TOPIC 2: How do the Norwegian ports differ from each other? 24 TOPIC 3: Fact check about cruise tourists 31 Basic data, methodology and definitions of terms 46 © CYH / Visitnorway.com Brief overview of methodology and basic data The most comprehensive cruise survey The cruise survey' s basic data in Norway ever 14 ports The survey is based on interviews with 3 232 cruise tourists A total of 3 232 interviews were conducted with cruise passengers in 14 ports 80 cruise ships along the entire Norwegian coast – from Kristiansand in the south to North 175 cruise calls Cape in the north. Collection of the data took place from 21 May to 31 September 2019. The planning of the survey took into account many different 3 232 interviews factors: from the size of ships, number of calls and nationality of the cruise tourists, to the geographical location of the port, type of port and cruise line, and the assumed segment of the ship/cruise line. All of the interviews were conducted as a personal interview using tablets. Data collection took place over 75 interview days with 80 cruise ships on 175 cruise calls. The interviews were conducted with cruise passengers who were on their Ports Calls Interviews way back to the ships after a visit on shore. This 5000–6000-year-old land management practice was essential for local biodiversity and created a vegetation free from major wildland fires. In Norway, recent neglect has, however, caused accumulation of live and dead biomass. Invasion of juniper and Sitka spruce has resulted in limited biodiversity and increasing wildland fire fuels. At the Kringsjå cabin and sheep farm, Haugesund, an area of previous fire safe heathland has been restored through fire-agriculture. Kringsjå is located close to several important Viking Age sites and the Steinsfjellet viewpoint, a popular local tourist destination. The motivation for the present study is to analyse this facility and investigate possibilities for synergies between landscape management and tourism as a route to sustainable transitions. The present study compares restored heathland vegetation with unmanaged heathland at Kringsjå. The potential for activities is also analysed based on the proximity to the tourist attractions in the region. -

Ekaterina Klimova Master thesis in Tourism August 2015 UiT The Arctic University of Norway Abstract The decision-making process in purchasing a tourist product or destination is significantly influenced by the available information about it. One of the most popular information sources used by modern tourists in order to get a better idea about a particular destination is a travel blog, a new type of media aimed to help tourists to share their travel experiences with others. Thus, the information presented by travel bloggers plays a significant role in destination image formation and should be considered by destination marketers. The present master thesis is aimed to define the image of Norway as a tourist destination presented in Russian travel blogs. For analysis there are selected Russian bloggers who describe their post travel experience in Norway. With the use of content analysis the information found in the blogs is divided into five main themes. Each theme represents the most popular discussion topics by the bloggers. The analysis defines Russian tourists traveling to Norway as a minority group of Russian travelers. Although, at the same time the analyzed bloggers demonstrate several commonly mentioned characteristics of Russian tourists. There are made also interesting observations concerning the processes of tourism consumption and image formation based on the examples from the analyzed blogs. The study contributes -
General Information About Norway
General information about Norway Geography • Located at the western and northern part of the Scandinavian peninsula. • Norway has a long land border to the east with Sweden a shorter border with Finland and an even shorter with Russia. • The cost line is one of the longest and most rugged in the world with some 50,000 islands. • 32 % of the mainline is located above the tree line and is one of Europe’s mountainous countries. • Norway’s total area is 385,179 km2 of which 94,95% is land. • The highest point is Galdhopiggen 2,569 m. • There are over 150,000 lakes. • The longest river is Glomma 604 km and the largest lake is Mjosa 352 km2. • The Gulf Stream makes Norway having a milder climate than other countries at the same latitude. • Due to the varied topography and climate, Norway has a larger number of different habitats than almost any other European Country. • During the last ice age, Norway was virtually entirely covered with a thick ice sheet. As the ice moved, valleys were carved out and the famous Fjords were created when the ice melted and filled these valleys. Population • A population of 5,312,300 (August 2018) • The population density in 2017 was 14.5 people per sq.km. • Oslo, the capital inhabits 1,000,467 (2017) followed by Bergen 255,464, Stavanger and Trondheim. • The urban population was 81.9% in 2017, growing at an average annual rate of 0.56% • The five largest urban settlements inhabit 33% of the population. • Sámi people inhabit Sápmi which covers parts of Norway but also Sweden, Finland, and Russia. -

sustainability Article Development of Ecotourism in Svalbard as Part of Norway’s Arctic Policy Grzegorz Bonusiak Institute of Political Studies, University of Rzeszow, 35-328 Rzeszow, Poland; [email protected] Abstract: Global warming is increasing interest in the Arctic on surrounding countries. In the processes taking place, they see developmental opportunities and risks, especially for the environment overburdened by increased human activity. The need to balance socioeconomic development and environmental concerns affects their arctic strategies. An example of a place that undergoes an adaptation process is the Norwegian Svalbard. The article examines changes taking place in the archipelago using both: quantitative and qualitative analyses. Results show that Norway’s arctic strategy underlines the need to balance social, economic and environmental aspects, and the situation in Svalbard corresponds to these demands. Polar tourism and research and education play a key role in the transformation processes taking place in the archipelago. Climate and environmental considerations at the same time increase tourists’ interest in the region and limit tourist traffic. An analysis of its current state indicates that the dominant part of the existing tourist traffic on Svalbard can be considered as ecotourism.
