 1939. The prototype of the monoplane Bristol Bombay bomber-transport, the Bristol 130, K3583, forced landed at Chigwell according to those historical documents that bother to mention the incident at all. Such forced landings were not an unfamiliar occurrence up until the end of the 1939-45 war, the performance of the machines and the lay of the land still allowed for safe landings and take-off to be performed. The Bristol 130, constructors number 7809, first flew from the company airfield at Filton, Bristol on June 23, 1935. With a wing span of 96 feet it was the largest aircraft the com- pany had built to date, but not, by far the largest type then flying in the world. Its size did however preclude landings in some fields that might offer themselves in an emergency. On this occasion in early 1939 the 27 seat 130 was able to land safely in a field presently bordered by Forest Road, Roebuck Road and Fowler Road, Redbridge. The description given in the history books - of Chigwell - is incorrect by a matter of a few dozen yards. Having landed, without further damage, repaired the fault, and prepared to return to the air, it was sheer bad luck that followed. -

THE DE HAVlLLAND DH 98 MOSQUlTO What was it that was so special about this new aeroplane? Built as a private venture, the initial concept was of an unarmed bomber capable of out flying contemporary fighter aircraft (as de Havilland had in the First World War, with the DH 4 and 9). At first those in authority viewed it with great scepticism. Built with a wooden structure (which many considered totally inappropriate), it proved to be both light and fast, capable of carrying a two thousand pound payload, equal to that expected of a medium bomber, whilst still capable of outpacing any of the opposing fighter aircraft. Once again Geoffrey de Havilland succeeded in producing a bomber aircraft which could rely on its speed for defence. The Mosquito became probably the most versatile British aircraft of the Second World War. The Mosquito, known to most simply as the “Mossie”, had several other names that reflect different attributes of this aeroplane. “The Wooden Wonder”, which it most certainly was. “Termites Dream”, gained from when first used in the Far East and it was discovered that the glue used, a “casein” cement (a milk derivative), was susceptible to attack by insects and fungus. On the production lines this was replaced with a new type of synthetic resin adhesive that proved far superior. Another was “Freeman’s Folly”, after Air Marshal Sir Wilfred Freeman, who was responsible for development and production at the Air Ministry, had given his whole-heartedly support and backed the project against all the opposition. Another title given by those who knew of the involvement of the furniture industry was “Flying Furniture”. -

The Aircraft Flown by 24 Squadron
The Aircraft Flown by 24 Squadron 24 Squadron RAF is currently the Operational Training Squadron for the Lockheed C130J Hercules, based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Apart from a short period as a cadre in 1919, they have been continuously operating for the RFC & RAF since 1915. They started off as a Scout (Fighter) Squadron, developed into a ground attack unit, became a communications specialist with a subsidiary training role, and in 1940 became a transport squadron. I have discovered records of 100 different types being allocated or used by the Squadron, some were trial aircraft used for a few days and others served for several years, and in the case of the Lockheed Hercules decades! In addition many different marks of the same type were operated, these include; 5 Marks of the Avro 504 1 civil and 4 Military marks of the Douglas DC3/ Dakota All 7 marks of the Lockheed Hudson used by the RAF 4 marks of the Lockheed Hercules 5 marks of the Bristol F2B fighter 3 Marks of the Vickers Wellington XXIV Squadron has operated aircraft designed by 39 separate concerns, built in Britain, Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, and the USA. The largest numbers from one maker/ designer are the Airco and De Havilland DH series totalling 22 types or marks, followed by 12 types or marks from Lockheed, and 11 from Avro. One week after the publication of this magazine, there is a Sunday morning meeting on December 16th for ‘Pigs in Blankets and Mince Pies’ occasion, together with the ‘SANTA RUN’ in Wardown Park. So please will all members come along and join in the Club Festive Activities. There is a ‘Post Christmas’ sailing event planned for Friday 28th December. This is also being held down at Wardown Park Lake, commencing at 10am. It will be followed by a celebratory meal at the Moat House for 12 noon. Trust you will all be supporting these events and have been in contact with Pete Carmen to pay the required deposit for the meal. I do trust that you all have found time to do all you’re Christmas shopping and looking forward to going to the New Year’s sales with the family Ha! Ha!
