Cape Range National Park Management Plan No 65 2010 R N V E M E O N G T E O H F T W A E I S L T A E R R N A U S T CAPE RANGE NATIONAL PARK Management Plan 2010 Department of Environment and Conservation Conservation Commission of Western Australia VISION By 2020, the park and the Ningaloo Marine Park will be formally recognised amongst the world’s most valuable conservation and nature based tourism icons. The conservation values of the park will be in better condition than at present. This will have been achieved by reducing stress on ecosystems to promote their natural resilience, and facilitating sustainable visitor use. In particular, those values that are not found or are uncommon elsewhere will have been conserved, and their special conservation significance will be recognised by the local community and visitors. The park will continue to support a wide range of nature-based recreational activities with a focus on preserving the remote and natural character of the region. Visitors will continue to enjoy the park, either as day visitors from Exmouth or by camping in the park itself at one of the high quality camping areas. The local community will identify with the park and the adjacent Ningaloo Marine Park, and recognise that its values are of international significance. An increasing number of community members will support and want to be involved in its ongoing management. The Indigenous heritage of the park will be preserved by the ongoing involvement of the traditional custodians, who will have a critical and active role in jointly managing the cultural and conservation values of the park. -

We have incorporated, where possible, original observations of numerous taxa spread throughout the major tetrapod clades. A stem-based (total-group) definition of Tetrapoda is preferred over apomorphy- and node-based (crown-group) definitions. This definition is operational, since it is based on a formal character analysis. A PAUP* search using a recently implemented version of the parsimony ratchet method yields 64 shortest trees. Sumida Biology 342 Phylogeny of Basal Tetrapoda The group of bony fishes that gave rise to land-dwelling vertebrates and their descendants (Tetrapoda, or colloquially, “tetrapods”) was the lobe-finned fishes, or Sarcopterygii. Sarcoptrygii includes coelacanths (which retain one living form, Latimeria), lungfish, and crossopterygians. The transition from sarcopterygian fishes to stem tetrapods proceeded through a series of groups – not all of which are included here. There was no sharp and distinct transition, rather it was a continuum from very tetrapod-like fishes to very fish-like tetrapods. SARCOPTERYGII – THE LOBE-FINNED FISHES Includes •Actinista (including Coelacanths) •Dipnoi (lungfishes) •Crossopterygii Crossopterygians include “tetrapods” – 4- legged land-dwelling vertebrates. The Actinista date back to the Devonian. They have very well developed lobed-fins. There remains one livnig representative of the group, the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae. A lungfish The Crossopterygii include numerous representatives, the best known of which include Eusthenopteron (pictured here) and Panderichthyes. Panderichthyids were the most tetrapod-like of the sarcopterygian fishes. Panderichthyes – note the lack of dorsal fine, but retention of tail fin. Certain sites, like the beach at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park for instance, saw the landscape utterly transformed. Not only were buildings relocated, docks (or Iwhat was left of them) removed, and new dunes built, but later a pavilion was added, a Skateplex was constructed and most recently, the playground was renovated—see below. Old photos of the parks also demonstrate the opposite trend: some things haven’t changed much at all in the last 50 years. People visit the parks and recreate in much the same ways now as they did in the 1960s (there are just many more people recreating).This may be due to the enduring nature of classic outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, and canoeing. And, with the possible exceptions of new technologies (cell phones with GPS, bird identification “apps,” fish-finders, etc.) and improvements to equipment , these activities look pretty much the same today as they ever did. The Toledo Zoo/ThinkingWorks Teacher Overview for the Amphibian Lessons Ó2003 Teacher Overview: Amphibians Amphibians have many traits that are unique to this particular class of animals. Below is a list of general amphibian traits to help you and your students complete the ThinkingWorks lesson. The class Amphibia is divided into three groups or orders, each with their own set of features. The orders are frogs and toads, salamanders and caecilians. We have included a list of the different amphibians found at The Toledo Zoo by order and where you can find them on exhibit. Note that animals move constantly in and out of the Zoo. Please call the Zoo for a current list of amphibians that are on exhibit and their locations. Wild toad tadpoles and adults can also be observed on Zoo grounds in the formal garden area near the Conservatory. Look near the pool in the butterfly garden. General Amphibian Traits q The life cycle of an amphibian (the name means “two-lived”) begins as an egg. Tadpoles or larvae (singular is larva) hatch from the egg. Tadpoles are an immature stage. The tadpoles then mature into adults. This process is called metamorphosis. q Females deposit eggs in water where they are fertilized externally by males (see diagram). q Eggs hatch into tadpoles that are aquatic (live in water), breathe through gills instead of lungs, have a tail, no eyelids, ears and, initially, no legs.
