Cape Range National Park Management Plan No 65 2010 R N V E M E O N G T E O H F T W A E I S L T A E R R N A U S T CAPE RANGE NATIONAL PARK Management Plan 2010 Department of Environment and Conservation Conservation Commission of Western Australia VISION By 2020, the park and the Ningaloo Marine Park will be formally recognised amongst the world’s most valuable conservation and nature based tourism icons. The conservation values of the park will be in better condition than at present. This will have been achieved by reducing stress on ecosystems to promote their natural resilience, and facilitating sustainable visitor use. In particular, those values that are not found or are uncommon elsewhere will have been conserved, and their special conservation significance will be recognised by the local community and visitors. The park will continue to support a wide range of nature-based recreational activities with a focus on preserving the remote and natural character of the region. Visitors will continue to enjoy the park, either as day visitors from Exmouth or by camping in the park itself at one of the high quality camping areas. The local community will identify with the park and the adjacent Ningaloo Marine Park, and recognise that its values are of international significance. An increasing number of community members will support and want to be involved in its ongoing management. The Indigenous heritage of the park will be preserved by the ongoing involvement of the traditional custodians, who will have a critical and active role in jointly managing the cultural and conservation values of the park. -
A New Osteolepidid Fish From
Rea. West. Aust. MU8. 1985, 12(3): 361-377 ANew Osteolepidid Fish from the Upper Devonian Gogo Formation, Western Australia J.A. Long* Abstract A new osteolepidid crossopterygian, Gogonasus andrewsi gen. et sp. nov., is des cribed from a single fronto-ethmoidal shield and associated ethmosphenoid, from the Late Devonian (Frasnian) Gogo Formation, Western Australia. Gogonasus is is distinguished from other osteolepids by the shape and proportions of the fronto ethmoidal shield, absence of palatal fenestrae, well developed basipterygoid pro cesses and moderately broad parasphenoid. The family Osteolepididae is found to be paraphyletic, with Gogonasus being regarded as a plesiomorphic osteolepidid at a similar level of organisation to Thursius. Introduction Much has been published on the well-preserved Late Devonian fish fauna from the Gogo Formation, Western Australia, although to date all the papers describing fish have been on placoderms (Miles 1971; Miles and Dennis 1979; Dennis and Miles 1979-1983; Young 1984), palaeoniscoids (Gardiner 1973, 1984; Gardiner and Bartram 1977) or dipnoans (Miles 1977; Campbell and Barwick 1982a, 1982b, 1983, 1984a). This paper describes the only osteolepiform from the fauna (Gardiner and Miles 1975), a small snout with associated braincase, ANU 21885, housed in the Geology Department, Australian National University. The specimen, collected by the Australian National University on the 1967 Gogo Expedition, was prepared by Dr S.M. Andrews (Royal Scottish Museum) and later returned to the ANU. Onychodus is the only other crossopterygian in the fauna. In its proportions and palatal structure the new specimen provides some additional new points of the anatomy of osteolepiforms. Few Devonian crossopte rygians are known from Australia, and so the specimen is significant in having resemblances to typical Northern Hemisphere species. -

The Blayney – Demondrille Cross – country line Presented by Lawrance Ryan 1 From the Main West to the Main South The Railways of NSW Green - Operational Red - Closed Eugowra Blayney Grenfell Cowra Demondrille 2 Why build a cross-country line? • The Main Western Railway Line reached Blayney on 1st November 1876. • The Main Southern Railway Line reached Murrumburrah on 12th March 1877. • There was no link between the two lines west of the Blue Mountains. • As early as 1875, John Whitton, Engineer-in-Chief of the NSW Railways, suggested a cross-country line should be built to link the two main lines. •That line should pass as close as possible to the towns of Carcoar, Cowra, Grenfell and Young. 3 The Blayney - Demondrille Line • Built in three sections; • Demondrille to Young – Opened 26 March 1885. •Young to Cowra – Opened 2 November 1886. •Cowra to Blayney – Opened 13 February 1888 • The first cross-country line in NSW was complete. 4 Young to Cowra Opened 2nd November 1886 The stations en route •Burrangong •Maimuru •Monteagle •Bendick Murrell •Crowther •Koorawatha •Wattamondara •Noonbinna 5 Bridging the Lachlan • The Cowra railway bridge was the last of 12 similar wrought iron bridges built for the NSW Railways. It features lattice girder construction and was designed by John Whitton. •The Cowra bridge is the only one of the 12 not constructed in Britain. • The Cowra bridge was built by A. Locoq of Halle, Belgium using steel supplied by the Stockton Forge Company. 6 Bridging the Lachlan Work commenced in June 1886 and was completed on 15th June 1887. -

We have incorporated, where possible, original observations of numerous taxa spread throughout the major tetrapod clades. A stem-based (total-group) definition of Tetrapoda is preferred over apomorphy- and node-based (crown-group) definitions. This definition is operational, since it is based on a formal character analysis. A PAUP* search using a recently implemented version of the parsimony ratchet method yields 64 shortest trees. Differ- ences between these trees concern: (1) the internal relationships of aı¨stopods, the three selected species of which form a trichotomy; (2) the internal relationships of embolomeres, with Archeria -

Statement of Management Intent Eugowra Nature Reserve 1. Introduction This statement outlines the main values, issues, management directions and priorities of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) for managing Eugowra Nature Reserve. This statement, together with relevant NPWS policies, will guide the management of the reserve until a plan of management has been prepared in accordance with the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 (NPW Act). The NPWS Managing Parks Prior to Plan of Management Policy states that parks and reserves without a plan of management are to be managed in a manner consistent with the intent of the NPW Act and the ‘precautionary principle’ (see Principle 15). 2. Management principles Nature reserves are reserved under the NPW Act to protect and conserve areas containing outstanding, unique or representative ecosystems, species, communities or natural phenomena. Under the NPW Act (section 30J), nature reserves are managed to: • conserve biodiversity, maintain ecosystem functions, and protect geological and geomorphological features and natural phenomena • conserve places, objects, features and landscapes of cultural value • promote public appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of the reserve’s natural and cultural values • provide for appropriate research and monitoring. The primary purpose of nature reserves is to conserve nature. Nature reserves differ from national parks in that they do not have the provision of visitor use as a management purpose or principle. 3. Context Reservation details: Eugowra Nature Reserve was reserved on 8 September 1972. Size: 116 hectares. Eugowra Nature Reserve is located approximately five kilometres north-west of Eugowra town centre and 30 kilometres east of Forbes. It lies within the NSW South Western Slopes Bioregion.
